Why has MN changed colour?

It's awful! About 10 mins ago I refreshed a page and the blue banners changed to a much brighter shade, and the OP is highlighted in grey instead of green, and I hate it. It's too bright. What's happening??

Galaxy A55, latest version of Chrome.

Does it not properly drain your battery though? Surely you don't need loads of Mumsnet pages open.

Heebies here Grin

Do you know I’ve never really thought about it. Do open tabs drain your battery? I never knew that.

Maybe don’t ask me how many emails I have.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/09/2025 20:53

The blue is awful though.
my pic shows the difference. Lucky I had all those open tabs ..

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/09/2025 21:30

It’s like airmail letter blue

BIWI · 19/09/2025 23:42

That blue is awful. What was wrong with the darker blue? It looks pathetically apologetic.

borntobequiet · 20/09/2025 09:40

I thought I’d give it a few days to see if I could get used to it. I can’t. It’s horrible. Change it back please.

PinkStarss · 20/09/2025 15:45

Yes the new colours are horrible. Awful cheap, luminous baby blue and sickly salmon pink. For a nice contrast! Gah. Someone at MNHQ has too much time on their hands.

Yep. I'm not getting used to it at all, that shade of blue is vile. Way too bright, makes my eyes swim a bit when reading active convos.

No idea what the reason was or what they're aiming for but the result is that it looks dazzlingly cheap and tacky.

The previous shade of blue was...grown up? Subtle, didn't scream out of the page. This shade is just nasty.

This change is horrible, not accessible at all. Im actually struggling to read the site with the 50 shades of blue and that garish purple - it's clashing instead of contrasting, drawing my eyes away from what is important, the actual posts. The brightness is also hurting my eyes and I can't turn it down anymore or i wont be able to read other sites.

Also now i can no longer change the colour that both mine and the op's posts were highlighted in, I used pink and purple. Im dyslexic and that feature made the website much more accessible, being able to chose the colours instead of having to use external colour filter clipped to my monitor which falls off. Why are you removing useful features

I absolutely hate when websites that work perfectly well make unnecessary changes like this behind the guise of streamlining or simplifying the website because impo what it actually does is infantilise the users by implying like a child we don't have the capacity to deal with any features that could be considered complex. Mumsnet, im a middle aged parent I can do complex ok.

EDIT - Ugh the salmon of my own post is horrible.

EDIT 2 - Apparently i can change the highlight colours used on mine and op posts but now i can't find the setting to do so, im accessing the website using a windows pc.

Strawberry Angel Delight. That's what the "magenta" colour puts me in mind of. Or is shrimp flavoured Primula? Or that cagoule I had when I was six... or that first frosted pink lippie I bought when I was fifteen...or... 🤔

I don't know the what the fuss is all about - It's a free website. Talk about entitlement.

Ah, the age-old proverb explained again — where would civilisation be without you?

JaneJeffer · 20/09/2025 18:00

It would be fucked @SkipperTheEyeChild1 - it’s your round BTW

I respect your confidence but I very much doubt it.

... & you'll find 2 menus for those colour settings (they don't currently work in dark mode, & if you're in dark mode it says that in red). If you're in light mode you can use the menus to set 'OP' & 'my' post background colours. But the range of colours available is generally agreed to be pants. You're not able to go back to the colours we had before this change. So you may not find this as helpful as you hope. There's a MN-OP thread which stated they'll be changing the colours a bit - but people want the old colours back as an option.

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 18/09/2025 20:30

This is just downright obnoxious.

How many different tones of blue can you get on one page!

It’s not very easy on the eye at all. Not a calming view.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 23/09/2025 19:32

That is much better. Original colours back and slightly darker colours. Not back to original colour way but least it’s easier on the eye now.

IwantToRetire · 23/09/2025 21:21

The official thread has closed, so jumping in here!

Just because I want to say again:

The problem blue is the one being used for the background to buttons and the banner at the head of the web pages. And labels.

In fact its brightness undermines the contrast with the white lettering.

It needs to be a duller blue (not paler) so the white lettering stands out NOT the blue surround.

As someone who is impacted by light, this lack of change continues to make MN hard to use.

But as someone up thread suggested maybe that is a good thing.

Less time on MN.

Is that what you want.

FightingInAVatOfJellyBabies · 23/09/2025 23:16

I came to write what @IwantToRetire has written, word for word that is what I wanted to say.

I also want to retire.

Well at this rate I will be retiring from MN!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/09/2025 09:00

And there's still a lot of extra pink around - the AIBU voting button, the blobs next to unreadable posts in notifications. (What are the latter for? Unread is already indicated by text colour and shading, the blobs are just clutter.)

Why does it have to be pink? I liked having a women's place that resisted that nonsense.

@LizzyMumsnetwhere has the grey option gone?
