Constant intrusive videos

These are driving me mad. I understand you need to sell advertising space, but on every thread there is a highly intrusive video. Even when I close them down they reappear on the same thread! Surely once a user has closed the ad that should be it?

I miss the days when Mumsnet was the go-to interviewee for women’s voice. Surely the owners got more satisfaction from that (and more than a living salary) than this advertising hell?

Makehaysunshine · 25/08/2025 16:33

Please please recommend me a free ad blocker . I’ve just tried to look up a recipe. Can’t even see it because of the ads.

LadyTottingham · 25/08/2025 16:57

The pages are slow to load and/or keep reloading, it's almost unusable (I'm assuming this because of the size of the adverts?)

Since we have been prevented from using adblockers I make a point of
never clicking on any advert that comes up and I just ignore, however, there have been so many intrusive adverts over the last few days that I'm getting rid completely by using the 'hide distracting items' button on my iPhone/ipad.

Really feels like the site is going backwards.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 25/08/2025 17:13

Yes even typing is slow. Latest iOS on iPhone and iPad.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/08/2025 17:16

Sorry if I’m being stupid, but I installed DuckDuckGo and there are no ads at all. It’s crap for browsing as the results are useless but it’s good for MN and online news

has anyone else used it ?

The site runs so much faster. I used to think my phone/ iPad was slowing down, but it's just the site. Even typing is quicker.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 25/08/2025 18:41

My son also suggested trying Firefox. Don't hand whether that would work, but it's another option.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 25/08/2025 19:19

It's strange that it's different on different devices. I use both iPad and Android. Ipad has always been sedum with the ads and needed an ad blocker. On android, it didn't use to be so bad, but then it got awful and slow, so now that needs an ad blocker. I love every minute of using one. Happy to be a freeloader!

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/08/2025 19:56

@LoveMyLifeAlways yes, Firefox Focus is the ad-free one (there is also standard Firefox) so maybe try that one. Nothing to lose really

GiveMeWordGames · 25/08/2025 22:59

Using duckduckgo now on my PC. Bliss. Bye bye, moronic ads.

Is it free?

LoveMyLifeAlways · 25/08/2025 23:05

Yes

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/08/2025 23:05

Yes completely free

Yes.

And the stupid thing from a MN/advertiser perspective is I wouldn't have bothered until this, and the non invasive ads would still be showing to me. But they've overreached and the whole lot of them can piss off in that case.

I got rid of the annoying adverts by subscribing!!

Its a good site. I use it a lot. They need to pay their staff etc. Its worth it.

They need to pay their staff.

Have you seen the Mumsnet accounts?

Onetimeusername1 · 26/08/2025 00:03

Yep, annoying as shit and especially bad in dark mode as they are often bright white flashing into your eyes.

You can’t use ad blockers on MN. If you have an iPhone use the “hide distracting items” option. It’s a pain you have to do it on every page, but I just leave it open on the page I’m on so I get rid of ads as they appear.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 26/08/2025 06:39

I giving DuckDuckGo a whirl. Currently no ads which is nice, they were so distracting. I was happy with the ads - the site needs to generate income. But that was too much so fingers crossed this works.

clotheslinefiasco · 26/08/2025 07:05

Ads are still there for me today (on PC) so incredibly annoying,

Think I'll try duckduck go

Stupid rubbish Mumsnet - you really don't need 3 different ads on each page - and when you make subscriptions compulsory, that's me gone

LadyTottingham · 26/08/2025 07:20

Update from my post yesterday, I have now reinstalled duckduck go to my iPhone/ipad and will use this solely for MN because the adverts are too much. Will continue with my other browser for everything else.

SparklyGlitterballs · 26/08/2025 08:46

I tried using MN on Duck Duck Go, but found that even when I bookmarked a thread, it wouldn't take me back to the bookmark when I went back to it, so I returned to Safari.

Im on an iPad, and although the pop up video is small and in the corner, I find it really intrusive and distracting, on top of the already huge side banner ads. I'm guessing MN doesn't care though because they haven't responded once on this thread yet and it was started days ago.

How do I do that please?

BookShark · 26/08/2025 08:54

Android phone here, and it gets to the point that at times it's impossible to scroll without clicking on an advert as the whole screen is taken up with ads. Surely one ad at a time is enough?!

I'm getting the same now too, an extremely annoying Fisher Price video ad in the corner. Every time I close it, it comes back again after about 3 seconds

skyeisthelimit · 26/08/2025 09:41

These videos are popping up in the bottom right corner, (on desktop on Chrome).

They are very annoying, I click on them immediately to make them go away. They are not advertising anything when we don't look at them.

They keep coming back despite clicking on the x, they also pop in and out as well.

MN, please stop these adverts.
