Constant intrusive videos

These are driving me mad. I understand you need to sell advertising space, but on every thread there is a highly intrusive video. Even when I close them down they reappear on the same thread! Surely once a user has closed the ad that should be it?

@MNHQ why aren't you replying to the numerous tags on this thread, and reports of posts as mentioned in the thread? And most importantly, why can't you stop the pop up videos?

I've started to use MN less due to these videos. Such a distraction whilst you're trying to read something.

The relatively recent ad change on the website has been a disaster from a user experience perspective. I get MN need to make money from advertising so I'm not complaining about them having ads per se, but on the desktop site you've got the pop up videos and things taking up whole pages, then on the mobile site there was the pop up videos in the middle of threads with a tiny 'x', and the constant reloading, and then the page hanging and making it impossible to access any other website either. Surely there are ways to have adverts that aren't as painful as this?

This. Maybe they will take notice if they notice a drop in the amount of users on here. There is no need for those ads to appear so often, at all.

Absolutely sick of these video ads. Please please turn them off. It's a constant stream of crap, fills up an already small page on a mobile phone screen and is extremely intrusive.

The videos are never ending, even with a count down so you can skip an ad - and therefore interact with it.

This is NOT OK.

@MNHQ isn't a real handle, so the tags mean nothing.

The new video popups are using way too much real estate on smartphones, about 30% on mine (not a problem on a tablet though, there it's only stamp-sized). Also, I will have to reduce/stop mobile use of MN, because I can't burn my expensive mobile data on constantly visible/loading video adverts (not in the UK).

I guess because more than enough people will continue to use it. Same goes for the Reach "newspaper" sites mentioned earlier. To us, they're unusable to plenty of people think otherwise. It's the only explanation that makes financial sense.

I reported a couple of weeks back that MN is currently crashing one of my laptops.. to the point i have to force restart.. it pushed it through a disk check the other day and did something where i thought it had broken my machine.

The only difference between the two is one machine is a workhorse for Office/Writing, and the other is a Gaming machine... it isn't crashing my gaming machine with the better processers and graphics capabilities... it IS still making it lag/slow loading, and this thing is a top of the range Gaming Machine.. so fuck knows what it's doing to anyone elses computers that aren't that spec.

I don't know wtf MN are playing at, but they're continued refusal to address it is shocking.

These new ads also seem to be making my laptop run hotter than usual. Safari on a MacBook. This then drains the battery quicker. Have had similar issues when using the app on iPhone over the last couple of months, although it now seems to have been resolved on the phone.

Has anyone found a way to stop these on Chrome on a laptop? Driving me nuts.

All the people who can actually do something are off for the weekend and bank holiday Monday.

I clearly remember when we had someone posting images of child abuse on here there was one poor night mod trying to deal with the whole thing with almost no powers.

I'm using mn less and less too, it's not an enjoyable experience. There's the video ads, other ads, the page constantly reloading, bookmarks not working, the "back to top of page" arrow not working first time, generally slow to load etc. Also my phone gets hot while using mn (although tbf it is fairly old).

Mine is a box and two lines - I have the latest iPhone and updates.

I click on that to get the remove distracting items option. As I have already explained in response to someone asking.

It’s not as bad on safari on the iPad as it’s just in the top right corner, but it’s dreadful on the iPhone.

I keep finding that posts don't post, then suddenly there's duplicates, too.

The Felix one makes scrolling impossible. MN don't care. As long as they get their money 🤷
