These are driving me mad. I understand you need to sell advertising space, but on every thread there is a highly intrusive video. Even when I close them down they reappear on the same thread! Surely once a user has closed the ad that should be it?

Is something going to be done about these annoying adverts???????????????????????????????????????

Morning, everyone. We're still working on this. In the meantime, just a quick recap of things that might help and other things that will help us find fixes.

  • Always press 'X' rather than 'skip' if there is an option. That should help prevent the ad popping up again.
  • For the new 'pop-up' video ads: Each one should include an ‘X’ button. If you click the ‘X’, you should not see that type of ad again during your session. (If you do please let us know with a screenshot if possible). If any of these ads appear without an ‘X’, please share screenshots so we can investigate. If you are seeing the same ad repeatedly after clicking the ‘X’, video recordings would be very helpful, too.
  • For all other ads (ie not the pop-up video style), please send screenshots if you can, which will help us troubleshoot.

Many thanks for your help and patience with this.

Hello Hebe, on the iPad (in Safari) there is no option to click X on the pop up video ads so they come back a few seconds later. This one is for the Gates Foundation.

I’m spending more and more time on Reddit. It’s just a matter of finding the subreddits of interest. It was harder to navigate at first, but now I’m getting the hang of it, I'm not really missing things here as much as I thought I would.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/09/2025 21:12

As a person with a visual impairment, unwanted videos are more than just annoying. They are virtual steps to trip over.

HebeMumsnet · 22/09/2025 19:58

Can we just check - it looks like some of you who are coming across ads that can't be closed are in iPad. We'd like to know if that's always the case. If you're finding ads that don't have a 'x' in the corner to close them can you tell us what device you're using please?

Laptop using Chrome. Made it usuable.

Yes - for me it’s in the iPad (using safari) that there is no X to close the ad, only the option to skip.

It’s fine on my iPhone.

CherryogDog · 23/09/2025 09:39

All the time I've been reading this thread the Premier Inn ad has been running at the top.
It has no option to skip or close.
And even the ads that do have the x, what's the point, it just gets replaced by another annoying flickering advert.
Like a previous poster, I have vestibular migraines, and the ads trigger my dizziness.
Please @MNHQ listen to what we are saying, without your users you'd have no one to sell advertising to.
Maybe I'm thick but I don't understand why you have no control over who advertises on here, because some of the ads are inappropriate.

Mine is my laptop using chrome.
There is an x but nothing happens...the ad is super annoying as it's right over the trending list and pops up repeatedly.
On my phone it is in the top corner so not as intrusive and the x works to get rid of it.
Ideally you can stop those ones..I'm not bothered about the others as they can be largely ignored but the pop up ad right over a main bit of the screen is badly thought out and simply a real pain in the arse

Chemenger · 23/09/2025 10:08

No x on my iPad. This ad appears to have a countdown but it sits at 4 for a few seconds then disappears (“skip” appears for an instant before the ad disappears) then a couple of seconds later it reappears and repeats. To add insult to injury there is a large ad for the same thing on the page anyway. No ads have x on them on the iPad (doesn’t anyone at Mumsnet have an iPad they can look at for this. How do you test things on different devices.)

Fantastic point! Why not check what it would look like across various devices?

UseOfWeapons · 23/09/2025 11:32

none of these ads appear on my iPad, but are driving me potty on my desktop! using Edge...

There is no x on any of my devices. Hence why when they appear I just close mumsnet. Much easier.

GoodMorningMissBliss · 17/10/2025 06:16

Anyone else getting these new and improved giant pop-up video ads? These just started today for me and won’t click away, only make the page jump about when I try. Sigh.

SidewaysOtter · 17/10/2025 16:31

I'm not getting giant ads but I am just getting pop up ads OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again, even if I've clicked 'x' (which I still can't do at all on my iPad so I've stopped using MN on there).

Why can't you just turn them off, MN? The website is full of bloody ads already.

justasoul · 18/10/2025 16:51

I'm getting the video adverts on the corner of the page going full screen - as in, opening a whole new page like when you click on full screen on youtube? It keeps doing it even after you click the x to close it. Not on every page but happened a handful of times. Once was NatWest, the others was a badger? But didn't watch enough to find out what it was advertising.
On a computer, MacOS Tahoe 26.0.1, using Safari.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 18/10/2025 21:00

I am on an iPhone and these ads are really bothersome.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 18/10/2025 23:47

They are intrusive. I think because they appear instantly thus spoiling my enjoyment of the site. On a small iPhone screen it takes up too much space.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 19/10/2025 02:50

Now there is a full size Coop advert. It flicks onto to screen full size. This is awful Mumsnet.

spoonbillstretford · 19/10/2025 03:09

I even find it hard to type on here at times - earlier the message box was jumping around as I was typing and I clicked on several ads I was trying to avoid.

justasoul · 19/10/2025 09:37

Yep re Coop. On my phone earlier, you click skip on top, roll the page and up it pops again Confused

LadyMars · 20/10/2025 08:00

Having a half page advert cropping up all the time, so big I can’t see what it’s advertising and no option to get rid of it. (Still on an iPhone, still using chrome, still unwilling to delete cookies because I’ve done that so many times).

MN I think I have a high threshold of tolerance as MN over the years has been such a lifeline, and I’m reluctant to leave, but you’re taking the piss with these constant intrusive ads and apparently doing nothing about them.

It’s also bloody depressing to have a massive funeral ad showing up every 5 minutes.

ayepecking · 20/10/2025 08:19

I've been inundated with Glamira ads (cheap jewellery site) for weeks. I don't even like jewellery and if I did, it wouldn't be cheap stuff.

GoodMorningMissBliss · 25/10/2025 07:13

I don’t think MNHQ give a hoot about what we think of the constant ads. Even those who have stated how they affect them physically have been ignored.

I’m back to getting the giant ads today after a week of just the annoying drop down ads covering the top of my screen. I assume they think we’ll all eventually buy premium to be able to read ad-free, but I’m never going to pay for a subscription so the options are pit up or leave, I guess. And they know this.
