Concerns about racism

Hi there Mumsnet HQ

Many of us are concerned about the uptick of hatred, xenophobia and racism on the site over the past couple of weeks. Most of the bigotry is focused on asylum seekers. MNHQ will of course delete racism etc. if reported, but this has gone way beyond a few hateful posts.

I'm not assuming they're British because of the comment from the PP, not because they might be Muslim or brown. Stop trying to make out we are all stupid.

This is a thread to try and discuss what can be done about racism on MN, it's not yet another "but but immigrants!" one. So why try and make it one? Surely there's other threads for that you could join.

Why don't you believe that racism and inflammatory rhetoric should be censored?

What a load of rubbish. It was set up by one person concerned about racism and dis or misinformation standing on MN and unsurprisingly a lot of people agree with them.

Why is that a surprise? Can people not disagree on one thing and agree on another? I find that a lot less shocking than you clearly do.

Do you really genuinely believe that if we only allowed in women and children from these high risk countries the likes of Tommy Robinson and the Reform Party would be fine about it? That these women would experience no racial abuse? Let alone these women existing outside of their family support networks it seems fanciful that the only issue that people have against immigrants is gender.

These exact same sexual predator tropes existed about black men right up until the 90s .

Racism isnt a 'counter view'. Its racism. That's what the thread is about.

But unfortunately they are the prime reason for twisting situations to suit their agenda and thus inciting hatred.
The extreme right/far right have been doing this for decades it's nothing new just that they're able to reach a wider audience.

I really don’t get why anyone would come on this thread and be ‘god it’s so unfair that you people are talking about how racism is bad’. I think we can agree that there are disagreements about what constitutes racism, but even so, this thread is no threat to even hardcore racists so… what’s the point

There’s saying ‘cancel’ this discussion and then there’s ways of making it happen without having to say it.

Nobody has said 'cancel this discussion'. They've asked how MN is set up to moderate racist posts and whether it could be improved.

‘Desperately overcrowded’ is very dramatic language for ‘less populous than the Netherlands’.
