There's just so much of it. If you want to keep the over 60's over here, could we address these hateful posts in a timely manner. One in particular has been reported a while ago. Still there.

Yes, I agree. I reported a recent ageist and sexist one and the response I got from Mumsnet was appalling.

Apparently it's OK to use damaging negative stereotypes if they are based on reality. When that reality is a function of the sexist ageist culture that exists.

Ageism and sexism are also OK if Mumsnet feel that there is no mal-intent.

Both of these Mumsnet attitudes are deeply outdated and do not feature in modern EDI thinking. Racism is never acceptable even if its based on a stereotype, or if its not meant with mal-intent. Neither should ageism or sexism. I'll be leaving too.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 15:25

I'm about 10 mins away from flouncing out because of it tbh. I know MN won't rise and fall on my input, but still...

FruitBowlCrazy · 17/01/2024 15:30

Yes, I'm pretty sick of it as well.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 15:33

Thread still there, despite saying they'd 'look' quite some time ago. I think I need to take a chill pill.

RebelMoon · 17/01/2024 15:35

Which thread are you referring to?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 15:38

I I link to it, it'll be deleted as a TAAT. Oh the irony. I can pm you tho?

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 15:41

@RebelMoon ^^

RebelMoon · 17/01/2024 15:42

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants sure, thanks.

fioreun · 17/01/2024 15:42

Mumsnet also downplayed the ageism - calling it 'referencing' age. Again unacceptable. I'm cross about this! I think I'll go and shovel some snow!

skippy67 · 17/01/2024 15:45

Could someone please PM me a link to the thread?

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 15:47

can you link to the one still there?

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 15:48

me too please op

It’s the generalisations about entire generations that piss me off. And the idea that life is so very vewy hard and it’s all the fault of old people. All of them.

Yes, I’m old. And grey. And experienced.
And I see being old as a personal triumph, having a trail of dead friends and acquaintances left behind me (not by my hand). I don’t see it as a negative.
Ageism is a constant theme on MN. It’s tedious and predictable.

RebelMoon · 17/01/2024 15:55

I'm sick of it as well. Fed up of "boomer" being used as an insult, as if that generation is responsible for all the world's ills.

LakeTiticaca · 17/01/2024 15:56

Much of the spite of the younger generation seems to be levelled at the Boomer generation, especially those who have inherited.
They seem to think that the parents of the boomer generation had it easy.
They actually didn't, but instead of all.the entitled whinging we here so much of nowadays, they just got on with it.

SquirrelSoShiny · 17/01/2024 15:58

I'm really interested to know which thread you are talking about. I have seen really interesting, thoughtful, provocative threads deleted because of accusations of ageism / racism / sexism etc. I've also seen some outrageous threads / posts stand. So really without linking it's impossible to comment.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 15:58

I think I've pm'd those that wanted me to. If you haven't had one, pse shout, as pm's seem to be glitchy.

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 16:00

@SquirrelSoShiny it won't let me pm you. Can someone forward link for me please?

Anyone who wants to know what thread it is:

Just advanced search the word ageism and today's date and it will be pretty obvious.

TheDogsMother · 17/01/2024 16:03

I hate all the boomer shit and the sweeping generalisation about how good we've all had. I wouldn't dream of making a sweeping generalisation about a generation. Unlike all the other isms it seems to be tolerated on here.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 17/01/2024 16:05

Can you pm me please
I'm pretty horrified by some of the attitudes on here. Do they think they will never be older themselves?
The thread that sticks with me was the poster concerned with her mother's controlling neighbour. The neighbour had taken her mother's car and the amount of posters who thought it was acceptable because he may think she is no longer fit to drive🙄

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 16:08

Yes, tis unbelievable. Over an hour after reporting and response, and it's still there, not even edited.

Exactly

A Year off of turning 60 here and lost too many at the young ages of 17, early 20s and early 30s (some of those over 40 years ago)
As DM always says

Ageing is a Privilege Denied too Many

One Day these whom bring up ages will be old themselves..
All too soon really.

RebelMoon · 17/01/2024 16:10

There was some dreadful ageism on the thread about intergenerational house sharing last night as well. One poster said people over 50 were more likely to not pay their rent and would probably get ill 🙄

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/01/2024 16:11

@RebelMoon omg. Wonder what peer reviewed research that was linked to!
