There's just so much of it. If you want to keep the over 60's over here, could we address these hateful posts in a timely manner. One in particular has been reported a while ago. Still there.

I find it odd that ageism isn’t age specific but weirdly some think ageism is a thing that only happens to older generations. I’ve seen lots of generalisations about younger generations. Also sometimes there seems to be a disconnect between what’s actually said. eg saying certain generations had better house price vs salaries is interpreted as that is was easy. Or some seem to struggle with statistical evidence because it’s not reflective of them.

indeed. See my examples of the hypocrisy of the Op upthread!

Are we having a Reddit raid? Grin

Is it getting a bit bitchy now?

this is illogical! Someone pointed out hypocrisy is not bitchy!

exactly

The OP is not coming across well in her response to me merely pointing out that she has been an ageist previously on mumsnet . “Bitchy” 🙄

MonsteraMama · 17/01/2024 16:39

Rules for thee and not for me I see 🙄

shearwater2 · 17/01/2024 16:39

MN is much kinder if you hide AIBU, Chat and Feminism.A lot fewer random drive by idiots.

All i have done upthread is identify where the OP has been patently ageist herself on other threads 🤷‍♀️

bessytedsy · 17/01/2024 16:40

This thread is hilarious!

brace yourself!

bessytedsy · 17/01/2024 16:41

Rules for thee and not for me I see

Apparently so but don’t you dare point that out! 😆

shearwater2 · 17/01/2024 16:42

There is so much ageism and lazy stereotyping about kids, teenagers, mums, parenting all over MN and on social media generally unfortunately, it doesn't only go one way.

Cattiwampus · 17/01/2024 16:46

Think some of you have mistaken "site stuff" for flouncer's corner.

No, I’m not going anywhere, Sweetie. I may be old, but I’m not confused.

LovePoppy · 17/01/2024 16:47

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 16:28

so that is your response when i simply point out that you have been patently ageist in other threads

Didn’t you know? You can only be ageist towards older generations.

Its totally acceptable to make unflattering generalizations about younger generations.

🙄🙄🙄

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2024 16:49

Where does ageism end? Should I be re educated for calling my son a 'typical 13 year old'? And my DP a boring old fart? He is a boring old fart. I'm a boring menopausal fart with the legally required midi dress and white trainers. My granny dressed like a granny, and my grandpa smoked a pipe. Isn't this just life stages?

SquirrelSoShiny · 17/01/2024 16:50

See I don't actually think that thread needs deleted but then it's consistent with the upbringing I had and the views of my older relatives. DH's family were completely different. So the people who are appalled, I get it - it doesn't reflect your upbringing and experience.

For those of us who DID have that kind of upbringing, it IS predominantly our older relatives who come out with this stuff. It was normal child raising in council estates in my town at that era and our parents are now 65+.

To me it's just a discussion that will either provoke horror or recognition. I find the horror quite moving, I wish more people back then were horrified.

bessytedsy · 17/01/2024 16:51

@SquirrelSoShiny thats a good point, should it not be discussed because it makes others uncomfortable?

OP you have not addressed why you previously felt justified in using age-related generalisations.

Or are you admitting that there was no justification and you were wrong to do so?

AyeRightYeAre · 17/01/2024 16:53

I'm fed up with the replies from @MNHQ which state:

We'd prefer if these sort of posts were challenged as part of the thread itself rather than deleted - Mumsnet is a discussion site first and foremost. So we'll let the thread continue but please do report any further concerns as we are always very happy to take a look.

There is no other group who are expected to tolerate hate speech and prejudice.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/01/2024 16:53

@RebelMoon that thread really pissed me off and the inference that the OP must be a bit odd if looking for a lodger/house share situation post 60 after divorce as a short term solution- whereas it sounded perfectly practical to me- maybe I'm odd too!!

SoupDragon · 17/01/2024 16:53

I agree that ageism works both ways. You can't dismiss the entire younger generation as being "snowflakes" and then complain when someone makes sweeping generalisations about over 60s.

ive just looked at the thread I assume this is about and I don't actually think it's ageist. It's certainly making sweeping generalisations but that's not unusual on many threads about various age groups/classes/sexes/religions.

I think I've pm'd those that wanted me to. If you haven't had one, pse shout, as pm's seem to be glitchy.

SwimmingWorrier · 17/01/2024 16:55

Why is Advanced Search there if it's not to be used?

saraclara · 17/01/2024 16:57

Dammit. What could have been a useful thread now has no value since it turns out that you're equally ageist @SpongeBobJudgeyPants .

As I said on one of the potentially ageist threads, generalisations about any demographic are dangerous. Whether it's about boomers (me) or millennials (my kids), men or women, etc etc.

Best not to throw stones from your glass house.

orangegato · 17/01/2024 17:03

This is golden. Lumping the younger generation together as having certain views, calling them snowflakes, then getting all defensive and personal. Chip is on your own shoulder love!
