Rampant ageism.

This thread reflects a diverse range of opinions, and, much like in real life, achieving a consensus on what is acceptable may prove impossible. We feel it's important, therefore, to emphasise that Mumsnet is a discussion site, which thrives on hosting a broad spectrum of perspectives. Encountering views that sharply differ from your own or that you may find offensive is inevitable. Do remember you always have the option to either hide the thread or directly address it on the boards (we all have our unique and valuable insights after all). You can also report it to us if you think a post breaks our guidelines.

Our approach has always been to evaluate each report on its merits but in general we have a high bar for deletion when it comes to widely accepted and used language - for example, snowflakes, old biddies, etc. Lately, we've observed a trend where any post mentioning age or generational differences is reported with demands for removal - were we to adopt this approach we’d be deleting an awful lot of conversation... We’re also concerned that posters are being scared off by pile-ons about perceived ageism when they’re sorely in need of Mumsnetters’ advice and support. Perhaps the language they used was a little clumsy but we think it’s possible to gently point that out whilst not ignoring the substance of the post.

Moderating a site as big as Mumsnet is a challenging task and it is impossible to make decisions that keep everyone happy. We politely ask that you work with us to keep the Talk boards interesting and informative - all of us have benefited from the wisdom and kindness of MNers at some point - and accept that a sledgehammer approach to moderating this (or any issue) just doesn’t work.
