Hi,

The Nicola Bulley thread must have been hidden overnight by nightwatch. I wasn't on it at the time to see what happened.
Are we allowed the post back or are we not allowed to discuss it now?

It is unfair to people who are following the case and are genuinely concerned.

Why do you need 100 threads on a missing person just because you’re concerned. Maybe follow the news and keep up to date with everything? Why does there even need to be constant discussions?

I hope MN don’t bring the thread back. It’s very distasteful

Shewasnthere · 11/02/2023 15:19

@Bluebellwood129 I agree with you.

I think it's safe to say that other than the poster that suggested aliens and seemingly to police, most people including the family now suspect a third party. So I hope in the coming weeks for whole family that leads are found and answers are given. Must be hell not known.

Going Back to the program, did you find it odd when Dan asked Paul 'will you be ok'? I found that to be a very strange thing to ask him. I asked this question last night but then the thread went. Or is it just me that found it weird.

Amazed at the people who followed 7 threads whilst being horrified at them all.

Thank you for ably demonstrating my point. It is entirely possible to dip in and out of threads and see the nastiness and vitriol. It doesn't require people to to be "amazed" that someone actually looks at threads. We have as much right to comment as everyone else, but the tone of those threads was often "if you don't like what is being posted then f* off and don't read them". Which is the implication behind this comment, isn't it? At one point there was a poster - who is also commenting on this thread - telling people that they are "thick" repeatedly because they disagreed with that persons pet theory on the disappearance. Speculation, baseless rumour, and outright lies and fiction characterised many posts; with a hefty dose of personal attacks thrown in. Much of what was being posted was the internet version of the ghoulish behaviours of those turning up at the site to insert themselves into a tragedy, and it really wasn't pleasant. Wrapping it up as "concern" for her or for the family doesn't make the tragedy public property.

JaneJeffer · 11/02/2023 15:21

Yeah it was totally weird. How is he supposed to answer that?

GoAgainstNicki · 11/02/2023 15:21

I much prefer talking about it on here, rather than on twitter/Facebook/Reddit with all the nut jobs.

Lol there’s loads of nut jobs on here. The usual have already made it to this thread

JaneJeffer · 11/02/2023 15:23

You're totally exaggerating @Quveas and the threads are there for anyone to see that for themselves.

Daisymaker · 11/02/2023 15:28

@GoAgainstNicki

Do people really still use language such as " nut job" ?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 11/02/2023 15:30

Hi @ofwarren the thread you refer to was auto-hidden due to the number of reports about it. When we reviewed it this morning, we decided to take it down. This is because a lot of posts were making direct accusations about members of Nicola's family. We have not stopped MNers discussing the investigation nor speculating (as that's all that can be done right now) but we must ask posters not to make such claims. On another thread, we asked posters not to do this but it continued, and so we removed it too.

Why you asking me? The OP used it in one of her posts and I just repeated it. I’m guessing people clearly do use the phrase as the OP and I have both typed itConfused

What does this mean for threads going forwards?
Are we allowed to have them?
It's a problem if all posters have to do to get rid of a thread they don't like, is to derail it.

These threads are just shite for gossips, people getting their rocks off at others misery, whatever excuses you can muster are pathetic, shame on you all.

Yep!

Bluebellwood129 · 11/02/2023 15:37

@Shewasnthere Was Dan just trying to illustrate the emotional burden on Paul? I'm sure Paul would have been consulted about all of the content and the questions asked.
For me, the programme highlighted so many more opportunities for third party involvement than I'd previously considered possible.

beccahamlet · 11/02/2023 15:45

I haven't read all the posts on this topic, but has anyone heard about Nicola's water/swimming skills?

Thinking about my friends and family I would have a fair idea about who would have a good chance of getting out and who would be more likely to come to grief.

Alliwantistobe · 11/02/2023 15:46

@beccahamlet she is a very strong swimmer

beccahamlet · 11/02/2023 15:48

I think that's massively relevant.

Shewasnthere · 11/02/2023 16:00

@Bluebellwood129 hmm, I see what you're saying. Just felt like a bit of an odd question. Because as a general assumption - someone missing someone close to them likely won't be ok. And every one else would already know that/assume that.

But yes I agree with you, it definitely did.

I think Dan didn't know how to end the conversation so just blurted it out awkwardly - I bet he's cringing about it today.

Shewasnthere · 11/02/2023 16:35

@lemmein maybe, but it wasn't a live interview, and if like another poster said, that they would have gone through the questions, they would have a clear end to the interview, "will you be ok?" And the awkwardness on both sides that followed just didnt make sense to me as an end, in a case like this. Dan looked visibly uncomfortable as he said it. I could be over thinking that particular part though.

BeigeCar · 11/02/2023 17:21

@ofwarren are you planning to give a new News thread a go?

Someone else has opened another one with the same title. It's in News

You're totally exaggerating @Quveas and the threads are there for anyone to see that for themselves.

I think you are failing to appreciate that not everyone agrees with you. Perhaps we have different tolerances about what we consider toxic or nasty, but it is certainly not an exaggeration. I am not a liar, and this is what I have felt about the threads. So have others. If you don't think the same that is your right - but I am also entitled to my view. Calling people thick, making definitive allegations against others including the family and anyone associated with the situation without any evidence and claiming those opinions as facts... I am not going to continue this debate any further, but the fact that some people view such toxic behaviour as acceptable is perhaps saying more about what MN has become than about the case in question.

ImprobablePuffin · 11/02/2023 18:00

It pisses me off when people automatically assume anyone reading the threads is there for 'entertainment and enjoyment' as has been mentioned countless times.

I've followed all seven threads and commented too. At no point was I sat there thinking 'ooh what fun this is'. It's just a baffling and upsetting case involving a woman so many of us can identify with and relate to.

And let's not forget, the family said themselves they want people talking about it to keep it in the forefront of peoples minds. What they don't want is wild speculation involving specific individuals that would be hurtful to the family.

I also notice all of the people on the thread saying how vile we all are for talking about it are also there, reading, commenting and yet are far superior to everyone else, obviously.

Thank you @ofwarren for the threads and hopefully we will be able to continue discussions in a civilised fashion as is our right.

I haven't done any of those things and anyone who did had their post deleted.

Mumsnet said We have not stopped MNers discussing the investigation nor speculating (as that's all that can be done right now) so I'm sure they are going to remove anything which contravenes their guidelines.

Thatcatisdrivingmenuts · 11/02/2023 18:30

I'm not keen on threads like this. Most people are sensible, but speculation of this sort encourages the types who were making a nuisance of themselves on site. If nothing else, it contributes. That'll my only comment.
