please removed whatever script you have decided to put in place on AIBU, Chat and Brexit topics. It's choking typing to be 1/10th speed and making it nigh on impossible to type with any speed.

I'd guess it's part of a "bright idea" connected with similar threads. But it's shit and sub optimal.

Maybe get some grown up testers ? Because the kids missed this one.

Hi @SerendipityJane

I'm sorry that there appears to be some issues on those particular topics for you.

In order for me to take a look at this, could you please let me know which device you're using? If you're using the website, could you also please let me know which browser you're using, and if you're using the app can you please let me know the version number of the app.

Thanks

SerendipityJane · 21/12/2022 13:14

Thanks @SerendipityJane

What device are you using? Could you also let me know how much memory is installed in the computer please?

You can find out how much memory is installed by following the steps here: www.avast.com/c-how-to-check-ram-memory

Thanks

I've seen other posts with a weird font

Abzs · 21/12/2022 13:21

It's not just SerendipityJane. AIBU is slow for me too.
Desktop site on chrome in android 10.

Abzs · 21/12/2022 13:24

Actually, perhaps slow isn't the word. It stops mid scroll and won't scroll further.

SerendipityJane · 21/12/2022 13:24

Currently running with 16G, but it did it on a 32G machine too.

I know shit script when I see it.

Thanks, @Newwardrobe

The poster of that post has used a backtick instead of an apostrophe.

Surrounding words with backticks will make the font look monospaced like this.

That's an intended method of formatting things in posts which is useful in some topics.

No scripts have been added to the site for a while, so if you've suddenly started seeing this then it is something else.

I noticed your per page settings are currently set to show All posts at once. Could you please try changing that to 25 posts per page and let me know if that resolves the issue for you?

Thanks

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 21/12/2022 13:34

Same for me the last couple of days. Sometimes typing moves at glacial speed. Not an issue on any other sites.

Lenovo laptop and Edge browser.

It's not a memory issue - my laptop is almost brand new.

SerendipityJane · 24/12/2022 10:18

Also, now when you leave MN open in a browser for any length of time, it crashes the tab, and you have to close it and reload - just reloading isn't enough. Didn't used to do this.

Just a little tip - you need to be very careful when you start blaming users for your bad design. It's not a great look. Like website "designers" who tell me that I can't use assistive software, as it breaks their site. No, my Equality Act dodging friends. Your site is breaking my software.

At an educated guess, and with the hint uptrhead, there is now something scanning the page as you type - the more page, the more scanning and hence the performance degradation.

I could open an inspection tool and send you a network trace to see which requests and responses are happening in the process. But since your testing must have included that - in probably more depth than I could be bothered to setup - you should use yours.

Awww, what the hell. It's Christmas :)

I'm having the same issue, also on chrome. I thought it was my tablet playing up but maybe not.

WomanhoodIsABirthright · 24/12/2022 10:23

I'm getting a delay drag when typing on my laptop, on chrome.

Fucking annoying.

FOJN · 24/12/2022 13:57

The site is almost unusable. Although I do appear to be able to type at a normal speed on this thread. I'm having many of the same problems as everyone else. Some are new and some have persisted since the site was "upgraded".

Slow typing.

Pages taking so long to load it's quicker to shut a tab down and open a new one.
Wrong threads opening which I thought was just me but it seemed to be happening more than usual for fat fingers and now I see someone else is having the same problem.
Pages don't scroll or do so with the banner from the bottom scrolling up the screen too.
Cut and paste is painful, you can highlight text and then you may or may not get the option to cut, if you do it takes ages for the option to appear on screen.

I'm using a Lenovo tablet with 64GB, 32% used, chrome and android 11. I clear browsing history and cookies regularly but it makes no difference.

The thread title sums up my frustration.

WTAFnojustno · 24/12/2022 14:01

Yeah the typing lag also here, as well as a deleting lag which is extremely annoying!

And yes to the pages crashing. If I have an MN page open and then leave it for anything over about 5 mins, I have to close then reopen the tab as it's frozen completely.

Both started with the update, but I gave up on reporting issues as every time we all get the brush off - "oh it's your browser/device/talk settings" - no it's not, you fucked the site!

FOJN · 24/12/2022 14:25

no it's not, you fucked the site!

Sadly I have to agree. I gave up reporting the problems but came here today to see if I was alone. I see I'm not and suspect there are many more who can't be bothered to report.

FiveShelties · 25/12/2022 21:26

Yes, Chrome on Tablet is just the same. It has been like this for a while now.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 25/12/2022 21:44

I thought I had a problem with my phone, exactly the same is happening to me, mobile site,Android phone, firefox

The having to open a new tab everytine is really annoying

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 26/12/2022 08:22

I am having these issues too, typing a reply is sometimes impossible. If I persist, the whole thing freezes at the 'Post' stage. Also need to close my browser and start a new web session every single time

I'm not going to let anyone blame my device because every other website works fine on it. And I don't want to have to go back to flicking back and forth between pages on long threads.

There's something very fundamentally wrong with this site.

midgetastic · 26/12/2022 08:46

When you write web code there can be features of specific devices or browsers that can cause odd things to happen

When you write web code you can't test against every browser / device combination
If you don't say what

midgetastic · 26/12/2022 08:48

If you don't say what combo you have it can't be investigated and fixed

Just because it's not happening on other sites - that is either luck // the fact that the other sites are doing something slightly differently

Once the bug is discovered it's usually posted up somewhere so other web sites can find it when needed

I do some coding

Lessoftheold · 26/12/2022 08:52

I'm glad I'm not alone with these issues. I'm using the mobile site on android and have awful problems with slow typing, even slower deleting and having to close and reload the site frequently. These issues are only on MN and very frustrating.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2022 08:58

I was having a lot of these issues until I capitulated and switched over from 'See all posts' to using pages. I don't like pages but I have to admit the site is now usable for me again in more or less the way it was before the 'upgrade'. I strongly suspect that 'See all posts' mode was not considered in the move to the new platform. It was a setting that was removed many years ago but as a concession people who already had it were allowed to keep it. I imagine the vast majority of users were therefore stuck with pages on the old site. During the user testing phase of the new platform I was a tester and mentioned 'See all pages'. I had the impression it came as a surprise to the MN staff I was talking to that this was still a setting many of us were using.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2022 09:02

FWIW, it was on very long threads that the lag and tabs closing kicked in for me. Given a lot of my posts and browsing are on The Archers threads which always go to nearly 1000 posts it was very frustrating in the last few days of each thread, hence why in the end I moved over to page view.
