New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

The search facility is not working. It only allows a search with the latest date as 6.4.22 and once I have set the filters, there is not button to start the start. Android phone using samsung internet. Ta.

Clicking on photos (iPhone, safari, website)

i click on a screen shot, it opens up but it’s very tiny and appears as two different images when there is only one screenshot. I try to zoom in but image just flickered / slides around. No obvious way to close it, I had to back page.

Quotes aren't working properly on the iOS app either and you can see loads of posts from other threads? It's like they're all jumbled together.

Did anyone actually test this properly before rolling it out? There are so, so many glitches it's laughable.

From Active, click on a thread to read, click back and the Active page has been refreshed and your on a random part of the page. Is the refresh a conscious change?

On a phone there is so much wasted space between posts with the bookmark then grey line. Why?

It is horrible to read and requires more scrolling.

Apart from op's post, why is everyone else in red? I can't distinguish my post from all the others now.

I'm in the iOS app and it's h o r r i b l e. Nothing at all is working properly. Can't bookmark; all non-OP posts in red; posting in threads doesn't add them to 'Watching'; some posts seem to have been decapitated and start from halfway through so there is no apparent OP...

Yes the app is awful.

Very little works correctly. Bookmarking, colour settings, opening threads, watching list and even browsing is hit and miss with loading the previous thread you were on and not the one you clicked on. Terrible.

I don't mine change but want features to work and the app appears pretty broken.

Change is fine but nothing actually appears to work properly at the moment.

Another one who doesn't like having to see the op on every single page. Thought I'd clicked page 1 again.
As pp said the previous option of show op worked just fine and was useful but this really is more irritating particularly if it's long.
Also not keen on posts having today's date rather than today as it makes it look old.

Issues I'm (iOS) having on the Talk app:

Active threads section not updating when refreshed
All PPs are red, as well as me
Bookmarks not holding
OPs missing
Threads not changing colour when read
I think (although can't confirm) that some deleted comments have reappeared (reported one from 2021 to test)
Posts hidden behind ads

I'm sorry for saying negative things about the new look (as I probably for all the changes over the last 15 years!) but the layout on a desktop doesn't work very well.
There are massive blocks of grey space either side of the text box - I'm guessing for adverts, but the text box is far too small. There seems to be a lot of white space within the post, meaning it is harder to read and takes longer to scroll. It also seems to be giving me a headache. I think with the last change I was able to change the font etc using font changer, but it would be good to know if it is just me?

You've taken away the shortcuts at the bottom of the page again. Please put them back especially AIBU.

Also if I click on an image the cross to exit must be hidden behind the advert so I can't exit properly without pressing back and losing my place

Sorry I've just spotted the arrow at the side of the posts on "I'm on" which takes you to that post on the thread.
So that's no longer a gripe!

I’ll definitely need a colour change to show threads I have already clicked on. Turns out I have no memory for thread titles…

….and now I find that all the emojis in the world are suddenly available but looking very blurry as though viewed through water - ugh, no way. I absolutely hate them all. Clutter horror. Please go back to offering the very limited mumsnet only emojis. This is the slippery slope to having individual poster signatures with every post (like you get on other forums) with quotes and gifs and date of first joining and shit. Shudder.

I couldn’t find the MN emojis anywhere and just write [ hmm ] to get it.

MN - please stay distinctive. Quick simple and clean. Focus on the text. Otherwise if you’re like every other chat site, what’s the point?

I'm quite dissapointed the mobile site has not been set up so you can zoom in and the text wraps to the screen size, surely this is basic accessibility in 2022? I know you said the text size hasn't changed but as someone who could only just read without zooming before something you have changed (font, spacing?) has made it harder to read.

The app is an absolute mess. OPs from one thread appearing in the next thread you click in. OPs missing completely when you click in a thread. Html appearing in posts.

This. The gaps are so annoying when you want to read and skim quickly.

I have the cookie consent page popping up every time I go onto a new page, very irritating.
Also the op is at the top of every page in the thread- fine if it’s a short post, not fine if it’s an essay.
