New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

I can use the arrow on threads I'm on, although that's only good if there's not been 20 new posts and I have to scroll back up.

What I mean is - in 'notifications', it will tell you, e.g. 20 people have commented on... and the thread name. It used to be I would click that, and it would take me to the first of those 20 new comments. Now I click it, and (if it works at all) it takes me to the first post in the thread.

I was going to screenshot so you can see what I mean, but now when I click on 'notifications' I just get the black pop up of doom.

we'll make sure to test it with those who've said they're having difficulty with the new site.

The iOS version of the app is not working basically.

What's your response to:

• Active Threads showing mostly Zombie threads
• No bold for names that are tagged (@ function)
• Gobbledegook text as emojis don't appear to be recognised
• Quoting not working, only part of the post appearing & it's embedded at the end of the original quote
• Bookmarking not working.

It's more or less unusable.

I'm having to use the app coz the website makes me headachy and feel sick. Is that a purposeful change to drive people to the app for some reason?

Well, seeing as the app is basically not working at all, let's hope not!

It does like they've just dumped a mobile view on the desktop.

It's worse than that @MinkyTunes and @HarmonicAnalysis I'm on Android and it's rubbish, line spacing far too big and lucky if I can read a single post without scrolling (don't get me started on long quoted posts that waste huge amounts of space).

@JustineMumsnet this isn't just being non plussed by something different, it's making engaging with content very cumbersome. Why are quoted posts double line spaced and given more prominence than normal posts (they should have less rather than more)? Given we are the content MN sells it's not a great idea to make it less appealing for us to engage with and contribute content.

I'm on the app and it's mostly ok

It's not tho - most functions key to the app, aren't working at all.

Another poster said to log out & back in (again). Did this, active threads updated a bit (to several weeks ago, more than several years ago), but otherwise - all the same issues.

Everything that EarringsandLipstick says - the app is dreadful. Nothing is behaving as it should.

not rtft but can I add my voice and ask for next and previous links to be added back to page numbers. Fat fingers (or even a stylus) and a link under ONE character is rage inducing and really shouldn't be happening on a decent website. Makes it VERY user unfriendly 😡

Someone on another thread mentioned how some of the visual stress some of us are experiencing might be linked to astigmatism and dyslexia.

Posts like this with heavy bold plus the grey 'highlighting' makes all the text fuzzy. It is hard to read without strain. It all needs toning down a notch.

@JustineMumsnet I'm kind of getting used to it but there are two annoying things.

Firstly as others have said click on an image and it's a long white box with a tiny image in the middle.

Secondly in Active, it automatically refreshes so when I leave one thread expecting the one below it to still be there, it has disappeared. I haven't noticed it in the other, aibu etc.

Just popped in to ask if topics like Property have been actually removed or is it just that I cant see them?

I have an iPhone and on that the App is exactly as it always was. They fixed the colour issue and now it is back to normal.

I have to say I have got used to the new desktop site and I I quite like it now.

If you get an error 500 when clicking threads in it, check in your hidden topics settings. Topics that I regularly view and had not hidden were unfindable for me after the update, kept getting 500 error, cleared cookies etc still didn't help but checked settings and they were hidden, I don't know why and i definetly didn't do it.

Fed up of being directed to log in when I go to threads I'm on. Don't like it

@ApolloandDaphne - is bookmarking working for you on the app. I agree that the colour issue has now been resolved but it's a real pain that bookmarking is still not working for me.

I also deliberately did this post as a quote to see how it looks, as I've not tried that yet.

There are also lots of symbols that are coming up funny - like & coming up as (iirc) &etc (that's the only one I've worked out) .

Active on the app and active on the website are different.

Website works fine on my phone. I don't use the app.

But the desktop site on my laptop... just awful. SO much empty space.

MNHQ PLEASE sort out the issue with images, there's damn all point in posting an image when it remains miniscule and blurry with a huge expanse of white around it when you click on it, this did NOT happen before on the old version and if this is how it is going to be in the new improved version then words fail me.

Next, Previous and Last please and the ability to put in a page number of your choice was far easier and better than the current set up plus the Refresh Thread option.

Yes, totally agree. I'm on my desktop because on my mobile, I have to accept cookies EVERYTIME I lcikc on another page or another thread, but now only about a third of the screen has text - the rest is glaring light gray.

And when I click on an image, it comes up in a box that's actually smaller than the image in the post! Useless, obviously optimised only for mobile devices with no consideration of how it will look on a monitor.

Ridiculous and headache inducing with all the white space.

I really think this whole thing needs rolling back and reworking until a LOT more testing has gone on.

The list of issues (which I cannot believe are deliberate changes, just stuff that's not working properly) is insane!!!
