New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

I'm on the app and it's mostly ok. Some of my favourite topics have gone completely though - menopause is totally gone even when I search for it.

Lots of very random threads in active as well.

Am sure it will settle down soon.

ImAvingOops · 21/04/2022 07:52

Personally I'd like to get rid of the quote function and have posters copy and paste like they did in the olden days. I'm fed up of reading a post and then having to read it again (and again and again) when several posters decide to quote it.
If people are reading the thread properly then they know what's been said already and don't need to see it on repeat!

beastlyslumber · 21/04/2022 07:55

I mean, it just doesn't work! Yesterday, notifications took you to the start of a thread (which is pointless). Today I can't get any notifications because "request entity is too large" apparently. Also can't 'mark all as read' because that's too much for it, too.

Not to mention the 'trending' topics which seem to be stuck.

I can totally accept a few teething problems but this seems a total mess.

I think I've solved the riddle of the 5 blank lines at the top. From looking at the page source I think it's a space where yet another ad is meant to be. I don't see the gap if I log in using Opera and turn ad blocking on.

On my laptop the first five lines are Mumsnet promoted threads, the bug is that they don't show up on the mobile site (android for me)

AchillesPoirot · 21/04/2022 08:18

Is there any update @JustineMumsnet ?

This is terrible from an accessibility point of view and a functionality point of view.

On mobile the site makes me feel sick and gives me a headache. On the iOS app it's a mess. Threads don't show up
And quotes don't work. You can't book mark.

Fulmine · 21/04/2022 08:33

The lack of auto capital letters is driving me mad. And the autocorrect doesn't seem to work all of the time, like the site is overriding it (it didn't auto-capitalise I on another thread I was on, for instance). That appears to be intermittent though, oddly.

I didn't know MN ever did have auto capitalisation, and I've been on for years. Extraordinary.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 21/04/2022 08:35

After logging out then logging in to the app again this morning all is right with the world. (Disclaimer: I don't actually use any of the fiddly bits/extras so can't comment on them)

It did when you started a new paragraph, yes! Now it's lower case.

Why are bloody bookmarks only working intermittently?! Angry

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/04/2022 08:39

Quotes on the iOS app still aren't working and if you try and bold something, then tag a user, all the text you've bolded goes back to normal.

Oh and none of the bold, italic etc. buttons work either Hmm

workwoes123 · 20/04/2022 23:29

Hope you are still checking in this thread…

iPhone, safari, web version
overlapping posts

and still no Auto caps at the start of a new line

This is also a problem on the desktop version. It is most noticeable where a post has formatting within it but its not only on formatted posts.

So apparently "new improved" can't cope with basic formatting of text correctly.

Tags are also still not being picked up by access software so I assume no fixes have gone in in that area.

butterflymum · 21/04/2022 08:45

@hopeishere re Menopause threads, still available at www.mumsnet.com/talk/menopause

AchillesPoirot · 21/04/2022 08:47

I still can't get into my PMs either. I just get that twee message about making a cuppa.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/04/2022 08:47

Why do I have to log in every time now, even though I have clicked the keep me logged in box?

Agree the massive quotes are now distracting.

Sooverthemill · 21/04/2022 08:49

I agree it's crap. Trying to type a message and this pops up. Hate it.

AchillesPoirot · 21/04/2022 08:50

I'm having to use the app coz the website makes me headachy and feel sick. Is that a purposeful change to drive people to the app for some reason?

AchillesPoirot · 21/04/2022 08:59

Also. Threads I've read on the app - if I refresh they're going bold again as if I haven't read them.

MinkyTunes · 21/04/2022 09:06

It does still seem much more difficult to use than the previous platform, and I'm not really sure why. Active doesn't seem to be easy to read or update as much. II find it difficult to navigate around, although I guess this will improve with time.

Using desktop chrome there are only a few posts to the page, which is really tiring on the eyes to scroll through. I uploaded an image and it doesn't enlarge on clicking on it.
Using it on the phone (android) it seems a bit better - it is obviously aimed at the mobile market. But the spacing is still too big, and the colour contrast is still an issue. The bold blue writing on active I also find difficult to read. There also seems to be thinner blue writing which also is difficult to read as well.

VestofAbsurdity · 21/04/2022 09:07

What's up with the images posted by posters? You click on the image and the image remains miniscule and blurry surrounded by a wall of white?

HipHopBanzai · 21/04/2022 09:09

Is anybody else finding that Active Threads doesn't update anymore? I tend to browse the site via Active Threads but it's so out of date. According to my app, the last thread that was posted on was an hour ago and most haven't updated since last night.

VestofAbsurdity · 21/04/2022 09:09

Oh and click on the B to bold something within a post and can't turn it off when done.

credit due for giving a mostly functional new site.

Except it's not! Certainly the app is barely working.

I haven't been using the website but all I can see are complaints about not seeing PMs, having to continuously log in & problems with font & display.

I fail to see what's 'mostly functional' about any of it.

I manage projects that use large complex platforms. Something like this would be a complete failure. Yes, there's always unexpected behaviour and loss of functionality but I've never seem anything as bad.

When things are problematic, we go back to the previous version while we sort it. We don't leave the shambles in place.

I agree re the testers, definitely.

It isn't just testers, its the whole release management process.

Lord knows I wouldn't expect anything so useful as a release note to be published in good time to warn users, with details of changes to expect.

But since the UI seems to be such a shambles of broken or removed functionality then basic comms around what is accepted as a defect, what is positioned as a "feature" and timelines around remediation would be common sense.

Since there are so many issues and more appearing it would be common practice to keep that list public at least for the big ticket items (such as the numerous accessibility issues but also key functions).

At the moment as a user I'm not seeing any benefits beyond more emoticons - the best praise being reported here is "it isn't too broken" which is pretty pathetic for something launched as the first major upgrade in 22 years.

Its poor user management as well as poor testing, release and seemingly build management.

ImAvingOops · 21/04/2022 09:14

I just went on a thread in S&B, wondered why the links didn't work and it turned out to have been from 2014

AchillesPoirot · 21/04/2022 09:17

@HipHopBanzai that's exactly what it's like for me too.

Don't want to quote you coz quotes don't show up in the app 🙄

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 21/04/2022 09:18

one issue I have noticed is that you can't click straight to the last post in a thread from threads I'm on like you used to be able to. It automatically takes you to the bookmarked thread. Can we have that back please?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 21/04/2022 09:19

Sorry the bookmarked post
