New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Endless scrolling. No refresh button. How can I refresh a page

I've always refreshed by using the refresh button on my computer, I didn't know there was any other option. So it's still there.

FusionChefGeoff · 20/04/2022 22:27

I only ever really use the talk app - and it's definitely not working properly post launch. Very old threads in Active, active not changing - something has broken!

crabbyoldbat · 20/04/2022 23:06

Is there a special reason lines in quotes are double spaced, and taking up so much room? If not, could it be sorted please?

Also, it would really be good to put all the post actions back onto the top line, with the username and date, to make the flow better. Thank you

workwoes123 · 20/04/2022 23:29

Hope you are still checking in this thread…

iPhone, safari, web version
overlapping posts

and still no Auto caps at the start of a new line

I'm on android and I actually quite like it. It's not perfect but it looks OK for me and I really like that you don't need to press 'back' multiple times anymore to come out of a thread when you've opened a picture. Also that Threads I'm Watching can now be ordered by date it was last updated so I can see if an OP comes back to update an older thread.

Me too! I moaned a LOT about the numerous bugs on the old site and the update seems to be much more responsive. I haven't noticed any freezing when trying to scroll (which was constant before), ads aren't glitching any more, and we can finally nest quotes which is a nice little feature. Although yes, it's definitely all too white and imo the line spacing is too big.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 21/04/2022 00:40

What's going on with all the zombie threads? Someone has resurrected one from 2009 which must be some kind of record!

MadameFantabulosa · 21/04/2022 06:00

It keeps logging me out, if I am inactive for a while.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/04/2022 06:16

In case anyone at MNHQ is still taking notice, most of the topics (Chat, AIBU etc) are missing if I'm logged in, I can only see Site Stuff and the Special Needs section, but everything is there when I'm logged out. So I can read but not post.

If I type AIBU into the search box, there's a link to the board that I can follow, but then if I click on a thread I get the 'apologies, our server seems to be having a moment' message.

All my TIO and watched threads have vanished.

But it seems strange how different people seem to be having different issues

Then I tried to add a confused face emoji and it brought a black box over the screen that could be escaped away but kept coming back until I deleted the confused emoji <confused emoji>

skippymcskippy · 21/04/2022 06:23

The smiley emojis are super-pixelated and creepy on the iPhone app

If I am logged in the only threads I can read are threads I am on. All others come up with error 500 and saying "We are having issues with our server".

Using chrome on an old Samsung tablet. And I have checked that my chrome is updated.

Moochio · 21/04/2022 06:51

I keep getting logged out.
I am fed up of scrolling to try and see other people's posts so I've given up and will just reply to the OP.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/04/2022 06:51

Bookmarks aren't working in this thread. I bookmark, leave, come back, then have to scroll from the top. They're working on other threads I'm on.

My sister apparently can't use the site at all, as it's telling her she had to log in, when she is logged in.

It's really hard to tell when you've pressed the symbol to get bold etc. It goes a colour which is barely discernible from the 'not-pressed' colour.

The lack of auto capital letters is driving me mad. And the autocorrect doesn't seem to work all of the time, like the site is overriding it (it didn't auto-capitalise I on another thread I was on, for instance). That appears to be intermittent though, oddly.

Moochio · 21/04/2022 06:52

I don't know why the OP's post appears at the top of each page. It's really annoying, just adds to the scrolling.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/04/2022 06:53

Also, is @MNHQ actually reading this? Or don't they care? You'd think they'd want the accessibility sorted ASAP, if nothing else.

PlantBasedPluto · 21/04/2022 06:57

Pretty sure that doing @MNHQ is pointless - I don't think it goes to an actual account.

However, and I bet this does get fixed quick, adverts aren't working and I am not using an ad blocker - just getting a grey square with small text saying advert. Quite nice really.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/04/2022 07:11

The adverts for me are much less intrusive than before. I'm too lazy to mess about with ad blockers, but there's a couple right at the top of the page that stay there when I scroll down, so aren't visible most of the time.

But I'm confused about the value of internet adverts. I've never clicked on one on MN or anywhere else really, and I'm not sure why anyone ever would. If you're here to read the posts you don't even look at them or ignore them if they're in your face and even if you did click, most of them are total rubbish so you just close down quickly.

The number of people who see an internet advert and actually click through and spend money, must be more or less non existent.

You might not but lots of people do! Enough to make them worth paying for, at any rate.

Baystard · 21/04/2022 07:15

Pah, it gets worse, I just spent ten minutes replying on a thread where OP had asked for meal plan ideas, nearly ready to post and then a big black "access denied" box appeared and I couldn't add or remove any text. Total waste of my time and won't be typing it all out again.

I can't believe they launched with so many problems. Surely the accessibility issues should have been noticed prior to the new site launching? Confused

Hercisback · 21/04/2022 07:18

The quote line spacing needs sorting too. Why is it double spaced in the grey box?

tribpot · 21/04/2022 07:24

tribpot · 20/04/2022 14:33

Same issue as @ArrrMeHearties about an alleged new PM (private message, not prime minister alas).

Also WTF is this - when I open a topic, or active threads, there are 5 blank lines at the top.

I'd echo the concerns about accessibility and the quote-in-quote-in-quote functionality, that does not look at all compatible with the rules. Your accessibility statement should indicate who did your accessibility testing for you and when it will next be repeated.

I think I've solved the riddle of the 5 blank lines at the top. From looking at the page source I think it's a space where yet another ad is meant to be. I don't see the gap if I log in using Opera and turn ad blocking on.

Dutchoma · 21/04/2022 07:28

Goodbye Mumsnet. I cannot find any on my watched threads and am totally fed up of you chopping and changinging and pushing Mumsnet Premium.

RockyRoadster · 21/04/2022 07:33

I keep getting logged out too, on both my iPad and iPhone. It’s so frustrating having to keep logging back in.

ChessieFL · 21/04/2022 07:34

Another issue I have just spotted is that if you want to start a post with a number (as part of a list), it changes the number to 1. I’m on the 50 books thread and most posts there start with whatever number book that person has just read so having it default back to number 1 is very irritating.
