New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

Would you mind taking a screenshot Achilles (it's not a universal problem so would be good to see)

I just tried to take a screenshot to show you the font on my Samsung S10 but the file would not upload, just went black and I have had to close down Mumsnet and come back.

crabbyoldbat · 20/04/2022 09:07

Also, I agree with a poster above - still on Threads I'm Watching - three posts show regardless of the number that are new (this used to be more, but not all) plus it went down to one if you'd read them all), there is no indication of how many new posts there are.
Thanks

Another desktop problem. One consequence of the weird narrow format is that date range on advanced search is near impossible to use.

I challenge you to set a data range of the last 24 hours in those badly designed sliders in such a narrow line. Putting in actual dates (as we used to) is a damned sight easier - in fact its hard to see what advantage was focus grouped on those ugly little slider boxes.

Also advanced search isn't working - even within just today's posts it brings back incomplete and incorrect info. Advanced search has never been great but it was generally usable within the last 24 hours.

When you are in 'Threads I'm On,' on a laptop, you can only click and go to a post by clicking the small arrow to the right hand side. That's a bit of a pain. Can you make it so if you click anywhere on the username or on one of the recent posts, it takes you to the thread?

I would want it to take you to that particular post if possible, not the start of the thread.
I think I can get used to clicking the little arrow tbh.

Yes that is really annoying. Not sure if its another defect or a "feature" but taking me to the top of the thread so I then do a second search for the post seems counter intuitive.

I did work with MN to show them how I used TIW/ bump and reset, and got the impression I was in the minority, but it's honestly how I use MN nearly all the time. If there were no new posts since I'd last watched or bump/reset, it'd only show the thread title so I knew there was nothing new there.

Please could we add some sort of equivalent function to maybe collapse read watched threads in TIW to just show the title with no posts previewed?

If you click the little arrow to the right of the previewed post, i think it takes you to that post.

I can't even find Advanced Search!!

PossumSholom · 20/04/2022 09:15

I have issues with the text (MS diagnosis but not usually affecting my eyes) it's blurring and swimming - on desktop.

Also I got a huge Black Screen with the mumsnet logo and an Opps pop up when typing this.

SpinningMeSoftly · 20/04/2022 09:16

JustineMumsnet · 20/04/2022 08:40

Agreed - we're on this

Thank you - that'll be good.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/04/2022 09:16

Ooh, now this is interesting. Looking to search for something to try out what @C8H10N4O2 is talking about, the only search function I could find was the search box right at the top, but if I type in chat or AIBU, I can then see links to the boards that don't appear in the main index.

I can also click on those links to go to what looks like the chat or AIBU sections and see that people are posting now. But if I click on any of the threads, I only get the 'Apologies, our server seems to be having a moment' page.

prettybird · 20/04/2022 09:18

@girlmom21 - try logging out of the iPhone app and logging back in. That's what I had to do. Although there are still glitches (like no bookmarking) at least you can see "Threads I'm on" and "Threads I'm watching" - although a thread you've posted on won't automatically go onto "Threads I'm watching"

I've had that huge black screen and MN logo too, twice in the past hour or so.

It disappeared when I clicked the edge of the screen that was just visible behind it, but I'm on a laptop and I'm not sure that'd be possible on a phone.

HellyR · 20/04/2022 09:19

I can't work out Threads Im Watching at all. One thread says 210 new posts. I've gone in and read till the last post but TIW still shows the last 3 posts as previews and says '210'. So there is no indication or way for me to reset to show myself I've read the most recent thread.
Am I supposed to remember what the last post I've read on each thread is? can we at least reset the '210' number to 0? I may start a dedicated thread about this. ..

HellyR · 20/04/2022 09:21

One positive comment - I like that we can now go straight to the subboard from Threads Im Watching.

NobdieTheNob · 20/04/2022 09:26

Noooo!!! I've just been wondering WTF is going on, and Googling "how do I change the look of Mumsnet" has taken me to this thread.

How could you do this? @MNHQ

I want Mumsnet to look the way it has always looked. I don't understand it now.

The "quote" thing has disappeared, too.

NobdieTheNob · 20/04/2022 09:28

Before I flounce: I get the black screen, too.

BertieBotts · 20/04/2022 09:28

Definitely needs a dark mode switch.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 20/04/2022 09:30

I haven't read the thread to see if this was pointed out before, but on desktop (Chrome) the header is absolutely massive and there are weird blank rows on talk pages. Screenshots attached.

I am finding that this is hurting my eyes, I am almost having to squint to read anything. Some of the fonts are tiny. Also photos are tiny. They open as a little picture in the centre of a big white box. Screenshots that people have uploaded are unreadable.

I don't like that the posts are all squashed over to one side of the screen. I'm on my laptop on chrome, but it does look better on my phone.

I have also had a load of error messages while trying to type this.

Glamora · 20/04/2022 09:36

when I click on the link from my email, this is where it takes me (and has done for weeks now)

AND CTRL + ENTER doesnt post any more!!

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but my email inbox is rapidly filling up with notifications that someone has added to a thread I’m watching/on. How do I turn this off? Fingers crossed me posting this doesn’t elicit an avalanche of more notification emails 😭

RedToothBrush · 20/04/2022 09:40

Im having problems with the at symbol.

If i put type something which references something from twitter it throws a hissy fit and starts trying to put it in all over the place at the end of my typing where I didn't want it and then I also cant delete it. Then when i try to move add something after its deleting words. So i can't actually type a twitter address without it causing problem. It just tries to at on the forum with the alert if that makes sense.

Its utterly frustrating because I can't actually reference stuff properly which is important if you are trying to source things and prevent inaccurate / untrusted sourcing.

Example of when I'm trying to do it. I don't want to automatically add a box at the end and the alert is deleting the end of the post. (tweet from mumsnets twitter feed the morning)

If I then try to post Im getting error messages saying some of the mentioned usernames do not exist.

Its not a username though. I know this. I am not trying to put in a user name.

It effectively stops you being able to reference twitter. Maybe this is deliberate but I think there is an unintended consequence to this which means you are more likely to encourage fake news rather than encourage good practice.

Ive included a screenshot of what its doing as best I can.

This is what I mean about the photos. why isn't the picture this size of the white box?

Go to Settings, they have all been reset to MN Default.
