New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

A few observations, laptop with firefox

• weird font on the sticky threads on active


• hate the date of the last post rather than today/yesterday


• the boxes for the posts are too big, you have to scroll down every other post


• there are no MN emojis


• names of @ posters are in huge blue blocks, looks awful


• no option for going to the top or bottom of the thread, I don't have pages so this is a real pain


• no way to get off a photo that I can see other than leaving the thread


• no date that the thread was started

I'm sure there are more, I've only read a couple of threads, I hope these are things to be fixed rather than new features

Please can you revert to using "yesterday" and "today" rather than the dates. Makes it easier to know how up to date you are.

if you look at something like 'threads I'm on' it used to give you the first few lines of the subsequent messages. This has been reduced, and you can only see the first one, which really doesnt give the gist as well

If you NC, it no longer autofills, which is just a pain (if you are changing, youre doing it for a reason, so its just as irritation)

i also dislike how it looks - loads more pointless empty space

But at least you can still use square brackets for the MN emoticons that arent on the list such as

Threads in 'Conception' aren't appearing on Threads I'm On

@HellyR If you click the little arrow to the right of the previewed post, i think it takes you to that post

Ah yes thank you - those arrows are really faint on my browser and I missed them. That is my defect!

The trending section seems to not show trending threads any more. Maybe I'm dreaming...but I would have expected to see at least one thread from today here.

And the blank post still works, which is good!

That's a good spot. None of my trending threads are from today.

Having used so far today my comments or problems
Cant close pictures. The pictures take up the whole screen

want to be able to go to end of thread
dont want guest post at the top of every page
Prefer today and yesterday for times rather than dates (further back date is ok)

im sure other things will crop up. I’m on phone so don’t have the extra white space.

Argh, I'm getting emails every time there's a post on a thread I'm watching/on, as opposed to before when I'd only get them if there was a new post since the last time I read the thread. Inundated!

Yeah they're all from a week ago for me.

if you go in to a topic, it no longer shows you who commented last on a thread, just the time of the last post.

Can that be changed back to how it was? Because its much easier to see if someone else has commented by looking at a name than remembering when you last looked at a thread

I'm on the desktop version. If I go to the search box and start typing "blah" then some options appear. If I then search for "blah" more options (but not all) appear. I can totally see why this is better than a simple and clear link from the main page...

Now try and search for eg your own posts in the last 24 hours or last few days which was very simple previously. I cannot get those badly designed sliders set on such a narrow time range - my best effort is a few weeks which renders advanced search pretty useless. Its a shocking bad bit of design and I'd love to know what accessibility testing was done on it because its unusable for me with either fingers or software.

Ah dammit I take it back. You can quote a quoted post but it's a bloody mess. There's no clear way of seeing who posted which part. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Text to speech can’t open the arrows to open specific replies on followed threads or threads in I’m on, the add photo option also auto opens when text to speech hovers over it when attempting to post.

As someone who is colour blind, black writing on a grey background that clearly has a pinky undertone is very hard to read.

Not exactly accessible when visually impaired members can’t post.

I agree. I use Dragon (not for visual impairment though) and many of the links are not functioning normally and the advanced search sliders are unusable.

Is there a way to quickly switch to see all posts on a thread rather than 20 posts etc? I can see it in settings but I used to be able to change it quickly by clicking something next to the OP. I prefer having 10/20 posts per page but seeing all occasionally to search for a specific term etc.

Threads I’m on isn’t right because when I go to active there’s threads I’m on in the active list but not showing in threads I’m on

Also, even though I keep refreshing Trending, the same threads keep showing
