Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity

I've thought of two topics that might benefit from focussed attention:

Oxbridge entrance. (I was at one of the two, decades before that merited a column in The Times and your podcast transplanted to the BBC. But current parents who aren't familiar with either might like to chat about it with people who are.)

Air BnB - I've heard too many nasty stories, so would never dare. Would love to hear other people's experiences. Guess it might come under Holidaying?

Travel, yes. Air bnb. Higher education. Legal section too

FFS, are people seriously moaning about this?!
I think it sounds like a good idea, and I'm not black, I'm white!
What on earth's wrong with a section that you could get other opinions on things that people like myself would have no knowledge on (off top of my head, style and beauty - as white with poker straight blonde hair would have no clue about caring for afro hair for example!)
As if people are seriously saying "gizza white section! Erm, you're ON them most of the time, can you not just not go to any sections that don't interest you?

I'm sick of not being able to have one thread, just one where we can talk about something, one thing, to benefit us without white people coming on and hijacking it and diverting the attention to them

Black business owners are massively underrepresented. If black people want to spend their money building that economy up then they can do. It’s their money

EarringsandLipstick · 10/09/2020 18:33

I didn't say who could and couldn't post. I addressed my post to black people and not white people.

Well, you did.

Your thread title was Dear Black People, and in the very first line you said 'Not white people'.

That's fairly clearly saying you don't want white people to post.

YgritteSnow · 10/09/2020 18:33

Right not eight

I think it's only eight for black and BAME people to have their own small part of it where they can discuss and swiftly find information on the specific issues that only affect them. I genuinely don't understand the resistance to it.

I think some of the resistance is because op is adamant that this area will be for black people, not BAME. I think if MN are prepared to host a specific area for black topics then they should be willing to offer the same for other minority groups.

EmpressoftheMundane · 10/09/2020 18:35

“Separate but equal” didn’t work in the USA. I appreciate the OP’s intent is to create something that will benefit black people, but I hate to see fracturing and segregation happening by increments across our society. I’m pretty sure it’s black people who would lose out in the long run despite progressive intentions.

People who belong to other ethnicities can ask for a specific area, it isn’t the job of another minority to do that for them.

See that's a great idea which is why Mumsnet already have a multicultural families topic. Unfortunately it's not posted on much just like many other sections on the site as parts like chat and AIBU generate more traffic so provide more responses. In all honesty I can see the OPs black topic getting even less traffic as it's even more specific than the multicultural topic.

EDSGFC · 10/09/2020 18:38

Then that's fine. Wonder if MN will support it?

This. The B in BAME is for Black is it not?

BlueThistles · 10/09/2020 18:42

I love ScotsNet thank you Mumsnet 💕

sunshinesupermum · 10/09/2020 18:42

About the main point, having a separate section, I don't really have a view & think that's fine if MNHQ agree. My objection is purely due to your views & way of putting others down) Me too.

No.

Any thread by a black person is met by hostility because of racism.

Simple.
