Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

@MargeryBenson

You didsay that?

Why would you now lie? You said ' no white people.'

I along with many others , didn't imagine that

I addressed my post to black people, not white people. I didn't say who could comment.

I may address a question to midwives, that doesn't exclude a doctor from a answering.

OP am not derailing your thread - just trying to make sense of it.

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 17:52

@RoseTintedAtuin

It sounds like the space would be exclusionary to other minorities and segregate groups further rather than provide support so think I’ll pass Confused
The same way multicultural families is excluding other families?

Craicnet and Scotsnet just have a mixture of posts in them, no sub headings.

It took ages to be granted Scotsnet, I'm assuming it doesn't have sub heads because it was enough of an arse ache already.

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 17:54

Yes!

Also about black business like I suggested in my previous thread.

How we can support black businesses and highlighting them. Smile

Op there is no point if you want a specific group for a specific demographic of people try fb closed group. Too many people will feel overwhelmed with the fact that you want something they clearly take for granted and already have. Sharing your experiences as a black person, will always be a threat to a non black person, who can't fathom that even though they can't understand your experience, you have the right to exist in the same space and discuss the same issues that affect you in exactly the same way as they do. Rather than asking for sections of safe expressive spaces, the black community need to create their own.

Who's "them"?
NiceGerbil · 10/09/2020 17:59

Not seen the threads being referred to.

If there's an appetite for it then why not?

Fail to see why people have a problem with this tbh

SimonJT · 10/09/2020 17:59

Not black, but brown, so different issues but surely things like.

Businesses
An in the news section
Beauty/Fashion
Health
Education
Employment
Food/drink
TV

witchygrub · 10/09/2020 18:00

Can someone tell me what black parenting is? I don't think we all parent the same.

Do you think we should group them in a black section or have these topics separated?
OP posts:
midgebabe · 10/09/2020 18:02

Asking the black community to create their own space is not good...it's means they can't benefit from the great infrastructure and reach that mumsnet already has , it means they ( a typically disadvantaged comm7nity ) somehow need to find funding

Mumsnet will need strong monitoring . Possibly with stronger rules on derailing

@MNHQ I could be willing to support the additional work through your subscription thing

SimonJT · 10/09/2020 18:03

Not sure really.

I guess it could be like the relationship board and then have individual sections. It may be easier than having say a black section in the current TV section etc.

@sunshinesupermum

Where does the OP say that's it's Blacks only?

In the OP 'black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?' She has already got a long thread begun yesterday Black Section on MN covering this request.

Ah god sunshine I’m white and your making me cringe to death - turn it in!
OverTheRainbow88 · 10/09/2020 18:06

@witchygrub

It may be the small things people take for granted and don’t have to think about... such as, I spent over two looking for a black doll for my niece which has similar hair to hers.

It could be about school rules and hair.

Black parenting- teaching my boys from a young age about stop and searches, how their white friends may get away with be cheeky/running away but they won’t.

Primary schools choices- outstanding one is pretty much all white, how will my boys fit in?

Teaching my boys from a young age not to be offended if someone crosses the road to try to avoid them

Venicelover · 10/09/2020 18:07

I am still of the opinion that it is divisive.

Why would you have to declare your ethnicity before posting?

I also dislike the 'back black business' comments. Why would you actively seek out a business based on colour?

Also, is racism only a one way street? The comments about white people are awful.

I post occasionally on Scotsnet but it ticks along quite slowly. I would think black only would be similar numbers - unless a lot of interest comes from abroad. So maybe S&B and Chat to start then expand as requested/required.
