Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

A school/education section? Currently trying to decide which primary school to put as first choice, the outstanding out is 90% white and the closer one is about 85% BAME but has a poor reputation- would be good to chat about that
Yes to this too.

A section for areas to live in. I see a lot of posts asking which areas are most accepting of minority ethnicities.

I think mental health is very important too. Given the statistics.

No one has said only black people would be able to post there.

Not to get into a debate but the OP literally said white people cant post on her earlier thread so I doubt she would welcome white people posting on the black subforum.

sunshinesupermum · 10/09/2020 17:40

BAME covers anyone that isn't white. That isn't what I'm working on.

OP How many sections do you think MN can cope with? Original (inclusive) MN, Black MN, BAME MN ... I pity MNHQ!

If you want specific subjects covered eg black hair then begin a thread in style and beauty.

OverTheRainbow88 · 10/09/2020 17:41

The previous thread turned into a debate about whether or not people agree.

Hopefully this thread can just be about sharing ideas of what to include if it does go ahead?

TinySleepThief · 10/09/2020 17:43

Although to answer your actual question I doubt many people would post on the sub forum so splitting it into more specific topics properly wouldn't work as well as you think as it wouldn't get the traffic.

midgebabe · 10/09/2020 17:43

( white person here )

Might it be an idea to have a general chat as well as specific themes?

I hadn't seen this. But I still think the defensiveness at the suggestion is disappointing. Although sadly not surprising.

Don't know, don't care. I'm advocating for a black section. You can do as you like.

Also, don't tell me where to post Smile

I'll ignore you from now on. Derailing my thread.

Imagine the uproar if someone suggested a whites only section!
Oh, you didn't!
Bluntness100 · 10/09/2020 17:45

The previous thread isn’t deleted. She’s literally posted it in her op.

TOFO1965 · 10/09/2020 17:45

I can't decide if this is deliberately provocative...

BaronessBomburst · 10/09/2020 17:46

I see. I missed the deleted thread so didnt realise I wasn't welcome.

TinySleepThief · 10/09/2020 17:46

Not to derail but I have to ask do you genuinely not see the irony to this statement?

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 17:46

Yeah I feel like it would be great to have a general black section with some way to add in sub topics that aren't separate if that makes any sense at all.

"Not all white people" Grin

MargeryBenson · 10/09/2020 17:47

@Bluntness100 she had a thread less than an hour ago that was zapped. It said ' no white people to post please'

That isn't what I said.

I didn't say who could and couldn't post. I addressed my post to black people and not white people.

sunshinesupermum · 10/09/2020 17:48

Sorry if you think I'm being defensive but I'm playing devil's advocate here. so rather than listening to her experience? OP hasn't given any specific instances of her black experience not being covered by MN.

Has she tried posting within the numerous topics available? perhaps heading her enquiry in Property/DIY 'where do you recommend places that are inclusive of black/BAME people' or in Education 'should I send my black child to a school that is almost exclusively white?'

Bluntness100 · 10/09/2020 17:48

Margery, thanks,

Op, surely you want inclusion, right?

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 17:48

@TinySleepThief

No.

I'm not telling anyone where to post. Just asking that the posts are relevant to the topic: ideas for a black section.

OP posts:
MargeryBenson · 10/09/2020 17:49

You didsay that?

Why would you now lie? You said ' no white people.'

I along with many others , didn't imagine that

sunshinesupermum · 10/09/2020 17:49

I addressed my post to black people and not white people. which is the same as saying white people not wanted here!

witchygrub · 10/09/2020 17:50

What the hell is black parenting?

RoseTintedAtuin · 10/09/2020 17:51

It sounds like the space would be exclusionary to other minorities and segregate groups further rather than provide support so think I’ll pass Confused

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 10/09/2020 17:51

Imagine the uproar if someone suggested a whites only section!

Us scottish folk were fed up with everyone answering our questions and assuming we were English, so we got scotsnet for more specific questions.

There is literally no difference between that and needing a space to discuss issues specific to being black.

It doesn't stop scottish people posting anywhere else on MN, it doesn't stop English people from posting on scotsnet, but it's a more understanding space.

What is so bloody hard to understand about that?
