Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

@Venicelover

I am still of the opinion that it is divisive.

Why would you have to declare your ethnicity before posting?

I also dislike the 'back black business' comments. Why would you actively seek out a business based on colour?

Also, is racism only a one way street? The comments about white people are awful.

White people have been giving white people business for centuries

White peoples get more better jobs than blacks people!

Ffs!!! Are you really this ignorant!!!

spinthebottle · 10/09/2020 18:14

I’m black and I support this.

I would like to ask if similar outcry was caused when Scotsnet was born?

Or if you feel uncomfortable about there been a black only section please tell me why. I promise there is nothing to be afraid of.

Hi Op,

I'm just adding a quick msg to wish you well. I think it's a greatly needed, long overdue change.

I won't post any ideas as I'm not black and it's not about what I think.

I got to page 3 of your previous thread and really couldn't read more. I did quite like how your point was made for you, repeatedly, by white people being defensive, insecure, hateful etc. One thing Reading those many comments has made me that even more worried about the undiluted twattery that won't go unchecked by authentic voices from other lived experiences. And I know where I'd rather be hanging out( quietly though) .

And I can't think of a single 'genuine' question from a white person specifically about an issue to do with race that can't be answered properly on the main boards either. No need to come along specifically to ask that in a lot of cases..

Plus, two years ago was a long time ago on this crazy planet. The reception this will get at MN Towers may well be more welcoming in the era of increased awareness. Fingers crossed

OverTheRainbow88 · 10/09/2020 18:15

Why would you actively seek out a business based on colour?

The same reason I would seek out a family run restaurant/cafe than a large chain restaurant

A small local business rather than a chain

ODFOx · 10/09/2020 18:15

Good grief; the original post had some dodgy opinions but this one has some awful ones!
If the black people on the site ask for somewhere to discuss issues which particularly impact them then why the hell not? What possible reason could there be to justify an Irish board but no black one?
OP, I hope you get your board but please stay on the main boards too: we need broad range of opinion and we can only be a more interesting site with all sorts of people sharing their opinions and thoughts. MN is better for your input. Smile

spinthebottle · 10/09/2020 18:15

I don’t mean black only obviously in my post I mean a section for black people to discuss. Sorry I was fast typing and not concentrating

BIWI · 10/09/2020 18:18

@sunshinesupermum

OP am not derailing your thread - just trying to make sense of it.
Really? It doesn't sound like it. The OP has been very clear about why she has suggested this.
PablosHoney · 10/09/2020 18:18

‘Oooh what about a white only section’ such a lazy argument.

FrippEnos · 10/09/2020 18:18

Venicelover
Also, is racism only a one way street? The comments about white people are awful.

The OP's opinion on white people and whether they can suffer racism is pretty well known. Her opinions aside.

If there is a need for it why not?
As others have said "if it fills a need etc."

Johnny1963 · 10/09/2020 18:18

Thanks for raising this OP. The responses to your threads makes it obvious why we need a section like this.

In terms of format I'd go for a general section initially and see if more specific sections are needed.

It would be great to read a thread about Black people's experiences which wasn't derailed by naive/ignorant questions, sneered at, belittled or shouted down.

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 18:19

@ShitStain

Can we also have an South East Asian section, an Asian section, a Jewish section, a South American section, an American section, a Canadian section, a travellers section, an Icelandic section, an Italian section, a Middle East section and a mixed race section for all those sections too please.

Sorry if I’ve not mentioned anyone, do feel free to add.

I'm sure HQ will be happy to answer.

Their email is [email protected]

Youre welcome

OP, you are just rude really. You sound bitter.

@OverTheRainbow88

Thanks for that. I'm raising a girl and teaching her to love her afro. It would probably be different if I had a son, with stop and search etc.

If anybody wants any of those, then they're always free to ask MNHQ.

Is that a problem?

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 10/09/2020 18:21

I've thought of two topics that might benefit from focussed attention:

Oxbridge entrance. (I was at one of the two, decades before that merited a column in The Times and your podcast transplanted to the BBC. But current parents who aren't familiar with either might like to chat about it with people who are.)

Air BnB - I've heard too many nasty stories, so would never dare. Would love to hear other people's experiences. Guess it might come under Holidaying?

Yes, I get that, but people of all colours run those kinds of businesses.

In my experience, most people go where they get good service and value and for many other reasons. I can honestly say that I have never chosen a business based on the colour of the owner, and in most cases how would I know that anyway?

DaphneFanshaw · 10/09/2020 18:22

I think this is a great idea.
It's really depressing to see that so many posts have been deleted.

I wonder why someone who is black might be bitter?

Hint: just read the replies on this and the other thread for a start

lboogy · 10/09/2020 18:23

Black hair
Parenting
Work / employment
Maybe a AIBU section too - where we can talk about every day micro aggressions and racism without the white women weighing in with all lives matter b.s

PatricksRum · 10/09/2020 18:24

@ExTwitter

Ah, did I?

Could you copy and paste where I said this please

Sure thing.
Here you go:

@PatricksRum
When white people stop killing us and abusing us and we are treated fairly we will stop requesting extra measures.

Now if a white.person posted that and said "when black people stop stabbing us..."
That'd be racist..

I thought you referred to me saying ALL white people? Or were you just generalising? Funny that.

Hmm... Yeah.. real funny..

You also shouted that white people need to calm down. Again, if a white person posted BLACK PEOPLE NEED TO CALM DOWN.
Racist..

IamTomHanks · 10/09/2020 18:27

Ah jeebus. Sorry you've had to go to these lengths to be recognized OP. The right wing takeover of MN is becoming more & more obvious every day.

I am bitter.

I'm sick of being racially abused.
I'm sick of us being murdered.
I'm sick of worrying how inclusive a restaurant/ bar/ town may be.
I'm sick of being disadvantaged.
I'm sick of the anxiety I feel about the thread to my black male loved ones.
I'm sick of not being able to have one thread, just one where we can talk about something, one thing, to benefit us without white people coming on and hijacking it and diverting the attention to them.
