Effective measures against threads that encourage racism and misogyny

rockingchaircandle · 07/06/2020 09:45

I posted yesterday about the series of threads on Meghan Markle. In emails MN have acknowledged that they struggle with the subtle and not-so-subtle racism these threads bring.

The post led to discussions where many women, especially women of colour, explained how these threads made them feel.

Posters who have formed a clique around anti-Meghan threads, used another thread to organised the spamming of the thread to derail it. MN have also said they are going to take a longer, overall look at the posters who we feel are not here with good intentions. However the entire thread was deleted, as the posters intended and the debate was shut down, and those voices lost.

Unfortunately the thread degenerated to the point it was no longer salvageable, and so we had no option but to delete it. We want to allow free discussion as much as possible, especially on such an important topic as anti-racism, but sometimes when we have to make lots of deletions, threads end up with so many holes that it makes no sense to keep them up. We hope you understand where we're coming from. The derailing posts were obvious - they were either personal attacks or reference to TV shows etc. They could have deleted them. There are now another 2 threads up about Meghan Markle.

So, I know this will probably get deleted, but to the people who posted yesterday I just wanted a message to show that not everyone agrees with this. I'm sorry, MN have heard - I hope they will do something more effective if they truly think anti-racism is an important topic.

@Cheetoz

Calling a thread ‘Effective measures against threads that encourage racism and misogyny’ and *@MNHQ* on every post you write but sticking it in the royal family section seems counterintuitive.

Especially as threads appearing on the wrong boards has a been a particular bugbear for you in the past.

You should move it.

It's about Meghan and the racism that has appeared on posts about her.

So it’s a TAAT?

@CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate

Stop it. You have provided no evidence. Disagreeing is not bullying.

@Cheetoz

RockingchaircandIe

STOP THESE THREADS!!!!!!!!

The FIRST post on a thread titled ‘Harry and Meghan News’.

So how does this fit with your narrative?

That was someone impersonating me. You found it pretty quickly.

I await your apology.

People are being racist elsewhere is not the great argument you think it is. There is legitimate criticism of Meghan, there is obsessive criticism of her and there is racist and misogynistic abuse of her all over the internet.

This thread is asking what @MNHQ are doing to address the racism they have acknowledged. But you know that. Most of the posters here are attacking me, dragging in other sites etc, just to disrupt this discussion.

The only underhand tactics have come from one very obvious nasty, childish group of posters.

TheSan · 08/06/2020 12:27

@rockingchaircandle I’m really sorry someone impersonated you, now that is clearly bullying & is so wrong.

Cheetoz · 08/06/2020 12:29

There are many posters awaiting your apology.

Perhaps if you were to provide it and agree to stop bullying and attempting to control and derail any talk of M then we could all move on?

There are very many posters here who will probably be quicker than you to report any posts that are racist or break talk guidelines on any future threads.

ButteryPuffin · 08/06/2020 12:32

I've just reported the capital R rocking chair post. How on earth can the site allow an identical username other than a capital letter to be created? That's just ridiculous. Doing that to deliberately create confusion and deception about a poster is unacceptable. It is also extremely difficult to spot - I would have assumed it must be the same poster - but rocking has said it's not her and therefore I accept that. I hope MN can delete it and deal with the poster accordingly.

Cheetoz · 08/06/2020 12:36

Strange indeed. Great way to derail a thread as soon as it begins though.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 08/06/2020 12:46

MNHQ have confirmed it's someone impersonating rockingchaircandle on the other thread.

rockingchaircandle · 08/06/2020 12:46

@Cheetoz stop the bullying allegations please. You have no evidence, its very transparent.

OP you know full well what you’ve been doing and you’ve repeatedly been told the impact you’ve had on posters.

It’s a real shame that you’re not willing to apologise but I have to say, it’s nothing less than I expected.

CallmeAngelina · 08/06/2020 12:54

I'm going to repeat the suggestion I made on the other thread, that perhaps it's time that you take a step away from MN for a little while. You seem to be getting very worked up, which is detracting from your point.

Roussette · 08/06/2020 12:54

God, that is awful. Impersonating someone, going to the lengths of setting up a profile by altering one letter of someone they want to have a go at.

Says it all. And whoever did that, you are really doing yourself no favours whatsoever.

CallmeAngelina · 08/06/2020 12:55

Roussette, Apparently the impersonator has de-regged very quickly.

Roussette · 08/06/2020 12:58

I bet they have.

Cowardly pathetic behaviour.

Yes, I know. That's how real bullies work.

I'll let the thread stand. The point is there.

No one has produced one piece of evidence that I've bullied them, other than I have disagreed with them and they don't like it. But it's so much easier to make these allegations.

What I've asked is very clear in the OP.

@Cheetoz Yes, that's how accusations work isn't it. There's loads of evidence, you should just remember it. I think the fact you just popped up here today to make the same accusation without evidence repeatedly is clearly just a bullying tactic.

I don't want the thread to derail, so I'll leave it here.

OP posts:
ButteryPuffin · 08/06/2020 13:27

That's how real bullies work.

What is? Can you explain this?

CallmeAngelina · 08/06/2020 13:27

rockingchaircandle, Just to be very clear, are you suggesting I am bullying you?
Because to my recollection, I have had no interaction with you on this site (or any other) and have made my suggestion purely on the observation that you seem very angry.

No, I wasn't accusing you of bullying me, sorry if that wasn't clear.

You said that I should step away because it was making me angry and that was detracting from my point.

I think that is fair. This morning with the impersonation was the tipping point - it did might think 'what's the point?' as it was designed to. As well as a new poster popping up to make the same accusation without any proof. Organising spamming from other boards. Taking it to other sites. It's a whole other level for me. There's no discussions to be had in good faith with this group of posters. I'm definitely not saying you are responsible or part of it.

It will detract from the point that I've made in my OP though, and I think that is very important, so I don't want to do that.
