Effective measures against threads that encourage racism and misogyny

I posted yesterday about the series of threads on Meghan Markle. In emails MN have acknowledged that they struggle with the subtle and not-so-subtle racism these threads bring.

The post led to discussions where many women, especially women of colour, explained how these threads made them feel.

Posters who have formed a clique around anti-Meghan threads, used another thread to organised the spamming of the thread to derail it. MN have also said they are going to take a longer, overall look at the posters who we feel are not here with good intentions. However the entire thread was deleted, as the posters intended and the debate was shut down, and those voices lost.

Unfortunately the thread degenerated to the point it was no longer salvageable, and so we had no option but to delete it. We want to allow free discussion as much as possible, especially on such an important topic as anti-racism, but sometimes when we have to make lots of deletions, threads end up with so many holes that it makes no sense to keep them up. We hope you understand where we're coming from. The derailing posts were obvious - they were either personal attacks or reference to TV shows etc. They could have deleted them. There are now another 2 threads up about Meghan Markle.

So, I know this will probably get deleted, but to the people who posted yesterday I just wanted a message to show that not everyone agrees with this. I'm sorry, MN have heard - I hope they will do something more effective if they truly think anti-racism is an important topic.

I strangely didn't know it's new connotations either. I am supposed to be angry about it and failing miserably at what is expected of me.

I'm presuming as they have not popped up again and none of the childish tactics have been employed that they have been banned. Maybe some are still here and have changed their name and behaviour, which is good!

I think this is pretty uppity though.

Not according to the OED et al.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 10/06/2020 18:16

Not only are we going to be forced to eat chlorinated chicken and accept the USA's dreadful environmental standards but now we are going to have to accept their usage of our language. Almost looks like an imperialist takeover by USA of UK.

candilemon · 10/06/2020 18:16

Referencing: the definition of the word in question.

When we first met DH called me 'uppity' as a joke (yes it was a joke). This was mid eighties Scotland. Definitely no racist connotations there. It was not a racist term here. US English is not UK English. See fanny, bum, fag etc.

I think their childish tactics are alive and well. Trolling from another site is a bit teenage.

HarryDaylight · 10/06/2020 18:55

Trolling from another site is a bit teenage

What do you mean? What site?

I heard it's a new place where mums like to chat.

The first bit of light relief I’ve had on MN in a while. God forbid it should last.

How does one troll from another site?

derxa · 10/06/2020 20:10

The first bit of light relief I’ve had on MN in a while. God forbid it should last. So grim at the moment

candilemon · 10/06/2020 21:48

The other side is less so. Perhaps a bit earnest, though!

God knows. How does one troll from anywhere? Presumably you join the site you want to troll on. There's plenty of it all over t'internet I believe.
PinkPlasticBox · 10/06/2020 23:26

The MN statement is really clear on where we all stand
Yes it is, and I'm really glad about that. Particularly that they have confirmed that calling people derailers is unacceptable, and that aggressively closing down other posters because they disagree with the prevailing opinion is not on either. It will make the re-reading of a number of threads somewhat more interesting now.

ButteryPuffin · 10/06/2020 23:58

Returning to this, I have to say, @rockingchaircandle, that I find it disappointing that having stated something as if it were fact - specifically, referring to 'a group of posters who are now mainly banned' - you then say, when I asked questions about it, that you 'presumed' it to be the case. That's quite some way from the standards of discussion you have been saying you wanted to have, based on evidence, and it's what you have been criticising about many of the posts on MM. Don't state things as if they were facts when they are simply speculation. It calls any poster's credibility into question when they do that.

Quote Roussette

What does AFAIC mean please? I’ve seen you put this a number of times

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 11/06/2020 08:42

I'm not Roussette 😂 but AFAIC means, as far as I'm concerned.

ToastedHaMSandwich · 12/06/2020 12:44

A whole new level of white privilege demonstrated by Jessica Mulroney, MM’s best friend. Her attitude and behaviour is utterly shocking. Wonder how MM and especially Harry will be able to tolerate this

Threatening to end someone’s livelihood through one’s own power just because they can. That is absolute abuse.
