IT IS UNREASONABLE TO WANT TO GET RID OF THE AIBU BIT

ellasmum1 · 13/05/2007 10:30

I agree, get rid!

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 13/05/2007 10:44

thanskyou flmey

Tamum · 13/05/2007 11:25

Pruni just said it all really. Something is definitely making MN more trivially adversarial than it used to be, and AIBU seems to be at least contributing to that.

www for your superb summing up!

Tamum · 13/05/2007 11:27

Oh, and having just looked again at active convos I completely agree with Aitch that it would be good to at least limit the number of simultaneous threads on any one topic. I don't think keeping it to one thread would work, but they are really mushrooming in some cases.

lulumama · 13/05/2007 11:28

i'd like the option of being able to include / exclude, like buying & selling

because other wise chat & other subjects will get bogged down in these threads

i don;t see how the topic itself is making MN more adversarial, when the threads were being done anyway, just not in a specific topic

some of them are patently unreasonable, some are not, a lot are just venting /whinging, which we all like to do from time to time

Bananaknickers · 13/05/2007 11:32

there is an option at the top

lulumama · 13/05/2007 11:47

no , there is no option to exclude AIBU, there is for buying & selling, which i do exclude!

foxinsocks · 13/05/2007 11:49

they weren't being done anyway though lulu - certainly not in the volume that they are now.

Aitch - I also post on digitalspy but I have no idea how they actually merge those threads. Digitalspy is certainly moderated more heavily than mumsnet (appalling grammar, can't get my brain in gear today).

lulumama · 13/05/2007 11:50

well, there seemed to be lots of threads in chat about situations, that are now being seen in AIBU.....at least if they are in one topic, and there could be an option to exclude, it would make it easier to avoid!

AitchTwoOh · 13/05/2007 11:50

lulu, i think that the reason they are kicking off is that they are attritional in nature, basically you have to agree or disagree with the OP's reasonableness or otherwise, rather than address the issue at hand.

what a lot of (dull) people seem to want is to be told that they are right to be feeling irritated/wounded etc but the fact that it's a black/white, yes/no answer means that people don't have to pause to explain themselves if they disagree.

then the OP gets cross because people are saying she's unreasonable (almost as if she hasn't actually understood the Whole Point of the topic) and then it goes haywire.

so i think that writing it out long hand, as it were, might force people responding to pause and think about what they want to say, rather than make the snap judgement. well, you'd hope so, anyway...

having had a shufti at the list they seem to fall into two basic catagories.

a. things that are possibly worth a discussion, and would easily fit into one of the other subject headings......for example some of the 'AIBU to be pissed off with dh' could just as easily fit into 'relationships'

b. Stuff which is, to be very charitable, trivial, and falling into the catagory of 'life can be mildly irritating on times'. These are the one that make me want to yell, 'Oh FFS, bloody get on with life'

Granted my section b will not the the same as every MNetters, but I bet there is a fair amount of overlap.

I'd like an 'Amusing Whimsy' section....eg if MNetters were 6 inches high thread
