oh, so you were the voice saying something like 'Get a life" and it all went whiney and irrational?
Sounds familiar
(Not you saying Get a Life - the other bit!)

Blu · 12/05/2007 20:30

All of the below!
And LOL at tamum's controlled experiment.

It has had it's season. It is not having a good effect on the nature of MN.

Porpoise · 12/05/2007 20:32

maybe we should fight back with a AIBR (am I being reasonable) section?
We could all be calm and measured and self-controlled and congratulate each other on our super-non-whiney maturity

brimfull · 12/05/2007 20:32

yes,get rid of it

Tamum · 12/05/2007 20:32

Good idea porpoise

Agree with Blu, it's not having a good effect.

FrannyandZooey · 12/05/2007 20:34

No porpoise, I was being a bit self-deprecating

I meant that I was whining and when people said "YABU" I felt irrational

(yes thank you Tamum I also thought I was being reasonable, but the thing is, when you post in AIBU you are inviting people to say "yes", so whining about it is not really in order)

expatinscotland · 12/05/2007 20:37

The entire premise of it is superfluous because if you have to even ask that question, well, deep down you already know the answer.

Porpoise · 12/05/2007 20:38

aha, Franny

Well, that's what's wrong with the whole idea of it, isn't it?
It just invites people either to egg you on in your whininess or to tell you you're silly to whine.
Neither or which is very constructive or witty - the two main good points of MN, IME

Kathyis6incheshigh · 12/05/2007 20:39

Thing is, it's not even really a 'topic' as such, more just type of post.
It's like having a topic called 'Help wanted' or 'Upset' or 'General moans and whinges'.
None of these would make sense, so why should AIBU be presumed to?

carriemumsnet · 12/05/2007 21:39

Well thanks for the feedback, didn't realise folks felt so strongly!

Does everyone feel this way or are these folks just being unreasonable? (sorry it's sat night and I just couldn't resist )

Post your views here and we'll certainly consider them.

Cheers MNHQ

I agree with others. Get rid of AIBU thread. Too many things are going in there when they belong in more specific topics.

Spidermama · 12/05/2007 21:44

Those threads do lack thoughtful debate I agree.

Saturn74 · 12/05/2007 21:44

I'm not an AIBU topic fan.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 21:48

Oooh that is SO UNREASONABLE

Ladymuck · 12/05/2007 21:50

I'd vote for ditching AIBU too. It is depressing.

The ante/post natal one is an interesting poitn - perhaps we could have another check button for these? I have to say that I feel a bit of an outsider when I look at Active Convos at times. I think that the clubs are an asset to MN, but not to active convos.

Yes - get rid - it's dumbing down and not needed.

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 21:51

Can we please have an 'I'm an unreasonably whiney cow but it's my turn' section then?

Saturn74 · 12/05/2007 21:53

LOL.
Or if the AIBU topic is to remain, can we draw lots for it - with only 10 people a day being allowed to post.

bristols · 12/05/2007 21:54

I agree too. Not a AIBU fan either

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 21:54

Oh god no, then we'd have in chat 'I'm NEVER allowed to post in AIBU'

rowan1971 · 12/05/2007 21:56

I think (as someone else has suggested) that there should be more buttons to exclude certain threads altogether - there should be a way to save filter preferences. I, for instance, would like to avoid all the clubs. It would save my poor digits a lot of unnecessary scrolling.

(Don't really give a monkey's either way about AIBU, though.)

whomovedmychocolate · 12/05/2007 21:56

Or perhaps we could rename the section 'inane shit I came up with because I couldn't see anything in active convos that took my fancy'?

twentypence · 12/05/2007 21:57

Oh come on - for those of us with 4 year olds who don't need the ante or post natal, conception, sleep, breastfeeding or weaning threads but haven't quite got to the education stage without AIBU there really isn't much left to have a good fight in.

Blu · 12/05/2007 21:58

Can't you just, please, ban anyone else who starts a thread about Crocs? Or a spin-off / reactionary thread which pleads for one aspect of a discussion only?
