Why has Stratters been banned for reporting suspected Trolls as per MN policy?

SoPassRemarkable · 07/08/2017 10:23

Long standing, sensible poster.

Says she didn't troll hunt on the threads but reported. And has been banned for over reporting? Hardly her fault if there's lots of trolls to report?

Totally puts me off reporting any suspicions I have.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 07/08/2017 12:13

Nevertheless, she persisted???

SoPassRemarkable · 07/08/2017 12:19

Persisted with what?

Reporting different trolls?

OP posts:
ConstanceCraving · 07/08/2017 12:23

On the other thread Kate said there would be always something else along with reporting trolls to why someone was banned.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 07/08/2017 12:26

Persisted with what?

Reporting different trolls?

Which HQ have always strongly encouraged. Stratters has been around forever.

SoPassRemarkable · 07/08/2017 12:27

Well if that's the case I think they need to tell Stratters what she's done as she's genuinely clueless. I think she deserves an email telling her she's banned which she hasn't had.

OP posts:
PelorusJack · 07/08/2017 12:36

Could she accidentally have appeared to sock puppet. As I mentioned before I name change every few days and it's a pain to always remember to namechange back to a name I've used on a thread earlier?

I understand that you could get banned for disagree with how MNHQ deal with issues especially if you do it belligerently but simple repeated troll reporting sounds very unlikely. I bet there is something else.

AmyGMumsnet · 07/08/2017 12:37

Hi

Stratters was banned by the MNHQ team back on July 11th. You'll understand we're not going to go into detail about specifics but to clarify, we don't ban for overreporting, we value all reports we get in and we do read them all. We do ban Mumsnetters who consistently break Talk Guidelines and also Mumsnetters whom we have had to contact numerous times about their conduct on the boards.

If you see something on the boards you think HQ should be aware of, by all means hit the report button and the team will take a look as soon as possible.

Whiskwarrior · 07/08/2017 12:39

I've been a member for about five years now and rarely post anymore.

I can confirm that i've also seen emails sent by HQ to long-standing, sensible, helpful posters, essentially saying 'you keep disagreeing with our moderation/questioning our policies so we're removing your posting abilities permanently '. Not 'you've done something wrong'. They are banning people for questioning them. How very 1984.

I logged in just to post this and to say that I think HQ are behaving in a disgusting manner towards the people who helped get this site off the ground and keep it going. I'm not one of those people, I haven't been here long enough, but I am friends with some of them outside MN.

Banning people for disagreeing with HQ. Wow.

SoPassRemarkable · 07/08/2017 12:42

Amy, I've seen the PMsbetween mnhq and Stratters.

In her last few messages she reported two threads. Katherine got back to her and said both would be left to stand. Stratters replied saying "I appreciate that you have asked me to not challenge her directly, but I have to say that it is extremely difficult sitting back and doing what feels like nothing because MNHQ consistently fail to address her posts. I will adhere to what you have asked, but I would also ask that in return we can be assured that future reports will actually be dealt with in a timely, and appropriate manner."

So she did say she would adhere to what you'd asked of her even if she would find it difficult.

That's the last communication she had with mnhq.

She's then banned.

She's emailed asking why and had no reply.

Hi Niffler,

Thanks for getting in touch about these posts and for reporting your concerns to us rather than posting on the boards.

We've had a look and as neither of them break Talk Guidelines, we'll be leaving them to stand.

With the first post you reported - we aren't able to verify anyone's experiences on the site. When it comes to medical advice; we do say to our users that we haven't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here, and suggest consulting a GP if there are concerns.

While the second post is pretty robust; we would say it doesn't quite cross the line.

We don't always reply to reports, but we do read and carefully consider each and every one. If a post you've reported hasn't been removed - it's likely because we felt they didn't break guidelines. We'll always take a look at any reports you send our way but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be removed.

We quite understand that our general approach won't suit everyone but, in truth, it isn't going to change in the foreseeable future, we're afraid.

With best wishes
Katherine
MNHQ

That was in response to this - I have removed the posters identity. The first part of my email is too identifying.

In spite of this, you have not made a statement on the thread, neither have you removed her post.

On the second thread, X is rude and aggressive towards the OP, and makes a very upsetting and unsubstantiated observation about her home life. This is patently both against Talk Guidelines, and also against the ethos of the site. Again, her post still stands, despite it being reported twice by me, and also by others.
I appreciate that you have asked me to not challenge her directly, but I have to say that it is extremely difficult sitting back and doing what feels like nothing because MNHQ consistently fail to address her posts. I will adhere to what you have asked, but I would also ask that in return we can be assured that future reports will actually be dealt with in a timely, and appropriate manner.

Regards

Stratters/TheNiffler

Glad you posted that So!

ToEarlyForDecorations · 07/08/2017 13:04

I'm assuming the thread about a woman having her vagina criticised for being to wet by her boyfriend was a sex troll - probably a man ?

Mychildcouldnotbreaatfeed · 07/08/2017 13:09

I was reporting. I was told to take it to the thread.

Hq. That's not consistent

Why has Stratters been banned for reporting suspected Trolls as per MN policy?
Butterymuffin · 07/08/2017 13:11

If you're going to get banned for reporting, you may as well troll hunt openly. Might put the Daily Fail and/or the Wright Stuff off ripping the threads off. Or maybe not.

itisasmallworldisntit · 07/08/2017 13:11

.

BishopBrennansArse · 07/08/2017 13:12

Don't forget DawnDonna and Samcro have been banned for complaining about disablism.

TeamCersei · 07/08/2017 13:14

I would say that it's likely they are trying to get rid of the old timers as they don't care anymore.

I don't think that's the case.
I thinks it's more a case of 'some' old timers think they are above and beyond reproach and that they can get away with things like troll hunting and goading.

I'm sorry that Stratters (whoever she/he is) has been banned, but I'm
pleased that MN seem to be treating people more fairly.

New or 'Old-Timers' - we should all be treated the same.

SoPassRemarkable · 07/08/2017 13:16

But she hasnt troll hunted.

OP posts:
whereismyparachute · 07/08/2017 13:18

Anecdoche , I reported one poster for constantly bombarding a thread about 'disablism' when in my opinion it wasn't at all.

The poster in question was deliberately trying to de rail threads and cause trouble.

I have no idea if it's the same one but I do think that MNHQ acted correctly if it is.

I am getting really fed up with the heavy moderating at the behest of certain people on here and have had my share of deletions which I felt were unfair but MNHQ reinstated at least one post and were decent enough to apologise.

I have been here since 2003 and don't think
that they do a bad job given the size of the site. I have gone over to Reddit for now though due to the moderating issues.

I still have quite some loyalty to mnet though as have been good to me in the past over an issue which was picked up in the press.

BishopBrennansArse · 07/08/2017 13:20

So you were reporting a poster for an opinion? Not personal attacks etc?

Nice, that.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/08/2017 13:21

Decorations that thread is still there.

YY ButteryMuffin, may as well troll hunt on-thread.
To quote my grandma, 'may as well be hung as a sheep than a lamb'. Well, I think that's what her quote means. I don't often get to say it Grin

MadMags · 07/08/2017 13:22

Please don't derail this thread!

Mychildcouldnotbreaatfeed · 07/08/2017 13:23

I was reporting a poster for lying about what happened on a deleted thread.

I was told to take it to the thread. The lies were to be allowed to stand.

nachogazpacho · 07/08/2017 13:23

Why would anyone pm someone they thought was trolling? That's not going to help anyone. That's just feeding the troll. If you don't agree with a post why not say so on the thread, not in a pm. Reporting is good. Pm-ing people you don't agree with, even if you are justified and they're an arse, is something else entirely. I can see stratters was feeling unheard but I can see why mnhq did not want her to continue to pm someone she didn't agree with.

I hope I've understood that correctly. If not, my apologies.

AmyGardner · 07/08/2017 13:24

Urgh to 'we're afraid we won't be' doing anything about trolls or posts that break rules.

Don't be afraid, at least own your decisions and actions, HQ.
