For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads

HQ. Please. Make a decision about the ads. Either make them less intrusive or give us an option to pay a sub and get rid of them.

I'm on laptop, mobile on phone and sometimes Ipad. They make the site unusable and I'm going to be investigating an adblock today.

I am sure that is not what you want - I understand the need for ads to generate revenue, but when they are so intrusive that they interfere with the ability to use the site then you've gone a bit too far in the wrong direction.

Also, I wouldn't buy anything that is advertised like that, in an intrusive ad that pisses me off, because instead of thinking fluffy warm thoughts about the product being advertised, I'm thinking "FUCK THE FUCK OFF YOU ANNOYING TWAT" which I am sure is not the intention of the advertiser.

Most of my screen page on the mobile site is now either a massive, often inappropriate, advert; or blank white space. There's hardly any 'thread' and I can't see what part of the thread I'm in.

It is slow to load. It is often not scrolling at all.

The shortcut buttons keep disappearing.

Yes, to me, that is pretty unusable.

furtivefeline · 24/05/2017 06:44

Ah, this explains why my data is getting used up so quickly. Very annoying! I don't really use any other sites while out and about, just MN. Wish we could do something about it!

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 24/05/2017 06:55

It's like watching tv in America.
There are more ads than the thing you actually tuned in for.

Ok MNHQ I give in. I'll gladly pay to use the site.
How much do you want?

PhilODox · 24/05/2017 07:14

Chrome browser on a Samsung galaxy android. Mobile site not app.

Snap8TheCat · 24/05/2017 07:22

Every thread like is goes the same way. They won't change it.

'We're struggling to replicate the issue at our end' Youve been given screen shots! You don't need to replicate the issue, we're showing you.

My keyboard also flashes different colours if it's over an ad and the ad keeps changing. It's very off putting.

Charlieismydarlin · 24/05/2017 07:23

This. Totally.

What the fuck is the ad taking up one quarter of my screen at the side, on my iPhone?

Is money really that tight at MNHQ? Cos I would rather pay a fiver a month

Chasingsquirrels · 24/05/2017 07:26

This seems to totally explain the mobile data issue I've had recently as well.

metalmum15 · 24/05/2017 07:29

I always use mumsnet on my Samsung and I never get any ads! ! (Not complaining, mind you. ) That's why I prefer my phone to my laptop.

Adblocker plus works well on iPhones but then there is masses of white space 😕

OnionKnight · 24/05/2017 07:54

This is utterly ridiculous, I've had a massive advert appear on my screen everytime I load a thread this morning, even if I'm just loading the next page.

PringlesInTheFlySpace · 24/05/2017 08:11

Can only fit two lines of text on my screen around the adverts! iPhone mobile site. The ads are destroying my mobile data

For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads
AnarchyKitty · 24/05/2017 08:25

Same here Chasingsquirrels The amount of data I've used is incredible. 2GB in 20 days.
I like MN but not enough to have to top up halfway through my month.

GinGeum · 24/05/2017 08:26

I think the thing I find most annoying, is the moving adverts. It's just too busy. The Mumsnet Jobs one with the flashing low battery at the top is always coming up, and is very irritating. But I do also agree the vertical right hand ads and the middle-of-the-thread ads make me close the page. Am on iPhone 5s safari.

It used to be so much nicer when the banner at the top disappeared as you scrolled down.

LineysRun · 24/05/2017 08:31

Screen keeps freezing now. Only on MN. Kindle fine with other sites, e.g. Guardian.

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/05/2017 08:31

Ads in the middle of a thread - ruins mumsnet. And as a PP said it can be in the middle of a sensitive thread. So crass and inappropriate. Destroys trust.

It makes me feel that Mumsnet is a cheaper, shittier place.

Like someone's changed your favourite independent coffee shop where you and your mates meet into a gross impersonal fast food joint overnight.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 24/05/2017 08:32

Your new advertising format just passed tolerable.
I have switched my browser to Firefox and installed one of their many add on ad blockers.
So that's an own goal on your part as far as the ads go for me, because now I see none at all.

brexitstolemyfuture · 24/05/2017 08:33

Fucking ridiculous - this is a message board and users make the content. If you want to go to town on adverts do it on content you create.

You get £100000+ each from craft, lidl and others. The message board can easily be run with no or very little advertising. Buzzfeed uses the money from company's to have no banner adverts. It looks like you are being very greedy.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 24/05/2017 08:34

That explains my mobile data too.

HQ, do you see that it's not just a question of ads covering most of the screen (although that's annoying enough) but of finances? If it's costing us more to look at MN because of all the ads, you're going to lose people, and a lot of them will be the people who have been around for a long time, visit regularly and are already pissed off about the lack of action re user123 names and zombie threads.

PinkSquash · 24/05/2017 08:34

Far too much on my s7 screen (android, Chrome).

I will pay for ad free.

Ads on top and bottom.
Large moving ones.
The flashing low battery one .Aagh.
Stopped going on Mumsnet as often because of them

Cailleach · 24/05/2017 08:40

I've had to download Opera Mini as my browser recently - my data usage was becoming ridiculous, and as this is the main site I use in a day for browsing at work, I had a feeling I knew who the culprit was! Besides, the site was becoming so slow due to all the ads that I just couldn't use it.

My data usage is now one fifth of what it was last month!

Xmasbaby11 · 24/05/2017 08:41

Agree about annoying ads. They suddenly seem to have got worse.

Flashing battery
Adverts in the middle of a thread
Top of page
Side of page

I will look into ad blocking as others have suggested.

brexitstolemyfuture · 24/05/2017 08:46

Agree the moving ones are worst. Give me motion sickness and the top one keeps refreshing and getting a new advert!

I get that rates on message boards are low but ramming a shit load of adverts is short term thinking.
