For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads

HQ. Please. Make a decision about the ads. Either make them less intrusive or give us an option to pay a sub and get rid of them.

I'm on laptop, mobile on phone and sometimes Ipad. They make the site unusable and I'm going to be investigating an adblock today.

I am sure that is not what you want - I understand the need for ads to generate revenue, but when they are so intrusive that they interfere with the ability to use the site then you've gone a bit too far in the wrong direction.

Also, I wouldn't buy anything that is advertised like that, in an intrusive ad that pisses me off, because instead of thinking fluffy warm thoughts about the product being advertised, I'm thinking "FUCK THE FUCK OFF YOU ANNOYING TWAT" which I am sure is not the intention of the advertiser.

The verticals are back today and won't go! I keep forgetting to use the adblocker browser for MN.

Would be unethical to ask users for money seeing how much mn makes from their deals with other companies imo.

I think like a pp they maybe trying to sell the site...

olderthanyouthink · 25/05/2017 11:43

MN are risking:

• Potential users bouncing because the site is spammy, ugly and cluttered.

• Current users flouncing because of all the extra ads and the attitude of MNHQ.

• Decreased use of the site because of annoyance and data use.

• Increased use of AdBlock, which means they aren't getting ad revenue and not is any other site that the user used e.g. Little blogs.

You've got to wonder if it's worth it. There must be a point where are won't make anymore from plastering the pages with ads.

CarbonMint · 25/05/2017 11:50

Why should MN cost me money in data?
Please for the love of all that's made of chocolate, have a rethink.
Sad

Bearfrills · 25/05/2017 11:53

Further inappropriate advertising.

Threads about the terror attack on Manchester with an advert right in the centre of the thread inviting people to book tickets for various arena shows. Bit like selling Mother's Day cards outside an orphanage.

Downloaded Crystal.

Thanks whoever recommended it!

JustineMumsnet · 25/05/2017 14:07

Sorry about this everyone - I agree this isn't a good user experience - we're taking that extra ad out now and we are doing a wider review of ad placements and formats generally. There is a lot of pressure from advertisers to increase the view-ability of their ads but I think we need to make the implementation much, much better. Out of interest, are there any sites you use which has advertising but better implemented - I think the Guardian's quite a good model?

We're also keen to offer an ad-free, subscription version but that's a little way down the track.

OlennasWimple · 25/05/2017 14:24

JustineMN - Reddit has the same AdChoices thingies but they are confined to a side bar on the right hand side. I notice them (partly because I am intrigued by which bits of my browsing history make it into the ads) and they are easy to click on if it's something I am interested in, but they are very unobtrusive when reading threads

The Telegraph also works quite well, with links at the bottom of the page and occasional ads in the middle of a long article, though you sometimes have to look closely at which ones are ads and which are articles

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 25/05/2017 14:39

Thanks, Justine.

WomblingThree · 25/05/2017 14:40

Bearfrills that is truly disgusting. Obviously the advertising is picking up on words in the thread.

brexitstolemyfuture · 25/05/2017 16:00

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "a lot of pressure from advertisers to increase the view-ability of their ads"? There is an advert anchored at the top on mobiles so will have a very high viewability.

I don't think you can compare
Advertising on a message board to the guardian with an article that is written by a professional journalist that goes to a great deal of effort to research, interview, fact check and create a quality piece of work. Apples and pears.

Stormtreader · 25/05/2017 16:54

I'm pretty sure all advertisers would love all the pages to be 100% ads and nothing else, but if you dont start catering more to your actual users then there will be no-one left to advertise to!

If they dont like it then tell them to do one, the site is surely big and active enough that you are not struggling to find adverts.

AppleAndBlackberry · 25/05/2017 17:21

I don't mind the narrow horizontal bar at the top, except that sometimes I have a day when it continuously crashes/hangs my browser while loading adverts. Other people have also mentioned this in this thread so there's definitely a real issue going on here. I use the mobile site on an android phone with Chrome.

MamehaSan · 25/05/2017 19:49

The wrap-around ads (the ones that run up the sides and across the top) are incredibly slow to load and make the thread almost impossible to scroll through - there's another thread in Site Stuff about jerky threads. Tonight's Mitsubishi ad is particularly bad, and I've abondoned several threads as it's awful trying to scroll down.

It's getting to the point where I'm not going to use MN when I'm off wifi as my data usage is going through the roof. Also interested to hear that people are mentioning battery issues as well, I thought my tablet and (new) phone were knackered!

GinGeum · 25/05/2017 19:57

Considering I'm hardly ever out of wifi zone and only flick through Mumsnet when out using data, this should not be happening!

For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads
LineysRun · 25/05/2017 20:08

Jesus that's shit, Gin.

When you think we write all the most read content, too ...

MrsMozart · 25/05/2017 21:05

Can't read the site properly any more :(

There are so many adverts on every page, bar this one, that it's hard to see the threads and all the adverts are distracting and annoying. I most definitely won't buy any of them, even if I did by chance read a name.

MrsMozart · 25/05/2017 21:14

That's it.

No more coming on here on my laptop. Can't concentrate on anything. There's so much movement on the page my tired brain has had enough.

I'll be back on phone only for as long as it's usable.

olderthanyouthink · 25/05/2017 21:50

Linleys and to think it less people post MN will have less product to sell

HysterectomyHysteria · 26/05/2017 07:28

Is this the user experience that you are aiming for @justinemumsnet?
I for one am thoroughly fed up with the adverts.
It seems that you are now running the site for the benefit of the advertisers rather than the users.
Mumsnet is draining my battery and my data allowance for the benefit of whom? It's certainly not me!

For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads
SinisterBumFacedCat · 26/05/2017 08:50

Yes I had the same ad last night, except with a strip ad down the bottom too. Actual proper mumsnet, took up about 1 5th of the screen. Phone screens are already tiny and we don't all have laptops. It's like reading through a postbox.

AnarchyKitty · 26/05/2017 11:14

Wow. MN is super fast loading today. One extreme to the other!

CrackingTheWhip · 26/05/2017 15:30

I get the vertical ones whenever I go from a Facebook link if that helps. It drives me nuts. I don't want to have to close the link then open it up again. I want to read it the first time.

I don't buy that advertiser's are trying to force more adverts. I can imagine them trying to sell more and more intrusive advertising as it brings in more money but I highly doubt they are pressurising MN to use them. They say you can make a fuck load from these annoying adverts that start autoplaying videos and it is your choice to accept them or not.

Sounds very disingenuous, "oh we don't want to show more adverts but our advertisers are pressurising for more"

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 26/05/2017 17:50

Gurny toothbrush twat appeared just now but vanished as soon a second I refreshed, so that's good.

Witchend · 26/05/2017 23:38

Anyone else getting a "You need to update your Adobe Flash" randomly suddenly changing the page and not being able to get back to what you're half way through reading?
