Update to webchat guest colours

Hi,
This is a heads up that we're soon to introduce a change to the colours used to highlight posts on desktop and mobile.

If you've been around long enough to have the old style customised colours this won't affect you.

For newer users - we needed to add some new web chat guest colours and retire the awful mustard yellow we used in the past on desktop webchats. As a result of that we then needed to update our other colours too.

Thanks all

OK. Mobile site vs desktop site on the same phone looks like this. Please can we have desktop strength on mobile site?

Yes they were! The customised colours chosen for the desktop site also applied to the mobile site. Until today...

Pretty difficult to trust what MNHQ say about the functionality of the site when they don't know how their site works.

You might not have been able to set colours on mobile site, but if you set them on desktop site they carried over.

Otherwise why do you think we're complaining? Confused

Taylia · 11/10/2016 14:57

Just had a quick look on desktop site as the preferences seem to still be there.

My colours are as they're meant to be except they're completely different on the mobile site.

MNHQ I don't normally complain but I hate these new colours. They make reading the threads very difficult and the colour contrast is straining my eyes. Please can you do something about it. Or give us the customize option back. Or the old colour back. Personally I think you've broken something that didn't need fixing.

ThatIsNachoCheese · 11/10/2016 15:00

I had customised but my colours have changed too.

Undersmile · 11/10/2016 15:02

OPs have gone peach. I'm pink. I thought I was going mad and posted a thread .Sad

Undersmile · 11/10/2016 15:03

Ok- I'm pale yellow now.
FFS. I customised all this year's ago.

ageingrunner · 11/10/2016 15:03

I don't like the new colours either. They're very light. Why??

Beaverlac · 11/10/2016 15:04

Hate the new insipid colouring which makes it hard to distinguish OP posts etc.

PandaInTheMorning · 11/10/2016 15:08

The new colours are far too light. Hard to distinguish between posts.

Slave2thecat · 11/10/2016 15:09

I commented on the other thread - I only use MN on my phone - I thought I had customised my colours but obvs not. I'm finding the pale colours too pale - it's hard to scan threads. Please can the colours be darker?

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 11/10/2016 15:11

On desktop (on a mac, using latest version of Chrome) - I had MNHQ as blue, my replies were a lilacy colour, and OPs were quite a bright green. Now OPs are a pastel green, and my responses a pastel yellow. I've been here a year, I'm not sure if that counts as an older user or not (I'd imagine not).

I wouldn't have thought that using the pastel colours would be good for users with visual impairments - I don't care about the colours as such, but the lack of contrast between them and the normal white posts isn't great. Are there any plans to introduce a higher contrast version to change this?

The previous colour scheme was very clear, this seems like a backwards step for accessibility, which is a shame.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 11/10/2016 15:14

I'd customised and it's changed. I can't tell the difference between the op, myself and MN it's all just different shades of beige

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 11/10/2016 15:16

I don't care if colours are changed but they need to be brighter and different I used to have myself pink, op green and MN blue

AyeAmarok · 11/10/2016 15:17

I had customised (strong) colours on the mobile site, and now they've gone. It wasn't just on the desktop site.

I never use the desktop site. I think I last customised on mobile a year or two ago.

avocadosweet · 11/10/2016 15:18

I only use MN on my phone and I had custom colours too. Agree with everyone saying the current ones are too pale.

JosephineMaynard · 11/10/2016 15:18

The colours on the mobile site are far too pale (colours on desktop site don't seem to have changed).

It makes it very hard for me to easily differentiate between my posts, OPs posts, official MN posts.

The colours need to be bolder or its pointless having them at all.

OurBlanche · 11/10/2016 15:22

I only use laptop and PC, I was purple, OP was green. I lost the ability to customise colours a while ago, but the colours I had previously set remained.

Now, again NOT MOBILE, I have pale, eye strainingly pale, colours. But, as I have explained before, MN does not listen to/believe anyone who knows about colour contrasts and legibility. The background is still white and, even before this change gave far too strong a contrast against the text - something EVERY website designer, dyslexia specialist and teacher has known about for decades.

Now this, which just compounds the issue. Sorry MNHQ, this is very poor form. You do know better! You have been told by enough people, educators, designers, etc!

Queenbean · 11/10/2016 15:25

It's crap! Please change back!

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 15:25

Hello again,
When we updated the mobile site a couple of years ago the colours were set at a pale green colour for OP and a pink/purple colour for own posts. This was chosen because it was one of the most popular colour combinations of customised desktop colours. If you had happened to set your colours that way on desktop then it seems the same. But we've just checked again with Tech and they're sure that there was no customised colours on mobile. Could it be that some users had the green/purple-pink combo on desktop and saw that as similar on mobile?

As a separate issue we really do appreciate the feedback on paleness. We're going to make a small change to correct MNHQ on mobile and here's a couple of pics to illustrate what you should be seeing when we do.

Testing cos my customised colours have gone on the mobile site so trying out the desktop site.

ShelaghTurner · 11/10/2016 15:28

Desktop site is fine but I mostly use the mobile one.

Soubriquet · 11/10/2016 15:29

But I don't like the new version you are going to be showing us.

Fair enough you want to change the colours but can't you make them darker?!
