Update to webchat guest colours

Hi,
This is a heads up that we're soon to introduce a change to the colours used to highlight posts on desktop and mobile.

If you've been around long enough to have the old style customised colours this won't affect you.

For newer users - we needed to add some new web chat guest colours and retire the awful mustard yellow we used in the past on desktop webchats. As a result of that we then needed to update our other colours too.

Thanks all

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 12:23

@Aderyn2016

It's horrible. Please put it back!

Hi Aderyn2016,
Oh dear we're sorry you're not keen, we know any change can take some getting used to but is there any particular colour you felt strongly about?

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 12:25

@Theimpossiblegirl

Is that connected to the Unit Test post? I've been reporting them as spam. Thought we had a bot.

No that's unrelated and nothing to worry about, it was our mistake we were running some tests and they unfortunately got posted live. Sorry about that!

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 12:30

@AnchorDownDeepBreath

I had the old colours but mine have changed.

That horrendous greeny yellow is awful.

Thanks AnchorDownDeepBreath and we realise colours can be a very personal choice and we were keen to allow users who had already customised their colours to keep them.
We've flagged this to tech to look into.

We've had a couple of questions back from Tech.

Had you customised your colours previously? By which we mean gone into your customise area and chosen forest green or an alternative colour scheme? This was an old feature that we used to offer that some Mumsnetters who have been around a while still have.

Users that customised previously shouldn't be affected but newer users will see a change to a new set of colours.

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 12:58

Thanks MrsHathaway, strawberrypenguin and DesolateWaist - Tech are going to look at your accounts specifically to investigate. Not essential but can any of you recall what custom set you had previously?

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 14:40

Okay thanks all, looks like we've narrowed this down to mobile custom and that's where some confusion lies. Colours weren't customisable on mobile even for users who have been around long enough.

We appreciate the feedback on paleness - we do run accessibility checks for contrast and do sense checks across devices and screens but it's your feedback on readability that we rely on so your feedback is really useful.

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 14:40

@flanjabelle

I customised years ago and now I have shitty pastel colours that hurt my eyes. Angry

Can we check - is this on the desktop site?

JessicaMumsnet · 11/10/2016 15:25

Hello again,
When we updated the mobile site a couple of years ago the colours were set at a pale green colour for OP and a pink/purple colour for own posts. This was chosen because it was one of the most popular colour combinations of customised desktop colours. If you had happened to set your colours that way on desktop then it seems the same. But we've just checked again with Tech and they're sure that there was no customised colours on mobile. Could it be that some users had the green/purple-pink combo on desktop and saw that as similar on mobile?

As a separate issue we really do appreciate the feedback on paleness. We're going to make a small change to correct MNHQ on mobile and here's a couple of pics to illustrate what you should be seeing when we do.

Hello,
Thank you for telling us how you feel, we are listening and have received the message loud and clear re the changed colours being too pale. We'll take another look at darker shades.

KatherineMumsnet · 13/10/2016 11:51

Hi all,

Many apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

We have heard you loud and clear and we will be testing some darker colours, hopefully even as soon as today (though no promises). We will let you know once they are released, as we will need your feedback.

Thanks Flowers

KatherineMumsnet · 14/10/2016 16:41

Hi again, everyone.

The reason why we can't change some colours and not others is because tech would have to spend an awful lot of time maintaining different customisation for mobile, desktop and app. A huge chunk of tech resources would then have to go into checking it all, when they could be building and fixing elsewhere. In an ideal world, they'd all be the same but appreciate getting it right for all with a one-size-fits all is hard and this release ain't that.

That being said - we are going to switch to a darker set of colours (HOORAY). Before we finalise, we'd like to hear your feedback.

Please could you all click on this link, which will take you to a mock-up of the current pale colours next to a darker set. If you then click or tap the bit at the bottom which lists the colours, you can toggle between them.

Hope that makes sense, please do let us know what you think!

AmyGMumsnet · 19/10/2016 10:58

Good morning!

Thanks very much for all your feedback. Tech are working on changing to the stronger colours at the moment and we will post again as soon as the change is released.

Thanks all! Flowers

JessicaMumsnet · 25/10/2016 09:45

Good morning all, tech have just released the changes requested.

On mobile (and desktop if you haven't previously customised) you should now see;
The preferred darker set, green for OP and purple for own post.
We took note that folk preferred the purple of guest 4 for themselves so we swapped the proposed pink for own posts and purple for guest 4.

If that isn't the case for anyone please let us know and we'll flag to tech.
Flowers

JessicaMumsnet · 25/10/2016 10:02

@PumpkinOfLinus

I have a very dull beige for OPs. I hate it.

Would you mind letting us know what browser and device you're using please? Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 25/10/2016 11:02

@BoreOfWhabylon

Just been in to 'customise' - can still change the colours but although the names of the colours are still the same they now look completely different! eg silver looks salmon pink.

Thanks BoreOfWhabylon we've flagged that to tech and they going to get into now

JessicaMumsnet · 27/10/2016 11:08

Hello, tech have released a fix for those with customised colours - please do flag if you spot something amiss. Flowers

FlissMumsnet · 02/11/2016 16:08

Sorry to hear some of you are still having to peer at your screens to make out the paler colours Blush
We'll get tech to take another look
