"We don't think that this thread is disablist, it is a valid discussion that we don't think should be shut down. "

yet it has obviously been reported.
cause hurt and upset
how is that making life easier(or better) for the sn community`?

or this message from mn hq
That CBeebies is just far too PC
Thread deleted
Message from MNHQ: Thanks so much for all the reports about this.

Although there has been some interesting debate and discussion, we do agree that the OP and some of what ensues is disablist, so we have decided to delete.

how can these be interesting debates??
\not long ago mn hq said that they were going to be quicker dealing with this stuff
what happened??

I always apologise when I make a mistake, but on this occasion, as you are still defending the disablism on that thread, after days of derailing this one, I'll wait for your apology first.

Yours is long overdue.

Newes · 22/08/2016 21:26

No, I remember the post now and you don't need to prove anything to me anyway. I disagree with your opinion on the conduct of the teacher but the course of action suggested you were responding to was ridiculous.

I do think it's important to differentiate between insults and disablism.

Sixweekstowait · 22/08/2016 21:26

Silver, stop being so disingenuous. It's not teacher bashing to criticise her 'joke' and no one suggested she be sacked but some, me included, believed she should be held to account. It wouldn't be a sacking offence ffs but she certainly has done learning to do about appropriate professional behaviour on social media

TheSilverChair · 22/08/2016 21:27

It will be a cold day in hell before I apologise to someone who lied about me on a public forum and then refused to admit she was wrong and apologise.

And to say I derailed this thread is plain laughable.

You say you always apologise when you make a mistake, you haven't.

Just5minswithDacre · 22/08/2016 21:29

Who do you think derailed this thread then?

TheSilverChair · 23/08/2016 06:43

Still no apology? Even though you got it wrong and you always apologise when you do?

Some people thought she should be held to account. Some people thought she shouldn't. I get so sick of the teacher bashing on here and the demands for perfection that I lost my rag, so shoot me. Working in special ed is exhausting and it's something few teachers choose to do because of the stress. I had to retire early because of "burn out" that's not uncommon.

I still don't think the joke was disablist and neither do other people, including some with hearing difficulties.

On here MNHQ get to decide. I wasn't deleted, although I'm fairly sure some of you reported me. If you don't like the way MNHQ runs things you don't have to stay. I think they do really well to balance differing views. The fact that some feel there should be no view other than their own won't change that, thank goodness.

How can I apologise for how you made me feel, Ego? I felt bullied and intimidated not just by you. Unjust accusations are bullying. I was standing up myself as well.

well, it does seem a bit 'unfair' for someone who is not a member of that group to tell a member of that group that they are wrong.

I can see why you feel that way. Yet people were telling those with hearing difficulties that is was disablist, when they didn't think it was. That's not right, as you say.

Nitpicking and tedious is name calling

No it isn't. They are adjectives, not nouns. And even if I had used the noun form it would be a very sensitive individual who thought it was name calling. Feel free to report me to MNHQ. Or maybe you already have. If they think it's abusive I'm sure they'll delete it.

I did find you were being nit picking and tedious, Ego. I haven't told an untruth about you, though, if I had I would apologise. It's the right thing to do.

Apologies to Francis, I thought I had typed some people I should have done. And I do agree with the general thrust of your last post to be fair. An acknowledgement from both sides of the argument that the other has a right to their feelings is always a good thing.

Time and again I've seen people with differing views from others intimidated into silence on MN. This time I decided not to take it.

Do you reckon we'll get back to the subject at hand for the last 100 posts?

NeedACleverNN · 23/08/2016 09:21

Silver

I didn't find it offensive. And I say that as a severely deaf woman.

However, some people did and that's their right to.

So yes it is an offensive disabilist joke but like all jokes you can either take it as a joke or our you can take offence.

No one is wrong. Both opinions is right but just because you don't find it offence doesn't mean you can stand there and shout it was just a joke. Jeez lighten up

SpinnakerInTheEther · 23/08/2016 09:28

I've tried to think of jokes about other disabilities that might have the same reaction as the "pardon" crack to deaf people, but without success. Can anyone think of a joke about another disability that might be viewed as non-disablist?

The "Should've gone to Specsavers" adverts & any related repetition in RL?

Beyond I can see what you mean about the thread going off track. However discussing what should be considered disablist, and why, with relevant experiences, sort of is related to what sort of things MN should be deleting for being disablist, isn't it?

SoYouThink · 23/08/2016 09:29

^although the ads do not relate to actual disability per se.

BeyondLovesSweetDee · 23/08/2016 09:30

Yes spin. The back and for quote argument between silver and ego was maybe not so much

SpinnakerInTheEther · 23/08/2016 09:32

Sorry last comment by me. In the middle of name changing but did not want to 'sock puppet' on the threads I'm on. Duh! Back to the drawing board...

NeedAnotherGlass · 23/08/2016 10:12

I still don't think the joke was disablist and neither do other people, including some with hearing difficulties
Oh for heaven's sake this is not that hard to understand.
A few deaf people thinking that it is hilarious, do not matter more than the numerous people who describe how hurtful, isolating or offensive they find it. That is why it is disablist.
It causes harm - why would anyone choose to cause harm to another, possibly more vulnerable member of society, when it is just over a particularly lame joke?

How is it possible that some people are unable to get their head round this concept?

Samcro · 23/08/2016 10:16

BeyondLovesSweetDee

no it won't for some reason people can't start their own thread to joke around or row.
its a shame as this was an important subject and posters have left mn.
but wtf lets just let someone totally derail it, they they can report and it will be deleted.
makes me glad I am busy in rl as I now give up.
next time mn hq allow a disblist thread to stand I will ignore it.

The joking around was to distract from the bun fighting, because I personally think mnhq will quite happily delete this thread if it turns into a bun fight which it very nearly did the other night

It was Samcro.
