"We don't think that this thread is disablist, it is a valid discussion that we don't think should be shut down. "

yet it has obviously been reported.
cause hurt and upset

or this message from mn hq

Thread deleted
Message from MNHQ: Thanks so much for all the reports about this.

Although there has been some interesting debate and discussion, we do agree that the OP and some of what ensues is disablist, so we have decided to delete.

how can these be interesting debates??
\not long ago mn hq said that they were going to be quicker dealing with this stuff
what happened??

Never mind. I think I know which thread you mean now.

NeedAnotherGlass · 16/08/2016 23:48

Could we also have some clarification on the term "mild" disability, because that seems to be fair game. If the disability is only mild then it doesn't seem to count.

I'm afraid the reassurance is fairly meaningless after the thread today where it was clear that ASD is open for a level of debate that would never be acceptable for "real" disabilities.

tabulahrasa · 17/08/2016 00:17

"We'd just like to reassure everyone that our stance on disablist posts hasn't changed at all"

So your stance has always been that it's fine to write posts that imply that autism is a less valid diagnosis than other disabilities?

Queenbean · 17/08/2016 00:20

What happened? Which thread was this?

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 17/08/2016 00:30

On a slightly related note, why have all of Giraffe's post been withdrawn.

It wasn't anything to do with last nights thread was it? Sad

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 17/08/2016 00:30

That's NeedAScarfForMyGiraffe btw.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 17/08/2016 00:43

The playground thread that still stands had a poster who was wilfully obtuse about hidden disabilities. All their MN posts have been withdrawn ' at their request' while outraged responses have been removed for breaking talk guidelines.
What impression does that leave?
If you didn't see the 'withdrawn' posts it looks like an attack of rudeness by those defending their dc.
That in itself leaves a bad taste...

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 17/08/2016 00:48

What playground thread?

NeedAScarfForMyGiraffe is disabled btw if she's the one you're talking about.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 17/08/2016 00:51

I'm not talking about Need , dont worry :)

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 17/08/2016 00:51

Never mind, just found the thread you're talking about.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 17/08/2016 00:51

Oops, x posts Smile

I agree with Need and Ego 100%.

Talk of a 'mild disability' shows ignorance of ASD and minimises it.

And disablist threads are seen as fair game.

Seriously rethinking whether I want to be part of MN which is real shame after enjoying it for 9 years.

TheSilverChair · 17/08/2016 06:41

A lot of "ist" threads are left to stand. MN has a fine line to tread and maybe doesn't always get it right. I accept that they try but conversely stifling or closing down debate on any issue isn't always constructive.

When they get it wrong they are usually prepared to admit it.

Who gets to define 'wrong' ?

I guess MNHQ do. It's their site. For every member there may well be a different opinion. I've seen threads deleted that I thought should have been left and vice versa. If I don't like their moderation I can leave.

I do find MN one of the better forums I've been on. Some let the most horrendous stuff stand. At least MNHQ try to be fair and do listen to their members. If I thought they weren't trying I'd stop reading and posting.

Indeed. Plus the written word is open to interpretation by the reader. Some see "isms" where I don't. And, again, I see "isms" where MNHQ and others posters don't.

I've reported posts and threads that have been left and I haven't liked it but I suck it up because, overall, MN is one of the best forums there is.

I agree. But sometimes you can be "too involved" as you have found and you get upset. I avoid some topics because I know they are going to go a way that I will find upsetting and rational thought goes out of the window when I'm upset.

fgyw · 17/08/2016 07:39

Is mumsnet becoming less 'right on' for want of a better term? It would seem that way :( I used to feel that it was pretty progressive...

If you think dealing with a family with ASD is 'mild' you should come and bloody try it.

Total ignorance :(

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/08/2016 08:00

I wonder if MN want this disablist stuff to stand at momen so they can show the need for this campaign

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/08/2016 08:01

Fgyw yes it is.

Silver chair I am so sick of people saying it's wrong to stifle debate.

Debate is fine on a politics site or a discussion board but MN is meant to be a place where parents of all abilities

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/08/2016 08:02

Oops races and sexual orientations can feel welcome and supported.

Which they don't.
