We’d like your help testing a new release of the Mumsnet Talk App 3.0 (beta).

This app is for iPhones and iPads on iOS8 only at the moment.

We'd love it if you can give the app a good workout - using it as you normally do - to read and post in Talk. please do bear in mind that the app is still in beta version, so some things may not work perfectly. We have made a few changes since our last test release.

Sign up for Talk app testing here

You can use any email address to sign up.
You need to be logged in to sign up. (If you can't see the sign up page, make sure you are logged in.)
It is LIVE. Any posts you make will be seen on the Mumsnet site for all to see. We'll send you an invitation to download the app (it will arrive via the TestFlight service).

Talk app users

This app will replace the current Talk app (2.1) on your phone if you have it.

Recent beta Talk app testers (Testflight 1.0)

If you have been involved in recent app testing, you will end up with two app icons (1.0 & 3.0) on your device. You can uninstall the previous beta app (it will stop working this week).
If you previously signed up for this - but didn't accept & download the app - you will need to sign up again.

Please do give us your feedback on this thread.
Many thanks Flowers

Back!

Re earlier comments about wanting a night mode, I meant that I see the need for one beyond dimming brightness to minimum - even when I do that, in a really dark room the white screen is still too bright.

I also often use accessibility settings to invert colours - as a pp mentioned, it's great for creating a night mode in some apps - but the problem with the MN app is that its colour scheme alternates between light text / dark background and dark text / light background.

So use the app as normal and lists of threads and topics are fine, but posts are dazzling because of their white bg. Invert colours via accessibility settings and posts are now fine as they now have a black bg, but now thread and topic lists are dazzling. I can't win...

I know it's not urgent, but it really would make the app so much nicer to use. And there's at least two of us on this thread looking for it Grin

Roseformeplease · 12/09/2015 14:39

Just moved to the newest version and there seems to be a problem with logging in. I log in and then when I want threads I am on or similar, it asks me to log in again, so I do. It says thanks and then asks again....

RedYellaGreen · 12/09/2015 18:00

New app downloaded but every time I try to view threads I'm on, threads I'm watching or even reply, it asks me to log in. So I log in again, but it repeats the cycle.

Flingingmelon · 12/09/2015 18:00

I have the same problem as Rose ??

MagpieCursedTea · 12/09/2015 18:02

Just testing to see if the app is working for me...

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/09/2015 18:12

Hurrah! I've worked out the flipping now too thank you to whoever posted that.

petetech · 12/09/2015 18:27

Those of you experiencing log in problems, apologies, however you've helped find an important bug. Not great for you guys, admittedly, but good news for us as we can look into fixing it.

If you're experiencing this problem, please could you leave the app installed (please don't delete it) and we'll look into fixing the problem and releasing an update.

RedYellaGreen - when you were posting and it asked you to log in, did it post successfully after you'd entered your password? Or did it fail to post as well as forget that you were logged in?

Thanks all you testers for your help and feedback, very valuable to us indeed. Smile

RedYellaGreen · 12/09/2015 18:40

No it failed. It didn't even allow me to type it out, just the repeated login cycle.

ooerrmissus · 12/09/2015 18:41

Helllooooo!

Might be being a bit thick here but how do I watch a thread?

RedYellaGreen · 12/09/2015 18:41

Thanks for looking into it so quickly!

petetech · 12/09/2015 18:46

RedYellaGreen thanks a lot for the info. Might not have a fix for you today, but I'm looking into it.

Hufflepuffin · 12/09/2015 19:04

I would love love love it if the app came with a night mode for not dazzling the baby during middle of the night feeds! X

Hufflepuffin · 12/09/2015 19:19

Oh and it's very frustrating not to be able to share threads by text or email, so having a copy link option in the share menu would be amazing.

Simurgh · 12/09/2015 20:22

geekaMaxima

Have you tried inverting colours and dimming brightness? I know it's a bit of a palaver but pending any introduction of a Night Mode, it could well sort your troubles.

Simurgh · 12/09/2015 20:24

(I just did it myself as a test.)

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/09/2015 20:29

I would like to be able to see the last couple of posts of a thread in threads I'm on so I can easily see if it has had more posts since I last checked it without having to open the thread and either scroll to the bottom or flip! In fact having a setting which remembers which way you one your threads would be nice too. Otherwise though it is pretty slick if a little big on colour on the thread list screens.

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/09/2015 20:34

The pictures are great though. So much better than on the main site.ThanksBiscuitConfusedHmmSmileand the text and emotions are ace and so simple to use. WineCakeDragon

Simurgh · 12/09/2015 20:40

The colours are something I'd prefer a little different, I think. Two of the colours are very similar indeed and it would be good to have one much paler one or one of a slightly different hue. (Caveat - I don't know if this would cause technical or perception problems with the other and contrasting colours in the body of the App.)

Simurgh · 12/09/2015 20:41

The pictures are a real success aren't they?

Simurgh · 12/09/2015 20:48

Actually, there's one small thing I've just noticed about the pictures. (Came from the one you posted, IAmAPalaentologist.) My ipad is completely determined to present that picture in the way that it was originally posted so that if I turn the screen round, it flips the picture back to the horizontal - but only flips it at that point. There's no way on a ipad that I can quickly see the picture right way up.

(Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Maybe I'm using it wrongly.)

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/09/2015 20:50

Colours wise I'd like the option of having the theads I'm on and active etc as being white background like when you open a thread, I'm not keen on the big block of colour. But that's a fairly minor gripe. I can see how a muted night time version would be good although thankfully my night feeding days are over.

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/09/2015 20:51

I think that is just me being incompetent, I don't have many pictures on my iPad and those few I've loaded have all come out that way round and I've yet to figure out a way to rotate them. I sure if it were properly rotated before I posted it then it would have been the right way round.

geekaMaxima · 12/09/2015 21:01

Simurgh Yes, I've tried just about every combination of dimming, Inverted colours, and various app colour schemes. Still dazzled by some sections of the app!

I think if I was using it in dim light, I'd be fine. But using the app in a properly pitch-dark room (as I was again this evening), the brightness contrast between different sections of the app is just too much.

cozietoesie · 12/09/2015 21:29

I hardly like to mention Reduce White Point etc - I'm sure you'll have tried those additional options. I'd try them myself for people but I'm afraid that my eyesight just isn't that good and I couldn't rely on my own perception of the results. Another day perhaps when my eyes are less tired.

It certainly looks as if it might be a Techy button if many people are wanting a quick Night Mode switch. I wouldn't fancy doing the spec because there are so many different pairs of eyes and so many circumstances but you never know - Tech may have a spare couple of days some time. Grin

Blodss · 12/09/2015 22:17

Im having log in problems on the main site. When I log in it accepts as normal but then when I want to look at pm box it logs me out and I have to log in all over again.

Do you know how long we will have to wait for the android version as I can only access MN when home on the laptop at the moment.
