Messages all vanishing and now strange new 'report this post' boxes coming up.

Are you tinkering? Smile

OP posts:
Hallgerda · 21/04/2006 09:56

I don't like that "report this post" thing either, for the reasons others have given.

nutcracker · 21/04/2006 09:57

Not liking it here either.

spacedonkey · 21/04/2006 10:03

The ability to report a post to a moderator is standard on other forums - with a site that is as busy as mn it is simply too difficult for moderators to do their job effectively. However, I do think the link is huge and as a result somewhat hostile looking. A small warning triangle icon would be far less obtrusive.

SoupDragon · 21/04/2006 10:24

get a grip ffs. It'll take away the 100s of posts where people say "ooh, that should be deleted. Can't believe this thread is still here, someone should tell MN Towers about it..." Well, this feature lets you tell them! Stop whinging. It changes nothing.

cod · 21/04/2006 10:24

mners are conservative types

rememrbt he hoo ha over chat

CountessDracula · 21/04/2006 10:24

I think it is vile

What is wrong with sending an email with a link to the thread and saying "x's post of 12:41:03 is offensive" or something?

Could put something to that effect in that box to the right of this one, under the heading "Reporting an offensive post"

SoupDragon · 21/04/2006 10:24

Go on, report me Wink

hunkermunker · 21/04/2006 10:25

I don't mind it - anything that makes MN Towers' life easier (Towers's?!). But I don't like Outlook popping up because it makes my PC run really slowly.

charliecat · 21/04/2006 10:25

just another Click here to report this post would be fine...with the time and name in the title of the email.

SoupDragon · 21/04/2006 10:26

CD, becasue no one ever just does that! They bleat on about posts for ages.

Maybe the "report this post" could be changed to an icon to make it less obtrusive but I think the basic idea is fine.

spacedonkey · 21/04/2006 10:26

Do you remember the debate about mn going over to an off-the-peg bulletin board system? Perhaps the time is coming when that'll happen ...

SoupDragon · 21/04/2006 10:27

Agree about Outlook though. I do use it but not with the emil address I've registered on MN with.

cod · 21/04/2006 10:27

liek an angry face
ro an exclamation mark symbol

BagelBird · 21/04/2006 10:27

if it makes their lives easier and offensive posts/threads disappear faster then great. It does look a bit big but I think it is just that we are so used to the usual format that at the mo it sticks out like a sore thumb.
I bet we all don’t even notice it in a few days or so. Not worth getting upset about a particular font size IMHO :)

SoupDragon · 21/04/2006 10:29

Maybe they could change it to a ticker style (X minutes till this post is reported/deleted)? Or a moving icon? A little yellow face jumping up and down in anger/frustration maybe? An avatar with "this poster has had X posts removed"?

nailpolish · 21/04/2006 10:31

i odnt use outlook either

please change it mn towers Sad

hunkermunker · 21/04/2006 10:32

\link{http://www.reaper.co.uk/images/parp.gif\Parp!}

nailpolish · 21/04/2006 10:32

what i mean is change it to something more discreet, not a click away on every post

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2006 10:34

Hey everyone,

We completely understand your concerns but do bear in mind that just because a post is reported it doesn't mean it breaks our forum rules and we'll do anything about it. It is however, very helpful to us to receive an exact url when people feel there's a problem. Often a member writes in and wants us to delete something urgently (usually something they've written in error) and will say for example "it's in Chat - the thread about my husband" which can take a long time to locate! It's so much quicker and easier for us to have the url to hand and on the odd occassion where there is a troublemaker on the loose then we'll know very quickly.

We're not trying to encourage folks to "sneak" on eachother - more trying to make the system we use now - ie self-policing - work better and more efficiently. Maybe there's better language we could use though instead of "report this post" - something that sounds less officious - any ideas?

Greensleeves · 21/04/2006 10:35

A little icon of a tower would be nice Grin

nailpolish · 21/04/2006 10:35

i can see what you mean justine

put a pic of a headmaster

or a hooter

hunkermunker · 21/04/2006 10:35

Parp?

Justine...I want to report your post... I'm SUCH a child! Blush

hunkermunker · 21/04/2006 10:36

Can it say "OMG, I can't BELIEVE they/I said that!"

(Is this the forerunner to an edit feature, btw - not sure how I feel about that...!)

CountessDracula · 21/04/2006 10:37

a red warning triangle or some kind of icon would be better, if you hovered over it it could then say "report this post"

or just the word report in small letters would be an improvement

hunkermunker · 21/04/2006 10:37

Click here to squeak on your fellow MNers, you big louse!
