Cup of tea anyone?

RebeccaMumsnet · 09/02/2011 11:21

Last week we offered you the Wine emoticon but after cries for further beverages in the form of a nice cuppa tea, we are putting it to the vote. Please note that although we are using the word 'tea' the emoticon can be used as any hot beverage of your choosing (attempt to fend off enraged coffee/ Horlicks/ hot chocolate or Bovril drinks).

Please vote here . Voting closes at midnight on 10 Feb

p.s. Here endeth the beverage emoticons

I like the idea of 'in joke' smileys. IsBear still around? I think we should only list the main ones down the side, but have monthly stealth ones (that stay though) Grin

Blatherskite · 10/02/2011 10:20

Just have the main ones listed down the side, then have another tab next to "Acronyms" with the in-joke emoticons in.

It could go...

Bear [ bear] - link to Pom Bear thread
Biscuit [ biscuit] - link to GB thread
etc

At least that way newbies would be able to catch up if they wanted and the list next to the text box wouldn't get huge

Jux · 10/02/2011 11:04

There's room for 3 columns next to my message box now. You can have Emphasis and Links right next to the box, Smileys in the middle, and the right-most column could be Sillies.

Can I add a plea for those of us who aren't very visual and have to study each little yellow blob carefully to work out what it is?

I admit, I'm one of those folk who bleat "Why can't they put the words for what it does on the button/knob instead of some cryptic little picture taht I can't understand?"

Me, I like words, you know where you are with them...

Housemum · 10/02/2011 11:11

We have enough emoticons - totally agree with those above, that it's more MN to have a nod to an emoticons that doesn't exist, eg "couldn't believe she did that [cats bum face emoticon]".

Novelty ones fine if inspired by current threads and don't outstat their welcome. Love the seasonal ones.

I use other forums (fora?) for craft/pets and there are dozens of stupid faces to scroll past before getting to the "post comment" option.

Just promise you will never have moving emoticons or stupid sign offs (eg housemum, mum to 3 ickle sweethearts, mwah mwah mwah :) :) :) )

SlightlyJaded · 10/02/2011 14:17

Surely a cats bum mouth is more urgent?

So, you'll post something like "I've had a bad day, think I'll have Wine"?

What's the point of that? It's the sort of thing my 6 year old would do. It's not providing a commentary on what you've posted, it's not making a joke. It's just stupid.

Mumsnet, I say this in all seriousness, these crappy emoticons are beneath you.

[thinking about this too much]

MaryBS · 11/02/2011 13:42

you're not forced to use them squeaver.

squeaver · 11/02/2011 14:01

I know, I know and I know I'm taking this far too seriously, but I'll have to look at them and read them. And maybe posters I like and respect will use them and then I'll think a bit less of them. And Mumsnet is about the WIT. And the WORDS. And the CLEVERNESS. It's not about sticking little pictures all over the place like a CBeebies comic.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 11/02/2011 14:10

Tis a very pretty CUP but I wish it was a mug - am feeling excluded as only really drink hot chocolate and wouldn't put that in a cup and saucer; nor would I brew it.

But hey - you can't please all of the people all of the time. So I'll have a Wine instead.

HelenMumsnet · 12/02/2011 16:41

Sorry, squeaver. You don't have to use it you know.

You can be

Eleison · 12/02/2011 16:47

Perhaps you could set this emoticon up for squeaver and her faction?

HelenMumsnet · 12/02/2011 18:05

lol

SoupDragon · 12/02/2011 18:13

[mug]

squeaver · 12/02/2011 18:53

I am inordinately cheered by the thought of having my own "faction". Way cooler than a quiche.

[sigh]

Blatherskite · 12/02/2011 19:33

I'll be in your faction squeaver.

Screw the brew!
