Cup of tea anyone?

RebeccaMumsnet · 09/02/2011 11:21

Last week we offered you the Wine emoticon but after cries for further beverages in the form of a nice cuppa tea, we are putting it to the vote. Please note that although we are using the word 'tea' the emoticon can be used as any hot beverage of your choosing (attempt to fend off enraged coffee/ Horlicks/ hot chocolate or Bovril drinks).

Please vote here . Voting closes at midnight on 10 Feb

p.s. Here endeth the beverage emoticons

A no from me until you ditch some of the crap ones.

I don't like Wink much, and Bear has had its day (although I kind of like the notion of there being a stealth emoticon that isn't on the list).

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/02/2011 14:50

I agree that the [cup] is more universal and politic.

And will be warmly embraced by the [moon] crew.

Smile
Jux · 09/02/2011 15:04

I think it should be a builder's mug.

Preferably green.

JulesJules · 09/02/2011 15:07

yeah

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/02/2011 15:12

maryz I'll support your [snigger] if you promote my [splurt].

Deal?

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 15:23

If we get the [tea] then we really need a Chocolate one.

Preferably [Swisschocolate]

I would suggest [Lindt] but the Nestle haters would have my [head]

Sanesometimes1 · 09/02/2011 15:23

have voted a yet, but very seldom use the emoticons anyway - it's just a bit of fun folks - lighten up !

Sanesometimes1 · 09/02/2011 15:24

i've voted... glad to see yes is winning Grin

LibraPoppyGirl · 09/02/2011 15:35

I love a a good cuppa and I can see nothing wrong with emoticons - as other posters have said, sometimes it helps to keep the lighthearted tone.

If you don't like them then don't use them. I think they're fun in an all too, sometimes, serious world Wink

SummerRain · 09/02/2011 15:39

And can i just point out... my Open University forums have twice as many emoticons as MN and use [gasp] avatars and I have yet to see anyone complain about 'dumbing down' or any such nonsense.

It's easier and more expressive to use an emoticon in many situations and it saves time too.... which when i'm snatching 5 mins here and there to MN is important to me.

@SummerRain I'm in total agreement with your opinion on the ease of emoticons when you're snatching 5 mins here and there on MN.

I think the idea that OU forums are using emoticons is pretty cool too Wink (just don't tell my 13yo I used the word 'cool' Blush)

SoupDragon · 09/02/2011 15:56

See, I think [snigger] conveys snigger better than a picture. I am also partial to [innocent] and [hopeful]. And [cackle].

Word are better than a picture IMO.

If the beverage is to be anonymous, it needs to be [mug] as the only thing you have in a cup is tea.

watfordmummy · 09/02/2011 15:58

I'd vote for that! only because I've just made one Grin

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2011 15:59

Oh I'm fond of them little emoticons. And no, they aren't dumbing down the site. Not the emoticons.

PrettyCandles · 09/02/2011 15:59

I like the simple face emoticons we've got, a few more would be fine.

I like the stylistic variety you get when posters use things like [boak] or [wince]. A post full of emoticons is difficult to read.

I do not like loads of ever-changing emoticons. It makes MN exclusive and cliquey, instead of inclusive and welcoming.

Emoticons should be clear and instantly understood. Not like that irritating bear one was - what was that about? I'm hardly a newcomer to MN, but I found the bear incomprehensible and off-puting.

So an Emoticon Of The Month definitely gets the thumbs-down from me.

I never understood the bear and I had read the original thread. Biscuit I quite like as I know the reason behind it and it is part of Mumsnet history.

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 16:02

I agree with Soupy. I use more than Confused - mainly cause the are easier to type than

You can still do [sarcastic] or [bemused] - which is better than Confused which can be misunderstood.

NormanTheForeman · 09/02/2011 16:04

I'm quite happy for it to be a mug - after all, you generally get more ina mug than a cup! Grin

SoupDragon · 09/02/2011 16:05

Oooh - if it's [mug] then you can use it when you think people are being taken for a ride.
