Cup of tea anyone?

RebeccaMumsnet · 09/02/2011 11:21

Last week we offered you the Wine emoticon but after cries for further beverages in the form of a nice cuppa tea, we are putting it to the vote. Please note that although we are using the word 'tea' the emoticon can be used as any hot beverage of your choosing (attempt to fend off enraged coffee/ Horlicks/ hot chocolate or Bovril drinks).

Please vote here . Voting closes at midnight on 10 Feb

p.s. Here endeth the beverage emoticons

noooooh! Too many emoticons - it will be glitterey text next! I think you should remove an emoticon for every one you introduce...

DillyDaydreaming · 09/02/2011 11:28

... and so far the [tea] people are in the running... WineWine

piratecat · 09/02/2011 11:29

whats the cup of tea for. is a a soothing emoticon? or a 'i need a break' (have a cuppa tea)style emoticon.

NormanTheForeman · 09/02/2011 11:34

Have voted! Bet nobody can guess which way I voted though.... Grin

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 12:08

Can we have an [i am not really bovvered] emoticon and voting option.

Will this be the end to the emoticons or are we soon to have [nutellasandwich] [benandjerrys] and [macandcheese] ones.

Could be good ad income for MN that.

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/02/2011 12:13

Have voted yes to the tea even though I can't stand the stuff!

Would prefer to see an 'emoticon of the month', inspired by a popular current thread like the Pombear was.

And judgey pants, obviously.

Indith · 09/02/2011 12:14

But there are too many emotions as it is! I hate that they don't all fit neatly by the side of the typing box, you have to scroll down to see them all. No wonder we get lots of people who say they don't know how to do links because that info is tucked away at teh bottom and who ever scrolls down that far past the box?

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/02/2011 12:16

Do I get the cuppa tea emoticon in my nametag heading thingy whenever I post? That would make me happy!!!!

NormanTheForeman · 09/02/2011 12:16

The cuppa emoticon would be very useful for when someone is having a rough time and you want to offer them sympathy or support, but it is too early in the day for a Wine, or they don't drink alcohol. It's flexible, because it can contain any beverage (not just tea/coffee)

TotorosOcarina · 09/02/2011 12:16

Have voted yes as I don't drink so will never get to use the wine but love a good cuppa!

Viva la tea cup!!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 09/02/2011 12:17

It's the beginning of the end, I tell you Grin

yy indith - link instructions should be above the emoticon list.

or perhaps above the text box there could be the row of emoticons which you could click on, and they would just import (or whatever you call it) into the text.

Or perhaps you could STOP PISSING ABOUT WITH WINE AND TEA AND GIVE ME RUDDY [BOGGLE]

Grin
CuppaTeaJanice · 09/02/2011 12:20

I agree the smiley list could be improved. It doesn't need 'For a sceptical face, Hmm type [ hmm]' it just needs

Hmm [hmm ] - sceptical
Confused [confused ] - confused
Blush [blush ] - embarrassed etc.. (only without the extra spaces obv.

Then you could fit loads more in without taking up too much room.

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 12:20

No, nothing else above the text box. I don't like clutter.

I rarely use emoticons and don't want to see them nodding away at me all the time.

I like the fact that some poster use [boggle], some use [boak]. It is more diverse and amusing than a page full of smiley faces.

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/02/2011 12:22

Norman, sometimes the Wine contains Schloer, or blackcurrant Fruit Shoot!!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 09/02/2011 12:23

I think the thing about the emoticons is that they do help to convey tone and meaning.

It is very easy for a joke to come across as an attack. If you have the annoying little pictures, it goes with the text and makes meaning clear.

Thanks Grin
Thanks Sad
Thanks Hmm
Thanks Smile
Thanks Confused

See?

TragicallyHip · 09/02/2011 12:28

I don't think there can be too many emoticon's!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/02/2011 12:30

I'm concerned this site is getting too frivolous.

Although I quite like a 'splurt' smiley but can't imagine quite how that would be emoticonised.

[wunk]

HecateQueenOfWitches · 09/02/2011 12:37

What the hell kind of threads are you posting on that you need a splurt emoticon? Shock

TragicallyHip · 09/02/2011 12:38

Maybe ChaosTrulyReigns has got confused with a different website/forum Wink

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/02/2011 12:38

I bet it's those friday night threads!! Grin

AboardtheAxiom · 09/02/2011 12:51

I think you are on the verge of a slippery slope with these, and just to be clear - there are tickers at the end of the slippery slope.

I mean what's wrong with just writing 'tea' or 'wine'? Do we really need a fussy prety little picture to demonstrate instead of looking at an actual word.

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2011 12:52

I have voted.
I also would like to have a Daily Mail Emoticon.

HattiFattner · 09/02/2011 13:00

what about us coffee drinkers huh? We are being marginalised, I tell you.... Wink

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 13:01

Just a thought.

It is slightly suspicious that the Wine emoticon appeared right before the MN Wine Club was announced.

Does this mean that we shall shortly be entering into a cooperation with McVities? And if so, please tell me that they will send overseas.

PaisleyLeaf · 09/02/2011 13:01

Just the faces is fine for me.
But I expect to be outnumbered.
