Cup of tea anyone?

RebeccaMumsnet · 09/02/2011 11:21

Last week we offered you the Wine emoticon but after cries for further beverages in the form of a nice cuppa tea, we are putting it to the vote. Please note that although we are using the word 'tea' the emoticon can be used as any hot beverage of your choosing (attempt to fend off enraged coffee/ Horlicks/ hot chocolate or Bovril drinks).

Please vote here . Voting closes at midnight on 10 Feb

p.s. Here endeth the beverage emoticons

It's gone a bit MSN. Hmm

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 13:08

Looking bad for the naysayers at the moment.

candleshoe · 09/02/2011 13:10

McVities eh? Just thinking of having a tattoo done of their logo!!www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1146198-What-Brand-Name-would-you-have-tattooed-on-you

PaperView · 09/02/2011 13:16

Why are we voting for a cuppa when that crappy bear just appeared and the wine club inspired the wine glass one?

Can we have 2 lots of smilies...the emoticons - the ones we have plus a :P

and an opt in to "fun" ones like that crappy bear, biscuit, and wineglass.

HouseOfBamboo · 09/02/2011 13:21

I like emoticons, the more the better. If you don't like them and don't use them then you won't be ferreting down the list anyway, so having more options shouldn't get on your nerves.

Just make sure they don't start scurrying about (or actually spurting). That WOULD be annoying.

TotorosOcarina · 09/02/2011 13:23

For those who are saying its a slippery slope etc... I don't get that, this is a chat forum, a place I think most of us visit to relax and crack a smile. Its not some professional website where we all have to be guarded in what we say or do, it supposed to be a relaxed place and the smilies add to that!

PaperView · 09/02/2011 13:23

but i will still see them.

it is one step closer to tickers.

If you want to give someone a metaphorical drink then say so.

Many have bemoaned the "dumbing down" of MN and to give people pictures to use instead of words just goes to help the theory

TotorosOcarina · 09/02/2011 13:27

Log off then, find a site without them, somewhere more serious.

Nyx · 09/02/2011 13:36

I like the MN emoticons. They're compact and bijou. They're not anywhere near sparkly/distracting and MN would NEVER have tickers. I've voted yes, a wee cuppa tea emoticon would be excellent.

LadyPumpington · 09/02/2011 13:40

Have voted. I agree it is a slippery slope but we can't do without a teacup. I love the sceptical smiley it's so cute(did I just say that?)

AtYourCervix · 09/02/2011 13:44

having been given my Wine i feel i should support [tea]

but i think the Biscuit Bear and Wink are surplus to requiremets.

NormanTheForeman · 09/02/2011 13:47

I think it should be [cup] rather than [tea]. More inclusive, we wouldn't want to exclude coffee/hot chocolate/Horlicks/cocoa/Bovril drinkers etc. And I say this as a confirmed tea-drinker myself.

SoupDragon · 09/02/2011 13:48

"Log off then, find a site without them, somewhere more serious"

Alternatively, if you want more emoticons, go and find a site that has them. Personally, I find the made up emotions more eloquent [shrug]

I am only repared to vote for a cuppa if it is on a one-in-one-out basis. Tea comes in and the bear gets it.

LadyPumpington · 09/02/2011 13:51

For those of you who are still Hmm about the need for another beverage emoticon, it doesn't just have to mean a drink of something it could also represent 'this is mad' as in mad hatters tea party, I personally can't wait to use it around the full moon.

PaisleyLeaf · 09/02/2011 13:55

Oh well, if you put it that way.......

Flisspaps · 09/02/2011 13:59

Yes. But then I think no more emoticons.

Dunoon · 09/02/2011 14:02

Ok I voted yes but think it should be [cup] and not [tea] too. And a nice china cup please.

Dunoon · 09/02/2011 14:02

Ooh we will be able to have cups of tea and a jammy dodger.

Dunoon · 09/02/2011 14:03

Has Bear gone then?

Ah obviously not.

solo · 09/02/2011 14:03

I have voted no. I have voted no because it would have to be decaffeinated for me and I don't think that it would be. So there! [pokes tongue out] Grin

Francagoestohollywood · 09/02/2011 14:10

Oh come on Atyourcervix, how can you resist the cuteness of Wink...? Grin

stealthsquiggle · 09/02/2011 14:29

"Tea comes in and the bear gets it"

I have already voted yes (and yes it does need to be [cup] rather than [tea] for avoidance of rows inclusiveness - but I think SoupDragon has a point - there was no vote for that bear, and it is really surplus to requirements - what is it supposed to convey?

ScaredOfCows · 09/02/2011 14:33

No, too many already. Don't like the biscuit, the bear (although I can't see it now), or the wine glass, and I won't like the cup of tea.

squeaver · 09/02/2011 14:37

No No No.

One of the great JOYS of MN is the self-created emoticons such as [boak] and [splurt].

I know I'm being too literal but the orginal ones like wink and smile and sad do work the way Hecate describes and that's fine.

What do these bear and wine glass and cup ones actually DO?? I really don't get it.
