October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

Closing the bars and restaurants was never going to reduce infections as by her own admission they could not prove that a single case case from them.

Personally I would look at reintroducing shielding on a voluntary and funded basis. This would protect the people at risk and hopefully reduce hospital admissions.

It seems like madness to me that people who are extremely vulnerable are being expected to attend work and school.

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 19:04

I think she’ll shut everything again.

I really hate the threats and ‘further measures may be required’ nonsense she keeps coming out with. I get that she wants everyone hanging off her every word but businesses can not operate it the ire constantly worried she’s going to close them.

We’ve had much longer under the first lockdown than the rest of the U.K. and now we’ve had weeks of draconian restrictions (supposedly to continue for the foreseeable future).

Why is the track and trace system not succeeding in managing outbreaks? I suspect the fact that we still have less than 1000 of the 2000 contact tracers Sturgeon promised months ago has a lot to do with it.

PomPomWrong · 20/10/2020 19:17

I served a couple from Scotland yesterday, said they had been on their way to Blackpool, and were "turned back".

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 19:20

@BlueThursday brilliant 😂😂

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 19:21

@Ecosse I think it’s the dark hints and threats that get to me

Scotslassie1 · 20/10/2020 19:37

Hmm, Scotland 's test and trace is working well. Serco's isn't unfortunately- not reaching nearly 40 per cent contacts

Look at Wales, NI and Ireland- all in much more severe lockdowns.

Ecosse · 20/10/2020 19:48

@Scotslassie1

Test and trace isn’t working well at all in Scotland. The number of contacts not spoken to within 72 hours has been increasing every week.

RaraRachael · 20/10/2020 19:51

I wonder what her next move will be - probably something stricter than Wales, NI and Ireland or a combination of all 3. As far as I'm aware, none of her "We must do this as this is the only way to cut rates of infection" restrictions have worked so far.

Heaven help us all Sad

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 19:52

Test and trace is shite.

There’s no evidence for closing hospitality or gym classes. No evidence is presented. No goal is set out. Governments are doing a proper crap job of dealing with this and I’m sick of being treated as a naughty child. The populace has been massively obedient.

NotAnActualSheep · 20/10/2020 19:59

Nice to see lovely cuddly "adult conversation" Sturgeon admitting that she wouldn't fall into the trap of that liberal softie BJ by trying to reach consensus with areas before forcing them into lockdown. She'd just force them into it straight away if they don't agree. Government by consensus - we've heard of it.

titsbumfannythelot · 20/10/2020 20:01

I think you're right @RaraRachael I bet she was raging with Mark Drakeford for out lockdowning her

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 20/10/2020 20:07

It’s so over the top. We have had 1-4 cases in our town in the past week, according to the Scottish government dashboard. Because it’s a small population that puts as at >100 cases per 100000 people, when potentially there was 1 case?! We are being manipulated here. Is this really worth the daily threats? I’m not doing it any more.

rookiemere · 20/10/2020 20:11

@PomPomWrong when you said a couple were turned back from Blackpool what do you mean ? Were they stopped somewhere?

Scotslassie1 · 20/10/2020 20:23

Notanactualsheep - The mayor of Manchester was livid when he learned (via text and whilst he was doing a live press conference) that BJ had forced his city into lockdown. 'Diabolical way to run a country.' Not my words!

The FM was branded 'racist' on here when she couldn't rule out imposing fines on people coming to Scotland from higher Covid areas, for non essential travel. Are the Welsh Gov racist also?

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 20:43

Wales and Scotland can’t impose border controls as there are only uk borders

Scotslassie1 · 20/10/2020 20:51

Perhaps you go to the same school of deliberate misunderstanding as Douglas Ross? No one's talking about closing a border just restricting non essential travel. Quite straightforward.

NotAnActualSheep · 20/10/2020 21:10

... BJ had forced his city into lockdown. 'Diabolical way to run a country.'
Precisely my point. That is what NS intends to do if council leaders don't agree with her about any proposed restrictions or the level of support to be provided. They will "consult and be as collaborative as possible", but would ultimately make the decisions. It is indeed diabolical.

I may misunderstand your point re Wales. They are going into a full lockdown and anyone disobeying the rule to "stay at home" will be fined, regardless of where they are from. If Scotland does that, it is within their right, as it was in the first lockdown (fines for non essential travel etc). Wales aren't proposing fines only for visitors from tier 3 areas or central Scotland as far as I know. I'm not sure that would be allowed. They can request people from certain areas avoid travel to their area (as NS did in March, and people from Devon/Cornwall did) or that people from their area avoid travel to hotspots (Blackpool...), but no more. Its not illegal for people from tier 3/ Central Scotland to be outside their area (BJ and NS have decided not to make it so) but it would be illegal for them (or anyone from tier 1 or 2) to be in Wales without reasonable excuse. Just as its illegal for Welsh people to be away from their homes etc. They aren't fined for being "English" but for travelling in a restricted area. It would be tricky to do anyway along the border, as you can enter and leave Wales loads of times perfectly legally along the roads, in a way you can't really in Scotland.

Ecosse · 20/10/2020 21:22

I suspect Sturgeon’s version of ‘collaboration’ with councils will be very solar to her collaboration with her cabinet.

It will be a case of ‘this is what’s happening, like it or lump it’.

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 21:30

@Scotslassie1 I have not misunderstood. Neuter the Scottish nor Welsh governments can close borders. They can make laws that their citizens stay home.

What the SG is doing in imposing restrictions is just as diabolical as the WM government’s position

PomPomWrong · 21/10/2020 05:57
@PomPomWrong when you said a couple were turned back from Blackpool what do you mean ? Were they stopped somewhere?
I don't actually know. It was whispered to me in very hushed, embarrassed tones.. And they were from much further up North than my current location, and bought very, very little, so I am inclined to believe that yes, indeed, someone stopped them and made them turn back. Too long a trip for too little otherwise.

Scotslassie1 · 21/10/2020 06:58

Would be Good - Apologies, that was a bit snarkey of me last night.. it was a long day!

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 08:25

So, I read we can expect FIVE tears tiers.
I don't even know what I can or cannot do now, can you imagine with door to door variable restrictions?
Anyway, coffee shops are booming in my area. I have walked past three different ones and they were full, as in they couldn't have been any fuller (Covid or no covid).

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/10/2020 08:41

I guess I was right with at least 4 then. Although one of them is technically tier zero, doubt that will be used in my lifetime.
