October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

@Scotslassie1 no worries- I think we’re all getting fed up of everything just now!

I like this thread as it’s a good place to see what’s happening in Scotland and what people think. I’m a bit isolated so out of the loop.

NotAnActualSheep · 21/10/2020 08:50

Five?! We don't stand a chance keeping up with this, do we?! And I bet none of them is "low risk, get back to normal folks, hug anyone willing to accept a hug but don't start licking bus stops just yet".

I can totally believe the coffee shop thing. Its obvious that if you restrict the number of places people can go inside for a nice-cup-of- tea-and-a-sit-down, those that offer that service will be rammed. I can't see how it's more risky to allow more places to open, to let people be more spread out (not to mention allowing the owners, staff and suppliers to stand a chance of getting some income). Or how getting a cup of coffee and a toastie in a "cafe" is different to getting an espresso and a panini in a "restaurant" . One allowed in the central belt, one not...

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 21/10/2020 09:42

I’ve always thought this @NotAnActualSheep. All these rules force people to act in a way they wouldn’t normally that is probably not as safe. Forcing hospitality to shut at 10pm forces everybody to leave at the same time. Shutting all restaurants and not allowing people to meet in their homes forces everyone into tiny cafes. There just needs to be a broad set of rules, to keep those who need to be kept safe. It’s getting more and more draconian and people are really giving up. The fact Boris has imposed restrictions on Manchester, Nicola’s saying she will just impose the rules and not bother letting councils have a say, it’s awful. We’re never getting our freedom back at this rate, and like I said in an earlier case our town had 1 case in the past week!!! I categorically do not trust the government(s) now. The “circuit break” is being extended as we all predicted. And they wonder why we don’t trust them?! They’ve pushed the self destruct button, I dread to think what’s coming.

throwingawaymyshot · 21/10/2020 09:56

where does it say 5?

anon444877 · 21/10/2020 10:00

We're getting to the point of mass civil disobedience with all these complex rules and the various political stand offs. As we said earlier, a lot of folk are going to start investigating the fines as the rules are so hard to keep straight.

I do feel so sorry for the people whose work has been forcibly closed or is effectively near closed like tourism - I was against extending furlough when the message was that we are back to business as usual but we seem to be in a different phase now.

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 10:24

@throwingawaymyshot, Front Page of the Telegraph.
Also Daily express and Sun say that current restrictions will be extended - at least - till Nov 2nd (surprises surprise).

throwingawaymyshot · 21/10/2020 10:27

fuck her! I have my 40th long weekend that weekend. I've already had to cancel my holiday abroad for my original 40th birthday present now I may have to cancel my bloody within Scotland holiday too! Am i not getting a birthday then?

throwingawaymyshot · 21/10/2020 10:38

all this fucking will she, won't she. We can't plan anything!

theotherfossilsister · 21/10/2020 11:49

@anon444877 are you in Edinburgh by any chance? Pool and libraries reopened here and it's great. I hope they won't take those away. (and I work in one of them so have seen what it means to people.)

anon444877 · 21/10/2020 11:54

I hope they don't close again too - it's just the timing of it, they were closed for so long and they've reopened at the start of the second wave.

theotherfossilsister · 21/10/2020 11:58

I know, but I just see how much they mean to people. I genuinely believe that they're essential, although lots of people will disagree.

Does anyone know what time today's announcement is please?

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 11:59

@theotherfossilsister,
It depends on the LA.
In Falkirk only one LA pool and 2 gyms reopened mid September (Bannatyne's has been open since Aug 30th...).
Libraries have been "open" for a while, but only for click and collect and no interchange of books between branches.

Ecosse · 21/10/2020 12:03

The other thing with Sturgeon is that she (deliberately?) doesn’t give new measures a chance to work before she piles on more restrictions.

So we had the reduction in numbers allowed to meet indoors and outdoors, then the total ban on meeting indoors and now the hospitality shutdown all straight after each other.

So we have no idea which settings were actually causing the rise in cases and whether the restrictions actually work.

The home visits ban was imposed on Glasgow and Lanarkshire 8 weeks ago yet the vast majority of cases are still in these areas. So it doesn’t appear to be working.

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 12:07

Not to mention that schools have been off for 10 days now and when they reopen I would expect another rise (not because of the schools per se, but because adults just mingle more)

BlueThursday · 21/10/2020 12:15

There’s already huge apathy with it all. More and more people are going to start ignoring the rules because
a) they constantly change and unless you’re glued to your phone or tv You can’t keep up
b) nothing seems to be stemming the spread so might as well just do what we want
c) it’s winter, we’re Scottish and we are miserable at the best of times never mind adding this to our woes

Scotslassie1 · 21/10/2020 12:23

Arkadia most schools only closed for one week and have been opened again .

RaraRachael · 21/10/2020 12:24

Well said BlueThursday apart from my sister who still thinks NS is doing a good job, I don't know anyone who supports her ever-changing list of restrictions. You just get used to what's allowed when, here we go again, we have to change to something else.

We go back to school on Monday after holidays where kids weren't allowed to visit family and friends and it's pished down virtually every day, so that's done a lot for everybody's health and wellbeing.

Once we're back there won't be much in the way of outdoor activities for my class I'm damned if I'm risking catching whatever standing around in a playground while the kids faff around with minimal equipment

I've just SO had enough of all this shit and her Angry

Goingdooolally · 21/10/2020 12:26

Any of you on UsforThem?

OP posts:
NotAnActualSheep · 21/10/2020 12:30

theotherfossilsister It's all so sporadic, though. We're in Edinburgh and the 2 libraries closest to us are still closed. The nearest open one is just over a 4 mile return walk, which is doable for us (though miserable in the rain!) but not for all I would think - and not "essential" to permit public transport. And we're only allowed to return books - to browse or do other things you need to prebook a 15 min slot. I've just had to book DSs swim/gym classes online for when they restart mid November (yeah, like that's going to happen!) and we haven't been able to use the pool til now because they're lane swimming only (again, prebookable) and treat children like the plague. Plus they seem very reluctant to allow people to use changing rooms, and a mile walk home in wet swim clothes doesn't really appeal.

It kind of takes away the spontaneity a bit and makes things very difficult for people who don't have access to private transport. So although they are strictly "open" they are nothing like normal, and are not a pleasant environment at all.

Other activities also in no way reopened "as normal" (if at all) over the summer, especially for children, and still aren't fully there. DSs private music lessons are zoom only (his school ones haven't restarted at all) , his science group hasn't restarted, church group is zoom only (with possibility to return outside only from November)... No soft play, no trampolining, no indoor play dates, no singing group, no "interactive" sections available in the museum. Its all pretty miserable for him. If they take away playparks I think I will actually cry.

BlueThursday · 21/10/2020 12:32

Btw I think for the first time in Scotsnet history we need a second thread. This is nearly full!

Bikingbear · 21/10/2020 12:40

You know what I really don't get
We are all sick of NS. Her endless restrictions, constant change, not giving anything a chance to work before more change.
Yet there seems to be a massive number wanting independence, regardless of what the Islands want.

I just don't get it!

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 12:41

@NotAnActualSheep, that is interesting.
SkyHigh has reopened here and private music classes are going ahead in person.
Yesterday we went to the Safari park and a few activities were shut due to Covid (like the zip-line :( ), but in general it was a normal day. The only things you noticed is the one way systems and the omnipresent gel, but people were acting normally. I could count the number of masks I saw using one hand.

Goingdooolally · 21/10/2020 12:46

Who is all sick of her? Those complaining are making the most noise, doesn’t mean the quiet ones agree!

@Bikingbear, because the one thing the SNP are good at is to make sure that everything revolves around in independence and blame the English at any available opportunity. There is no other show in town. Their record in Government, even well pre-covid, is appalling by any standard (and yes, I know how nice the baby box is and yes, I am thankful for no tolls on bridges and almost universal free parking at hospitals), and yet nobody cares.
In other words, we get the government we deserve.
