October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

@BlueThursday

There’s already huge apathy with it all. More and more people are going to start ignoring the rules because a) they constantly change and unless you’re glued to your phone or tv You can’t keep up b) nothing seems to be stemming the spread so might as well just do what we want c) it’s winter, we’re Scottish and we are miserable at the best of times never mind adding this to our woes
This.

All the restrictions seem pointless and this constant one upmanship on measures and tiers doesn’t help.

WouldBeGood · 21/10/2020 12:50

Even my most ardent SNP supporting friends are sick of them now. They’re more Boris than Andy Butnham

WouldBeGood · 21/10/2020 12:52

@throwingawaymyshot I’d suggest a nice break in England. I had a lovely time last week.

New thread? @BlueThursday

Ecosse · 21/10/2020 12:57

I would certainly be very pissed off if I were a restaurant owner in somewhere like Stirling it Falkirk. Cases now below the national average and below areas where hospitality can still operate. Yet she’s keeping them shut indefinitely.

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 12:59

I have just read it is official.
We continue like this till Nov 2nd when the new multi tear tier system will kick in.
I am sure my friend who has a restaurant will be overjoyed.

CovidNightmare · 21/10/2020 13:00

@BlueThursday

Btw I think for the first time in Scotsnet history we need a second thread. This is nearly full!
Remember a 2000+ one ONCE, went to 3 threads, a couple of years back, second referendum related.

I think the issue with the council run stuff like libraries and Edinburgh leisure swimming is that they seem to take forever to reopen. The private swimming classes some friends go to in Edinburgh have been going since early October. It's not the restrictions alone just the slow response of the council.

Same with children's activities. Ours have been back since start of school. Some outdoor ones even before that. Most have some adjustments which can be a bit annoying but we got used to it I guess.

throwingawaymyshot · 21/10/2020 13:05

I had already booked a break in the central belt in a fancy hotel from 31-2nd November. dinner bed breakfast.

I'm not sure if all I will get now is the bed???

And even if I cancel, would I even be allowed to travel to England instead? Its all the same restrictions too.

I just wanted a nice birthday :(

Sturmundcalm · 21/10/2020 13:13

Continuing the current system is kind of ridiculous... Figures may change but as of last night Dundee had nearly 3 times as many cases/100k as East Lothian but they can continue with lesser restrictions while East Lothian has to stick to stricter rules?? It doesn't make any sense at all.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53511877

I met a friend for breakfast this morning in a cafe (we're in a non-restricted area so could have gone to Wetherspoons though!). The table we were sitting across from each other at was less than a metre wide, and of course there were loads of other folk in eating/picking up takeaway. It would have been FAR safer to sit in my kitchen or her living room where we would have been over 2m apart... I know there are concerns about how some folk behave but I felt as though the SG were pushing me into more risky behaviour.

prettybird · 21/10/2020 13:13

Who is all sick of her? Those complaining are making the most noise, doesn’t mean the quiet ones agree

Hear, hear Smile

That's why I rarely post on this thread.

OrangeLeavesYellowLeaves · 21/10/2020 13:15

It's true about cafes. I fear that they'll be the next to shut.

user1487194234 · 21/10/2020 13:18

Feel so sorry for everyone in the Hospitalty industry,they are being hung out to dry.The people making the decisions are getting paid regrdless.

WouldBeGood · 21/10/2020 13:29

@throwingawaymyshot no, we were able to stay in a hotel and have drinks indoors, even music playing, dinner with wine

NotAnActualSheep · 21/10/2020 13:36

callisto1 yes, I agree Edinburgh has been especially slow (we've been having a particular fight with community centres which wouldn't let our after school club operate, even though childcare was allowed through the summer) and situations like arkadia mentioned, where its much better in other council areas. So maybe we've been prolonging the agony by just waiting and not going to private providers... but it does seem unfair that we should have to, and make DS cope with yet another change... And as I said, not even all private providers have been able to operate normally (though I can understand in our situation why not).

throwingaway I do feel for you... Its really horrible. I think hotels are still able to serve meals to residents though, so you should be OK there. Though if you go to England you'd be allowed a glass of wine with your meal at least, even in the highest tier! Or a champagne breakfast.

On the cafe thing it appears we've been doing it all wrong by going to them if they're open. Turns out we should have been following made up rules and know they were only open as a social club for single people and not for anyone to use. And if we carry on using them in this way they'll be closed, and it'll be our fault because we're so selfish. FFS.

Arkadia · 21/10/2020 13:38

@prettybird, that goes without saying.
The fact that for vast sections of society she embodies the second coming is a (sad, very sad) reality.

Bikingbear · 21/10/2020 14:17

The trouble is they fucked up in Glasgow, faffing around instead of doing what they did with Aberdeen - 3 week lockdown and everything is open again.

Glasgow, you can go to a cafe but not a pub, where is the logic? I could even see a logic if they said 3 week ban on alcohol, instead of everyone trying to cramp into cafes. It makes no sense.

readsalotgirl63 · 21/10/2020 14:26

With regard to local authority services resuming e.g libraries - the challenge may be that staff have been redeployed elsewhere within the authority to support essential services .
In my authority some of my staff were redeployed to assist with meal deliveries in sheltered housing or to the customer service phoneline for example. This obviously had an impact on the availability of staff when we then needed them to do their "proper" job.
The other big challenge is resuming services while ensuring compliance with distancing measures. For libraries the need to quarantine items returned creates storage issues - thinking of the many places I've worked with teeny tiny back office space !

OrangeLeavesYellowLeaves · 21/10/2020 14:29

Oh no I went out in our family group thinking I was doing right and supporting businesses on the high street!😆
You have to laugh or you'd cry.

@OrangeLeavesYellowLeaves

Oh no I went out in our family group thinking I was doing right and supporting businesses on the high street!😆 You have to laugh or you'd cry.
Haha! No, no...turns out you (and us) were being selfish granny-murderers and taking away the chance for people living alone to see others by flocking carelessly to cafes when we could sit out in our gardens or a park in the pouring rain and howling gales to meet friends. Ah well, turns out that meeting friends and wider family is only important if you live alone. Not sure that message was especially well communicated. Maybe they need a new 5 letter acronym.

readsalot yes, I'd heard that about redeployment (that was why our bins couldn't be emptied in March, apparently), and can also understand about the space (though I'm not convinced quarantining would be especially effective...why not just insist on washing hands before and after touching the books? Though I understand if it is in the guidance, libraries will have to be seen to be following it). But libraries have been able to open from July (?) so you'd have thought they'd have worked out more sustainable staffing by now. Seems crazy to have qualified librarians doing something else when their usual job needs doing, but I assume they simply don't have the cash to employ more people to do the jobs the librarians were doing (especially if there is the risk they may be closed down again at any moment). Though I can't totally discount the "yes, it is crazy" theory.

readsalotgirl63 · 21/10/2020 18:27

Not everyone who works in a library is a qualified librarian - sorry being pedantic.
Libraries have to follow guidance - not just be seen to follow it with regard to distancing, face coverings, taking contact details, and quarantining books. There is evidence that the virus persists on plastic - hence the 72 hour quarantine period. Part of the reason for doing some of this is to reassure staff - who themselves /family members have underlying health conditions.
Although libraries" could" open" in July there was a lot of figuring out of processes and procedures not to mention shifting furniture to ensure sufficient space - and coping with the return of everything which had been out on loans since March.
The other thing which many local authority buildings had to contend with was resuming scheduled maintenance checks which had been stopped during lockdown. We had to wait to get fire alarms checked for instance.

readsalotgirl63 · 21/10/2020 18:32

The other issue is that more staff may be required - we used to have some libraries single staffed - but its almost impossible for 1 person to stand at the door, remind people about the need for a face covering, take contact details and issue/put returned books into quarantine and answer the phone all at the same timeGrin - although they do try !

NotAnActualSheep · 21/10/2020 19:16

Thanks! Yes that all makes sense and I do understand it's difficult for staff doing umpteen other things on top of their actual job. I think I'm just grumpy that somewhere that we used to really like going has, like everywhere else, become rather a trial to get to and not particularly nice or relaxing when we're there. I know that's life now and I'm not criticising the libraries themselves who are doing their best to keep staff and the public safe... Its just one more thing that's become much crappier than last year, which is upsetting me!

I think this is the last post, but there's a new thread here!

NotAnActualSheep · 21/10/2020 19:22

No.. is the last post. Grin
