October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

My colleague from Perthshire is off to Center Parcs today. We here in Edinburgh have another 2 weeks of waking up every day and wondering if we are going to be allowed to go on our very low key, low risk holiday.

I'm so sick of all this. Just tell us already. They clearly know what they are planning. If they keep us hanging for another 10 days then cancel our holiday with 2 days notice I will be so pissed off.

WouldBeGood · 05/10/2020 10:54

It’s really fucking miserable that we can’t even look forward to a little domestic break 😢

Goingdooolally · 05/10/2020 11:05

@iquitelikenormalityafterall
I agree but I am following the rules but am not an SNP supporter. All my friends are pretty much Labour/conservative and the former follow the rules, the latter less so Hmm

Yes @Rae36 DS school has next week and week after next off. I've made Premier inn bookings so we can visit relatives in England for a few days in the second week but now wondering if I should bring them back to this weekend which would be a real pain.

The not knowing sucks the joy out of everything, plus if she makes it anything less than mandatory non travel we're going. Numbers in Edinburgh have risen because the decision was taken to make students take up residence. So I'm angry that we're probably going to be further restricted because of that, not because of any misdoings on the Edinburgh residents behalf.

Goingdooolally · 05/10/2020 11:34

@rookiemere you’re right about it sucking the joy out! I really want to book some stuff for our trip (kayaking etc..) but can’t risk it. Just let us know already!! Not to mention teaching. I’m having to prep for potential online learning. For how long? Who knows? I know this is a small thing when people are losing their lives but it’s hard when it’s unknown.

We were told from our Edinburgh primary that they will have online learning ready from October half break if it is needed. We finish 16th Oct. But that was at the start of term and they didn't say anything about online since.

I hate the waiting and uncertainty too. We are supposed to see family in half term. It's been postponed several times and we are not postponing it again. We can form an extended household it's just the travel that is an issue. Last time they allowed travel for extended households so I hope they will again. It's miserable not being able to support family who are alone and struggling.

Rae36 · 05/10/2020 12:09

Me too.

secretllama · 05/10/2020 13:35

Good luck with compliance. People are getting beyond pissed off , and lockdowns do not work long term in controlling the virus but cause long term economic damage and to mental health . No way am I not seeing my family again. Not a chance. And many , many people I know are the same.

AgentCooper · 05/10/2020 13:58

It’s really bloody unfair that they don’t just come out and say what they’re planning or indeed not planning. Voters will remember this shite. It’s like a stupid wee game to scare us into complying.

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 05/10/2020 14:09

Absolutely @AgentCooper. They say “further restrictions” but don’t say what they are. Lockdowns should be the last resort. Did the government really fail so spectacularly in preparing for winter that we need a lockdown already?! Time should be spent on improving Test and trace and the hospital capacity. If it’s October and this is the situation we are already in, then surely this mini lockdown is just covering up any failings. Shocking.

soloula · 05/10/2020 14:39

WHO said at the beginning of this that the way out was test test test. We're heading for a lockdown, circuit break or whatever you want to call it because they failed to take this on board. The app should have been live months ago and the testing system should have been armed to cope with the increased demand for tests when schools went back as it seems like that's where it all started going wrong. Not saying it's the schools fault, just that there was a vital point then when phase 3 was opening up lots of things and in combination with the schools and people mixing there were a lot more people needing tests that we didn't have the capacity for. Add the eat out and the unis going back and it was a recipe for disaster.

I just find the whole thing so frustrating (and depressing) as I stuck to the rules for months and it feels like it was all for nothing.

rookiemere · 05/10/2020 14:46

To be fair to SG the British government is also doing a fine old job of botching things up with restrictions seemingly randomly applied to Northern non conservative areas and less so in their own constituencies even with similar numbers. Also equally mysterious messaging on the October circuit breaker.

I do think though where I've lost patience with SG diktats is the not letting anyone see anyone else inside. Fair enough in areas with high infection rates, but there are parts of Scotland where hardly anyone is infected. I get we want to keep it that way, but as this is a long haul game it seems unnecessarily draconian, particularly as it doesn't seem to be applied as harshly across other European countries

AgentCooper · 05/10/2020 14:51

@soloula indeed. Lockdown is such a blunt instrument but it’s been portrayed as the way out because our governments can’t get their arses in gear with testing. And the punitive tone we get from the likes of Jason Leitch when they’re the ones fucking up.

Ecosse · 05/10/2020 15:23

Sturgeon has had 6 months now to get a track and trace system working effectively and with sufficient capacity, yet her and her government have failed to do so.

Many businesses will simply not reopen after another lockdown, but Sturgeon has the advantage of not needing to worry about the economy of course.

BlueThursday · 05/10/2020 16:00

I feel we (the majority anyway) have done everything asked of us yet it’s still not good enough

We are forever getting told it’s the public’s fault because of x, y, z and no acceptance from government, both Scottish and U.K., that they have been less than exemplary

rookiemere · 05/10/2020 16:05

Agree @BlueThursday , it would be nice for those in power to acknowledge that mistakes have been made - and of course they will as this is an unparalleled situation we're in - rather than just constantly beleaguer the poor public who - on the whole - have been following the now rather arbitrary instructions pretty well.

ClarencesMum · 05/10/2020 16:18

Long term SNP/Indy/Nicola fan here but I'm done. How dare she and her band of muppets treat us like this? Drip feeding threats, changes and plans to us like we are all fucking numpties. She was at it two weeks ago, and now again. Fuck right off. I have no respect for her any more. She stands their like some fucking president on a daily basis threatening us if we dinnae behave.

"I know it's not easy". Aye sure you do hen, how about tackling your beloved Glasgow and their rates and let the rest of us life without being under your thumb constantly.

Where does this end?

Absolute cunt of a government. I'm so done with them.

ClarencesMum · 05/10/2020 16:22

My eyes were well and truly opened when her and JS spent a weekend defending the absolute shit show that was the exam results. Then it was like it dawned on them these bairns would be casting their first votes next year so lo and behold, everything was put right. Fucking done.

WouldBeGood · 05/10/2020 16:32

This about sums up my view!
Pootle40 · 05/10/2020 16:42

Unless there are police on the M6 we will be going away on Saturday - circuit break or not

Pootle40 · 05/10/2020 16:43

So sick of being told that 'we are considering' what we need to do 'in the coming days'

They know Exactly what they are going to do and when.

Sick of this BS.

Ecosse · 05/10/2020 16:51

I wish Sturgeon and Leitch would quit with the childish threats and vague talk of ‘further measures’.

She is well aware that the failure to establish a working test and trace system and the decision to throw thousands of 17 and 18 year olds together in communal accommodation is her fault.

So much for her elimination strategy and closing the English border.

WouldBeGood · 05/10/2020 16:52

I’m due to go to Edinburgh for a couple of nights..but no point if everything is shut

LizzieMacQueen · 05/10/2020 16:56

We were promised we'd be treated as adults in the earlier days. 'Grown Up discussion' - I just looked it up.

What happened to that?

AgentCooper · 05/10/2020 17:18

The chastising tone that was used to address students, Jesus Christ. I work for one of the worst hit unis and believe me, they were pummelled all summer with campus is open and we want you to come here messages, dangling the prospect of f2f teaching when it was always unlikely it was going to happen. If there had not been a single party the virus would still have spread in those halls.
