The worst thing anyone has said to you?

Just going through a break up with someone I thought I loved very much but should have been aware it wasn’t going to work - we met just as he was splitting from
a long relationship and in hindsight I should have realised he wasn’t ready for another one. I’ve been crying uncontrollably and it hurts …but remembering some of awful things he said to me - the top two being:

1: on our first holiday in gorgeous Athens after we had been together for two years - I was so excited to be with him until he asked me to take a photo of him and another group of people so he could say to his family he was on a history trip rather than away with me.

2: I have some bad perimenopause and had said that I had quite bad anxiety. He said “don’t put that on me”. What a gent.

anyone got anything better?

There is no heartbeat.

I’m so sorry.💐

"Well, you will probably die by suicide or lung cancer" my ex DH

And also

"You're never going to acheive (what I hoped to acheive and had been working towards for years)" Also ex DH

Another man I dated told me my mother was an incredibly beautiful woman.

Glad I binned them off!

I would have said Snap .

Haha - I'm just not quick enough, and anyway she didn't look much different tbh, her manners hadn't improved though.

Chockachip · 08/09/2026 16:55

“None of us know how long we’ve got, do we?”
after receiving news that my child had a life limiting condition.

Wasn’t the worst ever but it stuck with me most.

You didn’t lose a baby just a blob of cells .

You did nothing to prevent yourself from being sexually assaulted.

I can do CPR but I wouldn’t on you . I would call an ambulance and stand and watch .

Sending you a hug. These are awful. I hope you escaped him.

"If I looked like you, I would have given up already"
Said to me by my ex-best friend.
I had just booked a $12,000 trip to Japan for her birthday and going to Japan was always her dream.
I went to her house to talk to her and tell her about this trip, and before I could tell her, she looked at me in the eyes and said "If I looked like you, I would have given up already"
I told her about Japan, she got this look in her eye like she knew she messed up.
She tried to apologize, say she didn't mean it, but I got right up and walked out of there.
Needless to say, me and my sister had a wonderful time in Japan.

That’s awful, but what prompted her to even say that? Some of the replies on here are horrific but there’s context, this has no context.

A couple from my dad. The day after my husband died from cancer he "joked" to my distraught teenagers that id bumped him off for his money. Followed by attending the wake and telling complete strangers to him that my husband was the richest man in the cemetery and we were all fine. He's now a very lonely old man. I hate the sight of him

People say weird shit when someone dies. They think humour will ‘help’, or they just say ridiculously tactless things.
When my dad died I was 16 and my mum’s friend came round, while we were chatting she said / you’re gonna be poor for a bit now.
Actually we weren’t, as he’d taken out a comprehensive life assurance policy.

"Yes, my ex wife has moved back in. Because of your jealousy". I only found out because I walked past and saw her unpacking her suitcases through the window!!

"I don't want any children with you - you can't look after the ones you've got". (I have zero self esteem but even I know that's not true).

"I don't love you, I never loved you. You knew this was just a short term thing".

I am sure that it isn’t true. What an awful thing to say. He was just clutching at straws to excuse what he had done.

That I 'cheapened' sex. Except he called it 'lovemaking' and had a fixation with virginity. 🤮 Plus, he wore pointy shoes and sulked. WTF was I thinking?

Sorry but that is a really weird post. What had you intended that she do with the bottle of wine - drink it with you? That’s not why you give a gift.

Well, I was visiting her at her new house and spend the day with her, having been best friends for 10+ yrs. And then be told “you can bugger of as I’ll be drinking this with my (whoever that was) “other friend”. Seeing that I was living abroad and going out my way to spend a day with her..well…it hurt.

mtobrokeme · 08/09/2026 18:15

A very toxic workplace in the late eighties early nineties. Before harassment and bullying laws came in .

"and don't go giving him your sob story, either."

My mum to me. I was raped as a mid-teenager and I was seeing a new guy in my early 20s. We're happily married now and been together 20 years. I barely speak to her now, though civil. She claims she doesn't remember saying it but what the fk would go through a mothers mind to say that to her daughter... It's not like I ever brought it up again after the police took my statement.

We were talking the other day and I told her why I don't need her advice now, she wasn't there for me when I needed it, I certainly don't now. She told me it hurts her and I should stop talking about the past. (I don't talk about it as it's pointless so not sure where she got that from either!) And I couldn't care less if it hurts her to hear it, it hurts me that she said it and still won't let us air it out.
Doesn't stop her going on about how much her dad loved her and how much her mum adored her though...

In the last conversation I ever had with my mother, she told me that I might not remember but my dad used to hit me when I was a child. I was actually 17 the last time he hit me and it only stopped because he moved out. It happened almost daily from when I was quite a young child.

Might not remember? When I started dating, I would dump boys/men who didn't hit me because I believed that it meant they didn't care about me if I didn't make them angry. I was absolutely terrified of my parents growing up. I was in my 30s before I internalised that violence had no place in a relationship. Before that, I would try and goad men into hitting me as proof that they cared.

Anyway, I told her that it just meant that she wasn't capable of protecting children given it had never bothered her.

Her reply was, "Of course it bothered me. Didn't you notice that I always left the room so I didn't have to see it?"

That's probably the worst thing she or anyone has ever said to me.

Edited

Omg, that's brutal. Sending love

BritishDesiGirl · 08/09/2026 18:48

I have so.many OP. I've had constant comments about my skin colour, my weight, l'm south Asian and a bit a darker than some of my immediate family. I've been insulted by them, strangers, who apparently seem it as cpsmtructivr critism!!

I have young daughter and made it my mission for them not to feel insecure about their looks and weight from anyone.

AppleAndBannans · 08/09/2026 18:55

My ex girlfriend said “ I cheated on you twice while we were together including sleeping with my ex boyfriend “

honeylulu · 08/09/2026 19:23

Plenty from my mother.

When I was dating my first boyfriend: "he's only going out with you because he can't get anyone else".

I was the main social organiser in my friend group: "if you didn't chase after them none of them would bother with you".

"You're no oil painting". Etc

My dad was nearly as bad. Most of his "hilarious" speech at my wedding was stuff like thank you to my husband for taking me on, poor him, it wouldn't be an easy task hahaha.

Quite mild compared to the really horrible comments on this thread but I admit at times I've been jealous of friends whose parents praised them lovingly. But I've tried to do that with my children so they don't feel like I did.

I've asked my parents about it later in life and their reasoning was they didn't want me to be vain (no chance of that!) and I seemed so self assured they thought I needed taking down a peg or two. Gee thanks.

I would have said 'Twat'.

Fedupcreative86 · 08/09/2026 19:54

Called a "fat twat" in Liverpool City centre a couple of months ago. I'm a size 12. He looked a bit off his head anyway, and even a couple of young lads looked at him as if he was insane, but if there hadn't have been cctv and people everywhere I'd have knocked him to the floor! Gladly, that's the only insult I've had since moving here a year ago- scousers are golden!

No where near as bad as some of the others I've read here though (I'm 40 and have a thick skin)- I'm absolutely raging for the poor lady in the wheelchair who got spat on 💐

Fedupcreative86 · 08/09/2026 20:02

@shhblackbag 💐

IwanttoWFH · 08/09/2026 20:17

Nowhere near as bad as some on here but a guy I was seeing, who treated me awfully said to me, “I don’t think I’ll ever meet ‘the one’” whilst we were out on a date and “my friends don’t like you and think we’re not well suited”.

A couple from men at work:

  1. “everyone calls you the chubby Reese Witherspoon” (I was a size 10) and
  2. “I didn’t want to admit I knew you, in case it affected me getting the job, as you’re marmite”. He then proceeded to ask me to have a look at his application form. Needless to say, I didn’t…!

My mother when I was 14 said to me: "Your father's having an affair and it's all your fault."

Thats awful.

My mum also believed that women were solely responsible for men having affairs.

When my dad finally met someone else and left, she screamed at me in garden that I was "the whore who drove [my] father into the arms of a other woman".
