The worst thing anyone has said to you?

Just going through a break up with someone I thought I loved very much but should have been aware it wasn’t going to work - we met just as he was splitting from
a long relationship and in hindsight I should have realised he wasn’t ready for another one. I’ve been crying uncontrollably and it hurts …but remembering some of awful things he said to me - the top two being:

1: on our first holiday in gorgeous Athens after we had been together for two years - I was so excited to be with him until he asked me to take a photo of him and another group of people so he could say to his family he was on a history trip rather than away with me.

2: I have some bad perimenopause and had said that I had quite bad anxiety. He said “don’t put that on me”. What a gent.

anyone got anything better?

So sorry OP - you can do better than someone who takes two years to go on holiday with you.

I’ve never had anyone say anything truly awful but once an American boyfriend told me I was very negative. That always stayed with me and I did make an effort to change my outlook after that.

My ex once sent me a screenshot of another woman showing him she bought and was taking a pregnancy test because she thought she was pregnant with his baby while still seeing me. He sent me the screenshot and blocked me left me on a cliff hanger not knowing if she was pregnant or not.

Mother:

"If abortion had been legal, I'd have had one" and
"No you can't have the pink dress, pink is fkr pretty girls".

But MIL topped it after: miscarriage at 17 weeks, MMC at 12 weeks, ds (perfect at 36.3 but I had an epidural), and after DS 2 died at 27 weeks (heart condition not compatible with life) "it's such a shame you can't perform". I had DD 51 weeks later, so my childbearing was resolved and it was 29 years ago. Sadly, she's 90 and frail now. I don't put myself out for her.

So sorry to hear this.

My own mother would tell me I belonged in a children's home, throughout childhood and teens, after very minor misdemeaners.

She's now in her early 80s and frail and has recently accused me of not making enough effort .

“oh nice, I’ll drink that with my friend tonight!”, when handing over a really nice bottle of wine to my friend I’d known since I was 16. Admittedly, yes, I’d moved abroad, but on a home visit I came to see her and handed her the bottle as a welcome to her new house. Fucking bitch. 10+ yrs of friendship instantly wiped out - cut all ties after that.

Sorry but that is a really weird post. What had you intended that she do with the bottle of wine - drink it with you? That’s not why you give a gift.

My mother

'God,your fat downstairs and not enough upstairs' (she was a size 30,I was a 12 but my arse was too big and my tits too small apparently)

'Your not my favourite,in fact I don't love you at all'

'What did you do to lead him on?'

'You deserved it,don't wind him up'

'You look awful,no matter what you wear'

'I hope you die first so I can dance on your grave'

'Your too thick to be educated-we don't have money to waste on you' (money was there when it was my brother's time for college/driving lessons/stuff for their homes etc)

'Well, you do encourage the bullies' (and did nothing to stop them-in fact she would befriend their mothers)

'Why can't you be more like golden child brother?' (The same brother that is a druggie, belts her if he can't get his own way, steals from her, doesnt have a job for long if he gets one at all, lies to her face and much more but is totally perfect in her eyes)

She's a total narc,im nc with her and she claims she can't understand why!

The worst was my darling, brave and beautiful friend

She was a warrior to the end,but just as cancer was about to take her,her bastard boyfriend told her 'hurry up and fucking die-i want to move in with my real girlfriend'

She died the following week and that arsehole was sat weeping, wailing and making a show of himself in the front row of the crematorium

I watched him in disgust and wanted to say something, but a funeral wasn't the right place to do it (and then I had to race off to get the kids from school)

Got loads of sympathy from all her other mates and moved in with the other woman the next day

Apparently 'life has to go on!'

Tosser

I’m so sorry your mother is so awful.

AMillionTomorrows · 08/09/2026 14:44

“If you’re not careful you’ll end up with no job no kids and no friends”

something my sister said when I was suffering from depression and failed fertility treatment, shortly after a miscarriage.

it was years ago, I have had 2 kids and a thriving business since, and made plenty friends but I can hear those words like it was yesterday.

Kitfish · 08/09/2026 14:06

My mother when I was 14 said to me: "Your father's having an affair and it's all your fault."

My mother has been saying that to me for 37 years (and counting). I had the nerve to get married, and made my father 'feel old' (he was 41) so that's why he had his exit affair.

She lives on the other side of the world - I moved to get away - and I've not seen her in 17 years (and counting). Probably won't see her again and definitely won't be attending her funeral.

You reap what you sow.

ChateauProvence · 08/09/2026 14:53

My MIL “I’ve had to buy a dog as you haven’t produced any grandchildren for me’ while I was in the middle of fertility treatment which she fully knew about. When I finally did produce said grandchild she made fuck all effort with them anyway

Coffeeandallthebooks · 08/09/2026 14:55

'Oh, I thought you didn't like him much.'

Said by my so called friend when my mum had phoned to tell me my stepfather was dying of incurable brain cancer when I was 18. I was sobbing at the time she spoke.

She also had her mum buy her a flat, then rented a room to me and dh for the cost of her remaining mortgage. It was a single room, while she had a double to herself, but she also included the hall cupboard. We moved out as soon as we could find somewhere else, to which she said, 'Well who is going to pay my mortgage?'

Terrifyingly she's now a doctor who works with addicts in a city centre, and I hope for their sake's she's finally grown a sense of empathy.

tombombaclot · 08/09/2026 15:11

Not half as bad as most of these but a guy I was seeing said ‘I never met a white woman with lips as big as yours… the ones on your face are pretty big too actually. But seriously you’re worse than that woman off Embarrasing Bodies.’
I didn’t quite know what to say, was about 19 and utterly confounded by the whole statement so I just got up and left. Cue a lifetime of being self conscious, always having to wear a skirt over bikinis, long jumpers over tight trousers etc.
My mum had probably said worse over the years (about my personality) but that one stung a bit!

smbu · 08/09/2026 15:12

My ex-husband, after I raised a concern about his Mum driving our child without putting his seatbelt on, shouted in my face that I should NEVER question his mother, that ''at least he knows who his mother is'' - I'm adopted :-(

Or the time he hit me so hard, my head hit off my toddler son who was in my arms at the time & caused a huge lump on baby's head - ''Looked what you've done now''

"You're meant to keep my stomach full and my balls empty" (shudder)

Christ. The misogyny must have been weeping out of his pores !!

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 08/09/2026 15:23

I can’t really remember because anyone who says anything bad to me I just file under “jealous bitch”. It’s probably not true, and maybe some of it was valid but when I was a kid my mum always told me people were “just jealous” and I’ve kind of just ran with that.

@GreyCarpet Your ex is doing love right. Your sister though, it makes you feel like they’re waiting for bad shit to happen to you to prove them right and boy could she not wait to reel that line out. as if we don’t all know Christians who’ve had god awful shit fall on them just the same as those of us without the creator of all known things on our side. I’d have been tempted to say something like ‘if hanging around with your version of god means you end up saying stuff like that to people when they need your humanity? Well you can bloody keep it.’

Edited

Yup all the self proclaimed “Christians” I know are a bunch of self righteous, smug assholes. Not a one of them actually lives by any of Jesus’ teachings but boy do they love to lord it over you as if they are somehow better for turning up to church once a week. Twats.

Geegeehadid · 08/09/2026 15:27

You’re so useless you can’t even carry my baby (when I was going through a miscarriage) followed by being thrown on the floor.
i now have a much better (second) husband

AutumnRussett · 08/09/2026 15:30

You didn’t lose a baby just a blob of cells .

You did nothing to prevent yourself from being sexually assaulted.

I can do CPR but I wouldn’t on you . I would call an ambulance and stand and watch .

I have only read the first page and I could honestly cry at some of the cruel things that have been said.
I know people often say things they don't mean, me included, but some of the cruel words here are unforgivable.

Yep, truly thankful for lovely parents and genuine friends.

Cotopaxi · 08/09/2026 15:46

"I don't know why you're so upset, you're not the one who's dying"

Said by my toxic exH to his sister, whose DH was terminally ill.

Fernticket · 08/09/2026 15:57

I'm sorry that so many of you have had such awful things said to them, especially from the people who should love us most
@sharksnip @shhblackbag I'm sorry you had the misfortune to meet such utter utter C**nts.
Shout out to@VimesandhisCardboardBoots for sharing his story and learning from it. Glad your DP is now singing again.

Craftysue · 08/09/2026 16:02

A couple from my dad. The day after my husband died from cancer he "joked" to my distraught teenagers that id bumped him off for his money. Followed by attending the wake and telling complete strangers to him that my husband was the richest man in the cemetery and we were all fine. He's now a very lonely old man. I hate the sight of him

fridgegrazer · 08/09/2026 16:31

Not the worst thing - and certainly nowhere near as awful as some on this thread - but I have never forgotten it. My now ex DH and I met up with a friend/acquaintance whom we hadn't seen for several years. She said "I wouldn't have known you, you have changed - woefully." This was at a friend's house. I just didn't know what to say and she seemed to have no idea of how rude she'd been. (I wonder if she knew what woefully meant.)

silvermoonssparkling · 08/09/2026 16:42

You're a cancer in my life - ExH

The context was I stopped blindly believing his lies and started to become braver and challenge his bullshit. When the dominos started falling he completely descended into someone I didn't recognise, still hearing him say that after devoting half my life to him was galling.

Better off now though, he's still a cunt.
