Partner kept a kink secret and now I feel misled

Salmiacchew · 15/08/2026 19:28

I’m in a relatively new relationship (less than a year). Things have been great and he’s been an amazing partner so I can’t complain (until now).

I found out now that he has a secret kink or affinity that he never even mentioned. It only came out when someone else alluded to it in my presence and I asked about it. He seemed embarrassed and said that he didn’t know how and when mention it yet. I let it go at the time but I’ve been thinking about it and getting quite angry.

The things that bother me is that he didn’t tell me about it and it hurts me, because it is clear that previous partners knew about it. It also makes me wonder if I even know him at all or what else he might be hiding, and I’m so mad at the thought that I might have wasted almost a year on someone who kept secrets.

And yes, I will be launching a Clare’s Law request just in case. I’m also considering contacting the person who flippantly made the remark/ joke in the first place to see if it aligns with what he told me. But I’m just mad right now. Things were going too well and I was wondering where the catch was.

He gets off on other people’s pain and degradation?

Fuck no. That is bottom feeder behaviour.
I’m Actually getting quite angry about this .
Those type of men are the ones that fuel the global r*pe academy. The ones who fuel some of the worst aspects of human trafficking. They are the audience for which snuff films are made.
This is a horrible, disgusting man.
Wake up OP. He’s harming others by creating the market for some of the most abhorrent things out there. Don’t hide behind ‘ he hasn’t done it to me’, and feeling wounded that he didn’t share what a sick individual he is.

Exactly.

If all are consenting adults it isn't a crime.

Oh well that’s ok then. Off out are you darling to degrade Mrs Jones, have a nice time, see you laters.

CoffeeBotherer · 16/08/2026 00:19

But it's so easy to do with so many pearls being clutched and knee jerk reactions being typed up without any real world experience to back it up!

It's so easy to say no to someone's fetish, I've done it several times in the past. OP needs to have a discussion and not run to Claire's Law which is unlikely to tell her anything, unless the ex has said there was police involvement. In which case she doesn't need to ask anyone anything, she should just close the door on her way out.

Why are you so dismissive of Claire’s Law? Although you’re not the only one sadly. run to Claire’s Law? Do you see it as tale telling on the poor abusers?

ChavsAreReal · 16/08/2026 13:06

Imo a kink is something like dressing up as a French maid or even something weird like wearing a nappy.

What you're describing is a deviant pervert.

Just end it. Being misled is the least of your worries.

JonBonJ · 16/08/2026 13:30

The worry is OP is already minimising this. " He gets off on witnessing other people’s pain or degradation, not being hurt himself "

He actually likes humiliating, degrading and torturing women for a sex fetish.

Form an orderly queue, ladies.

I've read and occasionally commented on an American chat site for relationships that was established by a woman who wanted to encourage female sex-positivity, to help women become liberated about sex and their sexual desires and to live their best sexual lives. All admirable goals. I read it for a long time and learned a lot. Including about BSDM and poly, and the rules around both, particularly safe words, ongoing honest communication etc. The woman who established the site was both poly and a BDSM sub.

She'd also been violently raped and beaten into a coma by her father when she was 4.

I admired her for not only surviving this but also managing to live a somewhat functional life. But it was clear that her first sexual experience had irrevocably shaped what sex would come to mean for her later. She also eventually could not hold at bay what had been done to her as a child, she became increasingly mentally unwell, and the site had to be taken over by others.

And I see this everywhere, women trying to resolve the trauma that they received at the hands of men/patriarchy in their formative years by trying to rewrite it, by playing it out in their sexual life, by becoming subs.* The same is true for male subs.

I understand this. But I do NOT understand doms or why anyone would like to hurt and humiliate others, regardless of how much the sub wants it and whether it is with respect and with code words and the dom is actually doing everything at the behest of the sub. How can a dom get literally aroused by this? It's basically exploiting the mental and emotional harm that was inflicted on someone as a child so you can imagine yourself to be powerful.

BDSM should not be seen a a cool kink. It's not at all cool, it's based on psychological compulsion and it's weird and disturbing. The normalisation of BDSM as a 'cool' kink has led to an explosion of choking, hair pulling, slapping, and violent sex in porn, with young blokes now thinking that this is the way sex should be done and young women getting brain damage from it.

And then when people point out how weird and creepy BDSM is, and they don't want any part of it in their own sex lives, they're sneered at as being "prudish" and "vanilla". And that they should "try it".

The majority of people like uncomplicated sex that simply gives them a great orgasm, that feels good. They don't want to be hurt, or to hurt. That's healthy, pleasant, lovely sex. THAT should be/remain normalised.

All of this – well said!

'He gets off on witnessing other people’s pain or degradation, not being hurt himself.'

Shocker. Ffs - please get away from this piece if sht. There will be someone out there for you, a man who won't take pleasure in physically hurting and degrading you.

Or getting others in on the act and him directing and watching.

Dozer · 16/08/2026 13:43

Clear ‘run for the hills’. Not a difficult decision. Simply not worth taking the risks.

I'm not dismissive, but the first point of call should be a discussion. Which OP has said is what they will do.

In this situation, a discussion is fairly pointless, though. He's going to say whatever he thinks she wants to hear to placate her (as he's obviously fine with hiding important things from her), and she won't be able to trust a word of it.

Given that it's fairly early on in the relationship and they have no major ties, it's far better to call it quits now, before the sunk cost fallacy kicks in. Especially as it's sexual sadism. They're both incompatible sexually, and he's a liar who is sexually aroused by hurting women - what else is there to talk about?

chirrupybird · 16/08/2026 14:44

I think I would run, he hasn't done anything to you yet, and he wasn't telling you so he didn't frighten you off. And he seems to have done a good job because you are actually thinking about staying. What will you do when he first suggests just a little bit of violence and then just a bit more the next time? When will it be too bad? Don't wait to find out.

ThatCyanCat · 16/08/2026 14:53

CoffeeBotherer · 16/08/2026 14:00

What would the discussion be about? What should OP be looking for him to say and how can she know he means it?

Whatever this kink is, OP has said the porn of it is violent and it disturbed her enough to want to do a domestic violence check (what did you mean by "running to Clare's Law", as if it's telling tales in primary school? You think that's akin to concerned women running a legal background check?).

What's the point of this important discussion? To prove she's as hip and cool non "pearl clutching" and "knee jerk" and "running to Clare's Law" as you are?

MarthaLovesLaughing · 16/08/2026 15:02

It's not a fucking kink. Can we please stop calling it that? Imo this man is a very disturbed deviant.

TheSunBeatsDown · 16/08/2026 16:50

OP, this is so red flag to me that it's fallen out the other side.

He didn't mention it, he's not on a dating site to match him up with women who like this, he hid it, and what he likes to do is potentially dangerous to women. He has poor boundaries (he's taking you out drinking with his sub/ex-wife, that in itself is a power move) and you are going along with it.

Please, for the love of god, speak with a good friend. This man probably has lots of red flags all over him, I already see several in his behaviour (I mean apart from being a violent sadist) and you sound very kind, understanding and willing to listen, so very vulnerable in this situation.

If this man knows what he likes (and I very very much doubt he simply just doesn't like this stuff any more, he knows you will leave him over it though) then why didn't he go looking for women who like it too?

As for safe words, consent- great, if those things happen, but surely being in a submissive position with a stronger male, with only his word that you are in control, with him in a real position of strength and power is highly dangerous if you don't know that person well (the OP clearly doesn't). It's very risky. It's not about two people with mutual interests meeting up and establishing a code of conduct around this, it's about one person not telling the truth about their very distinct potentially dangerous fetish, and being outed by their ex.

As for not disclosing kinks, fetishes, sexual preferences, sexuality, a year in, I value honesty, something so substantial not mentioned/hidden from me (and I ask overtly) would be an absolute deal-breaker. If I was with a man I felt I needed Claire's Law for I'd be out of there today.

newusername4321 · 16/08/2026 18:38

Btw I also think the ex was definitely out of line to mention such private and intimate things about him to anyone else and to embarrass him. I wouldn’t dream of mentioning sexual things about an ex to anyone else. Tbh I don’t think any of this would have been your business.

Oxymorons · 16/08/2026 19:21

Could his ex have continued a sexual relationship with him, a convenient arrangement between them to cater to their mutual kink? Perhaps with his kink catered for he thought he could avoid bringing it up with you. That could also be why she brought it up "accidentally" with you. Regardless there has to be a reason he didn't broach the topic with you, there isn't really any reason that is acceptable is there? I'm sorry he has done this to you x

The guy is a sick fuck. Let’s not give any oxygen to wondering why he didn’t tell OP, or why ex did.
OP should feels grateful she now knows so she can leave him, but I suspect she’ll find a way to be ok with it, like he’s some kind of special prize.

fuchsteufelswild · 16/08/2026 22:39

Excellent point above, OP might want to ask him why he didn't go looking for women with the same interests and how and when exactly had he intended to tell her. If he only gets a kick out of inflicting pain on unwilling partners he would need to keep it a secret until she was in too deep.

OP did think what the catch was, so it seems he's done the prep work already.

IrisPallida · 16/08/2026 23:04

JayJayj · 15/08/2026 22:24

It’s such a broad kink. What exactly is it he is into? Tying up and spanking, using props, breath play?

Maybe it isn’t something that he needs to do just something he does enjoy.

For me, it reads like you feel something about the joke between him and his ex and being on the outside rather than the kink itself.
Having a kink like that doesn’t automatically means they beat their partners. If you feel the need to do a Clare’s law then I think you should split regardless.

The thing that has most given me the absolute fucking rage in this thread is 'breath play'.

BREATH PLAY? It is Getting Off on strangling someone whilst fucking them. On deliberately choking someone and being aroused by that. On letting your partner do that to you because he expects it and wants it and you want to please him and be a fun, open-minded nice girl.

It is our teenage daughters being pressurised into being strangled whilst they have their very first sexual encounters because it has been accepted and normalised by their desperate to be not-vanilla, Nice and Cool mothers. It is our sons who are being taught that this is what girls want and expect and that is an expected and normal part of sex.

How the FUCK did strangling come to be in the same sentence as 'props' or spanking? How have we allowed this to happen?

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 16/08/2026 23:25

@IrisPallida exactly how did we arrive at this point
More than 40+years ago ,my first gf and I learnt about sex together kissing, fumbling etc, then full sex we had a very intense teen relation ship for more than a year.
At no point would have I thought of hurting her likewise with subsequent gf and DW.

The slapping ,spitting ,choking, breathe play..hate that term is not what young girls and women should be expected to facilitate.

shuggles · 16/08/2026 23:57

@Salmiacchew You're being silly. Put yourself in his shoes. Do you think anyone would want to risk scaring off a new partner by declaring they have a fetish for degradation? In that case, it would be impossible for him to find a new partner.

And while it may seem horrible for a man to feel sexual gratification from seeing people being degraded, please bear in mind that there are women who feel sexual gratification when they are degraded.

Most women find the idea of being degraded absolutely abhorrent and say they deserve to be treated with respect - and that's OK - but it's also important to bear in mind that a small number of women enjoy degradation. So long as there is consent, there is nothing bad.

Pinkissmart · 17/08/2026 00:00

Agree about ‘breath play’ . Ffs how many women need to be murdered by men who strangle them under the guise of a so called ‘kink’ before we start calling it what it is. Giving it a cutesy nick name doesn’t make it any less abusive.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/08/2026 08:53

Nothing wrong with vanilla, my friend.

It’s elegant and exclusive. It means you have a great connection with your partner.

I find it amusing that in this new world of relentlessly wanging on about ‘kinks’/ poly/ my super -special identity (that nobody else cares about) / 63 genders /cringey adult cos play /animee conventions/ Pan this and asexual that.. yawn …! Boring !!

Vanilla is the new cool baby !
