Would this freak others out?

Because it did freak me out a bit I guess.
Early days but I’m seeing a guy who honestly seems amazing. I’m not the most self confident person and I feel a bit inferior but that’s obviously my problem and not his fault.

Anyway I went to stay over at his for the first time this weekend and whilst the place is beautiful he had some weird stuff around which made me feel uneasy, like old style weapons. And we’re not talking about a nerdy 18 year old basement dweller but a man in his 40s with a good career and really good manners.

I did ask about them, and he explained that it was a hobby. He seems a bit eccentric which is fine, but I think I just don’t understand the interest and it made me feel a bit vulnerable if this makes sense?

He hasn’t given me any other reason to be wary, apart from me wondering why he’d be interested in me considering that we are quite different in some ways, but super compatible in others. I really like him and he seems really keen, too. I don’t want to make this awkward but I think others would find this a bit weird too?

merely giving examples of women who collect weapons and some of their possible reasons. And also, because they WANT to.

I collect penknives and LOVE a good kitchen knife. In my youth I owned a longbow which I won as a school prize (very posh high C of E grammar) and was a fair archer. I think I am normal and haven't killed anybody yet.

The point of this response is?

utensils and katanas are two different things

Yes it's funny isn't it we must have crossbows and samurai swords to prep the veg apparently.

Don’t embarrass yourself the point is that everybody has deadly weapons in their house and a kitchen knife is gonna be far more useful to kill somebody if you are so minded than a katana.

I never leave the house without a knife and a multitool I must be a murderer.

No, dont embarrass YOURSELF

what do you mean, where are they?

I am guessing everywhere? For the same reasons men are? YOU might not know any, and looking at some ridiculous reactions on here, I can guess why some people will not tell posters from this threads.

Some women are interested in history, some women love shooting range and have a keen interest in modern weapons, some women are keen martial artists and collect weapons related to their interest

How hard can it be to realise many women are as interested, for all the same reasons a man will be, and have the same collections.

Or does it make you feel better about yourself to imagine all of us only fascinated by our kitchen and dusters?

Yes, my MIL has a crossbow, a sword dating to Napoleonic wars and a few other swords. They're pretty cool.

Well that told me.

MN is a funny place at times.

Tbh, if he is into historical stuff and likes the aesthetic, this wouldn't bother me at all. If I got bad vibes from him or he said concerning things, that would be a different matter.

I have stuff in my house that would make some people feel uncomfortable and that's fine. They'd just not be my people and we'd probably not have much in common. But it doesn't say anything about me or my temperament. I'm also a professional with a professional career.

However, if you dont feel comfortable, then you dont have to date him. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Oh and the fact he's good looking doesn't mean anything. It's literally the least important aspect of a person. Nice but not an indicator of a good partner, a good person or anything else positive.

Greebosmum · 28/07/2026 13:08

I do think you need to have a chat with him if you really like him otherwise.

For what it's worth my house is bristling with weapons, fake and authentic (deactivated) but my husband does WW2 reenacting (not as a Nazi before anyone starts). He has also done Romans, English Civil War, Napoleonic Wars and probably other stuff I have forgotten. Also Steam Punk and ComicCon stuff (gosh, he sounds awful 😃). However, you wouldn't know we are awash with weapons because they are all kept out of the way. It could be perfectly innocent BUT if it's not for you, it's not for you.

gwenneh · 28/07/2026 13:10

Exactly. If it's not for you, then it's not for you.

It doesn't matter what I have in my house -- plenty of weapons, some for stage combat and others for show or costume (including a crossbow.) It wouldn't freak me out, but I'm not dating the man, you are.

me too. I have got a bladed multitool that lives in my car and one indoors

cabus · 28/07/2026 13:33

It's the modern crossbows......no thanks.

theneighbourstolemyteacup · 28/07/2026 13:37

One of my staple birthday presents when my kids were invited at birthday parties were junior pocketknife, Opinel are great.

Some posters on here would faint 😂
A child? with a KNIFE? the horror😂😂

The thread has definitely made me realise that this is not as unusual as I thought so it’s definitely helped me clear my head 😊

OM actual G! why did I not know about Opinel?

godmum56 · 28/07/2026 13:49

PS I used to know a bloke (not romantically, he ran a local restaurant) who collected bat'leths, proper sharp ones too. They were beautiful.

creating young serial killers since 1890!

(although I am not sure the kids range existed from the start 😁)

I wonder if this is acceptable for laydeez? https://ravenforge.com/products/star-trek-batleth-pizza-cutter?variant=55196598927746&country=GB&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24036229624&gbraid=0AAAABEJhhD2aa3LXR30xODqtXuhXEiZcp&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxbq1h7T1lQMVNphQBh2b8CWYEAQYBiABEgIVevD_BwE

It probably wouldn't hurt for you to put in a Claire's Law request about him. That's in addition to the advice some PP have given to ask him about the objects. I'd not ask a general question, but ask him to tell you why he's got each specific item. If he's genuinely a collector, he'll be delighted with the opportunity to tell you their history or why he's got a replica of it. Good luck. I hope it either works out for you or you make a decision that he's not for you.

I own several old and replica bits of weaponry - my answer to why I owned each piece would just be, ‘because it looks cool!’. I’m not sure that being able to explain their provenance or backstories is the green flag she’s looking for, or that not doing so is a red flag…

SpaceShark · 28/07/2026 12:45

Well yeah, but a collection of weapons is not an indication of a violent man any more than a collection of horror movies is.

Signs of a violent man include a lack of self control, disrespect and boundary pushing, none of which OP has described. Rather, she's described basically a nice bloke who happens to have a hobby.

Well, that's your interpretation, mine is different.

A guy obsessed with horror films (which usually include a lot of misogynistic violence, with honourable exceptions) would make me think twice as well.

Violent men don't lose control, that's what they want you to think. They know exactly who (when, where and how) they can be violent to. They don't hit their bosses, do they?

DraigCymraeg · 28/07/2026 14:08

LividSummery · 27/07/2026 21:14

Yeah I'd be creeped out by that and not date again.

Of all the things in the world to be into, no need for a bloody crossbow in your home (too many horror films says NOPE).

You do realise that horror films are pretend?

LividSummery · 28/07/2026 14:10

DraigCymraeg · 28/07/2026 14:08

You do realise that horror films are pretend?

And a woman is killed by a man in the UK every three days on average.

There are plenty of hobbies out there without needing to fetishise a bloody cross bow.

ldnmusic87 · 28/07/2026 14:15

I hate weapons, and I would feel very uneasy and not safe.

LoopyLoo1991 · 28/07/2026 14:16

A friend of a friend has a few Samurai swords - both original and replicas - in her upstairs lounge in display cases . Got a game of thrones sword as well which she can barely lift! HOW she got hold of some of them is a bit weird but bizarrely hilarious. She's a goth type who carries a flat blade in her handbag base, so it fits her personality and not freaky.

Boyfriend's old schoolmate does fantasy re-enactments and live action role play, and he makes his own swords and other stuff. Seems pretty normal these days 🤷

AgentPidge · 28/07/2026 14:21

It's the modern crossbows that would concern me. Have you asked him about those? Does he shoot squirrels or something? That would be a no from me.
