I think I have to leave my husband

I have had a nice little life the past few years with my DH, we get on well he’s a nice guy generally and we have an enjoyable time together. He’s quite insecure in his looks and not overly confident so I do feel I fall into the pattern of being a bit motherly, you know giving him reassurance. He says a lot of the time that I’m out of his league. This isn’t wildly attractive I’m sure some people would agree and I can find it annoying as I am not that shallow, I want someone who makes me feel loved and is nice that’s all.

I’d say the issue in our relationship up until now is that I feel like I am putting on a perfect persona all the time as he finds it hard to cope with me in any other raw format version. He gets defensive and upset if I have any Big Feelings - even if they aren’t related to him at all. Therefore I don’t share many big or small feelings with him. Hence the plodding along.

Over time I recognise I feel friendly affection for him with our lives tied together in a house and joint assets etc and I wasn’t going to disrupt anything.

I am a people pleaser and I find it so hard to let people down or put myself first.

I have been working on a short term project with another man for some months now which has ended. During this time we got along great, but I didn’t think anything much of it as I knew the project would end and mostly thought just this guy is a nice guy.

I don’t think we spoke emotionally or overshared our personal lives more than normal colleagues, we worked well as a team and had good fun in the process. As the project came to an end and we said goodbye, we both simultaneously appeared to realise we had formed some kind of feelings for each other.

I assume this is what happens to movie stars on film sets or strictly shows, when you spend a lot of time with someone in close proximity. So I’m not sure it’s real at all. I got worried I was in limerance so was working on detachment

We have had one honest in person conversation about this where we shared exactly identical experiences and thoughts about each other - it’s so weird and uncanny. I feel like we just wanted to check we were not going mad and deluded in our own minds? These moments in our minds were totally identical realisations or memories, matched each other in sync. This has never happened to me before. We both admitted we had grown attracted to each other physically but more than that, we liked each others personalities and couldn’t stop thinking about the other. It’s affecting both our sleep and appetites. We have agreed we need to detach because it’s very dangerous

Running off together is ridiculous, this isn’t some big romantic movie, also this is an awful thing to do to my husband. I’d rather be single right now and have none of this hassle I just want to run away from everything and everyone

I think I’m having a midlife crisis of some kind and I have to leave my DH but I don’t know where to even begin to detangle our complex finances. We don’t have any savings and a huge mortgage and the market is terrible right now for selling. I also feel sick at the thought of telling him I’m not romantically in love with him as it would break his heart.

My concern for you in reading this thread is that you have married someone who never really loved YOU but is obsessed with your looks. How is that going to work out for both of you when you’re 50, 60, 70 and beyond?

Have you tried raising this issue when he objectifies you with the “look at you you’re amazing, I’m gross” comments?

what has your sex life been like? Good sex is never really just about physical attraction? Has it felt like it’s lacking?

WhatNextImScared · 06/08/2026 16:18

Oh wow sorry only just read full set of updates - get out fast

PlaidJane · 06/08/2026 16:27

@WhatNextImScared in all honesty it did not come naturally. We took a long time to get to a good place. I can’t fault a lot of his effort, but many activities were very limited, restricted, some off limits and super vanilla. He needed a lot of reassurance and never really initiated. He didn’t have a lot of confidence and I invested a lot of energy into building this up

We are now only communicating very basic info by email and a shared calendar.

I stated he was not to persist with discussing this with my daughters.

He chose to talk to the younger daughter about the same bloody thing as my other DD, however DD2 is fed up with him now so gave him a short shrift and told him he was being over dramatic.

He keeps going on at them that he’s never going to see them again as we ‘come as a package deal’ and DD apparently replied ‘we still live here. my mum doesn’t try to control me, I can choose what I want to do and who to see and she will understand, but if you carry on with this shit It doesn’t seem likely you will see me again, no’ 😳

Quite proud of her 💪

Your daughter did well to tell him that. He is trying to get at you via them which is so wrong. You may have to keep sending him the same message ....back off and leave my daughters alone

PlaidJane · 13/08/2026 18:33

I am very upset today. I had put a lot of effort into no conflict situations with him and he initiated a peace truce. The atmosphere was much better at home and I was feeling more functional at work. Now I feel almost back to square one.

We had the house valued and the 3rd one was very good. I thought we would discuss putting it on the market. I really need a good deposit as his is huge (unprotected though)

He then announced he still wanted to buy me out and offered me the paltry sum based on what we paid for the house.

I did react badly as I feel manipulated and told him to just take all the money and go away and let me off the deeds, I said I didn’t care anymore I just wanted to get away from him.

He keeps saying he’s not trying to rip me off but then.. tries to rip me off.

He told me a week ago he couldn’t afford to buy me out after all. Now he’s changing his mind again.

Here we go again ..he is NOT on your side so will keep playing tricks. Your response to offering to buy you out needed to be 'I am not prepared to accept your offer because it
is too low' so the house needs to go on the market" He knows all your usual responses so keeps playing you. Change your responses and throw him off your track. I know this is easy for me to say without being emotionally involved.

How many months have you left before you can start divorce proceedings ?

have you seen a solicitor yet ?

5 months

I can file for legal separation now, it’s £500. I hadn’t yet as we would need a solid agreement on property and that’s what we can’t agree on. I asked for mediation he said it was too expensive and won’t pay it. So I can get all the legal advice I like it can’t make him make a decision

I know he wants me out though so he will have to make a decision sooner or later

Also obviously my reaction was not the best. I have since emailed saying we are not objective so any decisions need to be made by professionals involved ie a formal valuation by a valuer for the mortgage, not based on him trying to just get away with the lowest value

Apparently he can afford to buy you out if he rips you off? Further evidence he is a manipulative PoS.

His words mean nothing when his behaviour shows the opposite.

It’s just stupid because I know he knows he would need a real valuation for the lender, however he was panicking because the EA today gave it a far higher valuation than he was expecting. He has spent a week convincing me there is no value in the house so expect to be disappointed in what I get.

He knew I would want to market it at the higher value and then this had fucked up his secret plans so he tried to convince me that the EA wasn’t right and had over valued it. That doesn’t matter, there is a difference between the original value and the highest one and I would therefore at least expect the middle ground between the 2. When I told him this, he then said he can’t afford to buy me out anymore than his small offer so at this point I got cross and told him to do one

@PlaidJane He gets worse with every post you make!

Your desire to get far away from him asap is understandable. I hope you can hold on purely so he cannot shaft you as per his original plan.

He claims to love you and not want to separate yet is vindictive. Small mercy that his plan fell through. Don't trust a word he says.

Alycie · 14/08/2026 09:10

One would think that knowing that his deposit is unprotected he would be much nicer and not try to harass you in such an obvious way. But not only is he horrid, but he also doesn’t dound very smart, to put it mildly.

My thought exactly - he is forcing @PlaidJane (against her innate instinct) into leaning into using that as a negotiating stick - if the courts decide to follow the rules (which they will of course) he will loose out significantly so he's being a short sighted idiot - he's in no position to try and force through what he thinks he wants - his own solicitor would tell him this too but I guess he's not consulted one yet as it seems clear he's still trying to disrupt the inevitable direction of flow in this marriage.
