Even if you don't have a leg(?), a life or a clue, Welcome to the first ever 85th Archers thread! Smile

Wild speculation and sensible questions always welcome - especially any newcomers.

A little game for the weekend, inspired by Timetogetup0630 and Gruach on the last thread:

Invent an explanation for how your username was the inspiration for an Archers storyline, character, etc - be creative!

My username is telling the story of Toby, Adam and Ian, although it probably needs some punctuation: Dad! Dad/Dad? Grin

dairyfarmerswife - bit too easy for you, but as professional country folk maybe you could judge the winner? Star

Credit to MrsGrindah for the clever thread title

I didn't really hear the confession either, sad story line.

LillianGish · 23/02/2018 20:59

Just caught up - sobbing. This is exactly what happened to a friend's wife a few years ago - and with equal speed. I thought it was really well done - the shock and disbelief at what was happening. Eddie was so brilliant. Not sure about the death bed confession - didn't get that at all, will have to listen again to see if I can make it out. So many people will be feeling bad now - Ed, Emma, Jolene, Brian for making Will cancel his day off.

littlebillie · 23/02/2018 20:59

Just read this in the guardian

"In the UK alone, sepsis is responsible for 44,000 deaths every year, more than bowel, breast and prostate cancer combined. Despite this, a recent survey found that 44% of people in the UK have never heard of sepsis and have little idea that it is a life-threatening emergency."

RubyLennoxExists · 23/02/2018 21:00

Clutching at straws here, but is there any way that when the doctor said "she's gone" she just meant gone to ICU?
I don't want sad SLs like this Sad

Vango · 23/02/2018 21:00

Still Will is a product of all the awful things he experienced as Ed’s brother over the years. He wasn’t always bitter and angry. He was an excellent son, and watched the prodigal Ed let Clarrie and Eddie down over and over again. I always felt sad for him. Watching Ed get together with his wife and bring up his own son (after all the years of hostility) was awful for him.

RockNRollNerd · 23/02/2018 21:01

Hopefully this will give us some months of Eddie and Clarrie as decent people rather than the rude mechanicals with Eddie’s escapades for supposed comic relief. I like it when we see the good side of the characters - Eddie tonight being calm in the crisis and doing just what was needed, same as I loved the storylines where Lynda was a source of support to Vicky (I still remember her getting the same washing powder so when she did Vicky’s laundry the clothes smelled familiar to Bethany).

Agree that there was some really good acting tonight with Nic, Joe and Eddie but am still peeved at the clunky build up to it all - a bit like Nigel in the run up to SATTC when he got Elizabeth the brooch etc.

echt · 23/02/2018 21:02

Thinking back to the terrible doctor, I thought the acting was shocking at first, but now I see that flat voice is exactly the one the doctor used to tell me my DH would not recover. Maybe that's how they are trained, or train themselves to give bad news.

I'll listen again and re-assess. Over my coffee and sardines on toast brekkie.

Bea · 23/02/2018 21:11
Sad
NorthernLurker · 23/02/2018 21:12

Well that sucks. Mind oh it's been a while since young Ambridge children were deprived of a mother. Think the last case was poor Polly Perks (curse that milk tanker).

The public information point is a good one. How many threads on here start 'shall I go to a and e' and when you read on the op has a source of infection, feels like crap and doesn't want to waste NHS time? Most won't be serious but some are and the numpties who say 'stay at home' are risking lives. I work in a hospital. We're horribly busy all the time but it's the 37 year old previously healthy mothers we are there for, as well as the fifty year old with a heart attack and the ninety year old with pneumonia.

AgnesSkinner · 23/02/2018 21:15

I might be completely wrong of course. But Nic and Alice have half some drink related interaction lately - Nic only pretending to serve another drink to a quite pissed Alice at The Bull, stopping a drunk Alice from driving home and mentioning “problems”.

Was Alice at the Hunt Ball?

Vango · 23/02/2018 21:18

I’m beginning to wonder too if Nic knew that Alice was involved in the accident and felt bad that she hadn’t spoken up?

echt · 23/02/2018 21:21

Back again. Semi-crap acting from the doctor. Also, do doctor's really say "gone" when they mean died? Surely not.

While I dislike "passed away", at least it can't be mistaken for "gone" to ICU, for instance.

RubyLennoxExists · 23/02/2018 21:28

We're very close to the end too ... of this thread. Any title suggestions? And where's D3 when you need him?

PseudoBadger · 23/02/2018 21:30

“Alas poor Nic. I knew her, Kenton”

BikingBeatrix · 23/02/2018 21:30

That‘s a brilliant idea that Nic witnessed the accident. It would explain her more recent concern about Alice in the pub if she‘d seen Alice doing the hit n run. I can‘t imagine Will‘s response if she‘d tried to tell him what she saw. Oh ar! I wonder what Joe does with it now.

kungpopanda · 23/02/2018 21:32

@extinctspecies
Has anyone in the Archers died of cancer?
Not even fucking Ruth. More's the pity.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 23/02/2018 21:32

I've just caught up and I'm positive she told Joe that she'd killed someone and he told her not to be so silly!

BikingBeatrix · 23/02/2018 21:37

Matt isn’t dead though .....

Vango · 23/02/2018 21:39

I’ve just held the phone to my ear! Can’t make out a word. Mind you, where’s Andrew?

TeenTimesTwo · 23/02/2018 21:39

I forgot Matt didn't actually die! How could I have done that?

JessieMcJessie · 23/02/2018 21:39

OK, having her Mum is Spain was a reasonable bit of scriptwriting. I would have been really annoyed if they had just had her not make it in time from Darrington.

DadDadDad · 23/02/2018 21:40

Shocking stuff, and now nearly filled a thread.

Gosh, I can't believe the ground we've covered in this thread - discussed life expectancy (thinking it was Joe or Peggy who might die next Sad), invented Archer connections for our usernames, discussed Flanders and Swann, the conference. Tragedy and comedy all lives here.

Is anyone up to proposing a title for the next thread?

Timetogetup0630 · 23/02/2018 21:41

DadDadDad where are you ?
The sands of time are slipping through the hour glass of eternity and the thread is filling up fast !

PseudoBadger · 23/02/2018 21:41

Ahem! I have done up there Wink

DadDadDad · 23/02/2018 21:42

By the way, Ruby, it doesn't have to be me starting a thread, I'm not God PseudoBadger.

But no time to discuss, I think it's filling fast.
