Discuss The Archers here, the long-running thread series started by PseudoBadger. Maybe my puns will tempt her back to take the reigns?

I think Sleeping Beauty references can wait until the next thread which will probably cover much of December.

Lurkers de-lurk! New to The Archers? you're welcome here; the friendly crowd will answer your questions.

Justin will give Emma a discount/special offer on her house. Then she'll get accused of corruption.

Oooh. You're right. She needs to be careful there. That nonsensical surprise that Justin wasn't going to the meeting yesterday annoyed me.

Why would they want Pip to move back in when they've only two bedrooms between the three kids?

She's back at the cottage. Though they've set up the nanny-cam. Just to make sure she's ok.

extinctspecies · 02/12/2017 07:40

The Pip pregnancy makes me Very Cross because it's the 3rd unplanned pregnancy story we've had in a year, it's so sexist! As if all the youngish women in the village are so thick they all let themselves get upduffed, can't the editors think of anything else ???

BertrandRussell · 02/12/2017 08:03

Women are not allow to have sex without being punished for it in the Archers. They also seem not to have heard of contraception. TASWAMA.

C8H10N4O2 · 02/12/2017 08:51

Women are not allow to have sex without being punished for it in the Archers

I would modify that slightly. They are not allowed to enjoy sex or seek it. Helen being punished for being openly attracted to Rob and enjoying their early sex life for instance. Then of course Lilian who is not only sexually active but horrifically old (aka over 35).

The one exception possibly being Jolene but then she is a "bar maid" nudge nudge.

Cromwell1536 · 02/12/2017 09:57

Neil and Susan bounce around cheerfully though. Debbie sweeping out of The Bull to have a hot ONS with - Dr Richard? I agree about the lack of contraceptive know-how, which is surprising when you consider they're perpetually surrounded by breeding livestock.

Ah, wouldn't it be great if Ed's Good Ram came through, though? Everyone else seems to get windfalls (although Lillian seems determnined to give away all her assets) so, yeah, I hope they get prize lamb and it pays for the deposit on the house. And maybe a Brexit-induced housing price reduction will help them (although loss of subsidy and workers might not help farming sector in general).

I read the other day that agricultural output accounts for 1% of GDP. So why does it receive around 40% of subsidy?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/12/2017 10:18

They also seem not to have heard of contraception

Yes, this is an implausible story line.

Abra1d · 02/12/2017 10:44

Because the countryside is more than a means of food production; it is an important part of our cultural identity and history and provides ecological, recreational and tourist benefits. If farmers aren’t incentivized to look after it there’s a risk it degrades.

Though in my county, it seems any developer is welcome to put in plans to rip it up.

BertrandRussell · 02/12/2017 10:46

The only time contraception has been mentioned was when Phoebe had her wildly unlikely ONS with a picker. And that was really only to introduce the utterly hilarious pregnancy test confusion.....

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/12/2017 11:00

The implausible part in the Phoebe story wasn't that she might have a ons with the good looking picker but that she would not have contraception sorted out.

Me at Phoebe's age would have been perfectly likely to have a ONS with a good looking man, particularly one outwith my normal social circle, but I did everything possible to avoid any consequences. Like Phoebe I had far too much to lose.

campion · 02/12/2017 11:29

Pip has been sexually active for years so, presumably, was au fait with contraception. She took a risk? Heat of the moment? Whatever. It happens and probably explains why half of us are here Grin

Anyway, my money's on a quick abortion with no one knowing, except Elizabeth. It wasn't a coincidence that she was the one who Pip told, methinks.

Imbroglio · 02/12/2017 11:44

Didn't Phoebe get caught out because of the condom split or the picker was careless? She took the morning after pill which is also perfectly sensible.

extinctspecies · 02/12/2017 12:08

I wonder if the SW are thinking bigger picture / longer term.

Apparently, Pip is the Future of Brookfield. If she went down the traditional TA route then she would marry, take her DH's name and produce a few DC. The cast list is growing and growing and the SW need to contain it somehow (note how David's siblings aren't that fecund).
This way Pip/Brookfield/the programme will retain the Archer name and maybe only have one DC to lead the way forward into the next 60 years. Win/win.

StVincent · 02/12/2017 12:51

Won't they have to call it The Archer if that happens? Grin

Can't bloody believe all the young women of ambridge getting knocked up either. Was Emma's first baby unplanned too? Just need Lily and Nolly and we've got a clean sweep.

Was it Debbie or Lizzie who had an abortion donkeys years ago and it was thought a Big Deal?

C8H10N4O2 · 02/12/2017 12:58

Lizzie, when she was abandoned by the dastardly Cameron. To add to the drahma Shula wanted her to keep it to provide her with a baby to adopt and Jill opposed abortion (but was never quite sure if that was on account of Shula or in general)

AuldHeathen · 02/12/2017 13:00

I imagine the Ambridge humans assume they can get pregnant only when the vet calls round. Grin

And Susan and Neil ‚bouncing around‘ reminds me of Babette Cole‘s book which many families 2 decades or so ago used to explain sex to their offspring. Though l think our copy was perused more by the father than by the children.

AuldHeathen · 02/12/2017 13:10

Actually l‘m less sure Babette Cole‘s book was about bouncing. It might be a film fronm school that involved space hoppers. Despite having had sex at least 4 times, l never have understood why space hoppers were involved. Grin

R4 · 02/12/2017 13:24

arf.

Also, my prediction is that Justin and Lilian will do a Four Weddings. They will decide to stay together but NotMarry.

DadDadDad · 02/12/2017 13:35

That raises a question: when was the last wedding in Ambridge (that resulted in marriage, so Tom and Kirsty doesn't count)? I guess there's Adam and Ian, but who was before that?

OP posts:
Vango · 02/12/2017 13:42

Helen?

extinctspecies · 02/12/2017 13:54

Wont be long before Roy & Lexie tie the knot. If Lillian & Justin call it off. Even if they don't.

DadDadDad · 02/12/2017 13:54

Of course, her marriage ceremony was off-stage, wasn't it? Perhaps that's why I didn't think of it.

So, last successful marriage? Confused

Vango · 02/12/2017 13:55

Ed and Emma?

David and Ruth had an unplanned pregnancy which ended in miscarriage. Although pregnancy wasn't going to be a disaster for them.
