Steiner Schools?

Moomalicious · 23/10/2007 14:02

Does anyone have any experience with Steiner Waldorf kindergartens? My son is hating his preschool and I think this might be a better option for him but I'm an Atheist and am worried that may prejudice us.

The anthroposophical movement is the basis of the Waldorf School movement.? Rudolph Steiner

Just wanted to find the quote about blonde hair bestowing intelligence.

?You see, when we really study science and history, we must conclude that if people become increasingly strong, they will also become increasingly stupid. If the blonds and blue-eyed people die out, the human race will become increasingly dense if men do not arrive at a form of intelligence that is independent of blondness. Blond hair actually bestows intelligence.

?It is indeed true that the more the fair individuals die out the more will the instinctive wisdom of humans vanish.?

(Steiner, Rudolf: Health and Illness: Volume I: Nine Lectures to the Workmen at the Goetheanum.)

So people still maintain there's not an element of racism?

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 09:33

And here's another interesting take on the idea of liberation- and rebel said that it was right wing neo conservatives dissing anthroposophy.....

?[P]eoples and races are but steps leading to pure humanity. A race or a nation stands so much the higher, the more perfectly its members express the pure, ideal human type, the further they have worked their way from physical and perishable to the supersensible and imperishable. The evolution of man through the incarnations in ever higher national and racial forms is thus a process of liberation. Man must finally appear in harmonious perfection.?

(Steiner: Knowledge of Higher Worlds.)

Ok I'll try not to put any more large quotes- there are just SO MANY GEMS - and I've just learnt to paste and copy...

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 12:49

I just had to find this

-?Blond hair actually bestows intelligence. In the case of fair people, less nourishment is driven into the eyes and hair; it remains instead in the brain and endows it with intelligence. Brown- and dark-haired people drive the substances into their eyes and hair that the fair people retain in their brains.? [Rudolf Steiner, HEALTH AND ILLNESS, VOL. 1. Lectures from 1922 (Spring Valley, NY: Anthroposophic Press, 1981), pp. 85-86.]
why blondes are more intelligent according to Steiner

Blandmum · 08/12/2007 12:52

wow, what a load of racist wank!

and I type that as a natural blonde

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 13:15

Hi martian- I remember you from some other threads.
I've just learnt how to copy and paste- I thought somr of these steiner quotes would
be good fodder for some of us.
There are some great gnome ones too- but of course I don't want to over do it.

Blandmum · 08/12/2007 13:22

One should never over play one's gnome card

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 17:41

only just back on as we've had a hamster crisis- but it's all ok now...
you're so right about the gnomes martian

MerryAnnSinglemas · 08/12/2007 17:44

hijack here northernrefugee- guess who ?

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 18:52

Hi merryAnn ( !) mmm- nice name- where on earth does that come from- I think your last one sounded like a cute little dog- but you've obviously been reincarnated ...

Vulgar · 08/12/2007 19:19

northernrefugee39- please, please give us some gnome information.

I had a VERY strange encounter with some Steiner parents once and i admit to being totally fascinated but repelled by:

a) The assumed superiority over the rest of us mere mortals (I am from a mixed race family --maybe it was simple racism?)

b) How they totally believed in a set way of thinking. Totally dogmatic.

And utterly, utterly humourless.

It has only served to feed my fascination . . .

Vulgar · 08/12/2007 19:22

And Barking - I would LOVE to read your 'help i'm living in a steiner community' but I can't find it.

Am a crap Mumsnetter!

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 19:39

:Hi vulgar- hey- gnomes- you want gnomes I'll give you gnomes- there' loads more gems but I can't find them at the mo.

Hello Barking- I'd really like to read your thread about the Steiner community too...
Steiner science proclaims gnomes to be real:

they harvest the secrets of the universe from plants, according to a series of Rudolf Steiner lectures given in 1923
"The plant gathers the secrets of the universe, sinks them into the ground, and the gnomes take these secrets into themselves from what seeps down spiritually to them through the plants. And because the gnomes, particularly from autumn on and through the winter, in their wanderings through ore and rock bear with them what has filtered down to them through the plants, they become those beings within the earth which, as they wander, carry the ideas of the whole universe streaming throughout the earth. We look forth into the wide world. The world is built from universal spirit; it is an embodiment of universal ideas, of universal spirit. The gnomes receive through the plants, which to them are the same as rays of light are to us, the ideas of the universe, and within the earth carry them in full consciousness from metal to metal, from rock to rock." [4]

Vulgar · 08/12/2007 19:44

Do they look like those little plastic affairs you see in the local garden centre?

Oh, I do hope so.

but then probably not. I'm going a little TOO far now!

Barking- Oooh, I'm sorry, i hope you don't think I am laughing about your bad experience.

i will read your thread with relish . . .sad person that I am but I wish you all the best in your new move.

And the Chips anecdote really made me chuckle!

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 20:00

Awwh barking - I just read your old thread again- i think it's the right decision to move -but also feel INCENSED that you've been driven to this by anthros. Will your dd still go to the same school? Or are you moving a long way?
Love the chips

Vulgar- look at barking's gnome link on page 2 of this thread.... that's how I think they look.....

barking · 08/12/2007 20:00

my dh wants to buy some naff plastic ones and place them strategically staring at certain neighbours. Northernrefugee39 - did you have the 'I saw a dusty little gnome' song at your school? we use to have to sing it while clearing away. Oh God the madness! and the sing song voice! Did you ever find out why girls have to where trousers/leggings under dresses? And the hats?

The thing that would upset them the most though, is a big giant satellite dish, I have seen lots of them them at the recycling centre, I like the idea of putting them up on the neigbours houses in the middle of the night, then seeing the panic the next morning

MerryAnnSinglemas · 08/12/2007 20:05

northern (sorry to intrude again) - is my Christmas name -usually MaryAnnSingleton from Tales of the City...come and see me on Elevenses thread

barking · 08/12/2007 20:06

Oh just read my message and it looks like I'm asking why girls have to wear hats under their dresses
Maybe they do.............

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 20:10

Oh god- I wish you would do that! I'm laughing so much- - yep - we had that song- the kindy teacher used to sing everything tho' she'd sing things like" now Richard, let's not whack Jonas or pick your nose"- all singing- it was CRINGING but I'm really in hysterics as I remember it.

We didn't have so much of the trousers under dresses. My girls are pretty much tomboys- and didn't like dresses anyway- so that was a bit out of order for them in retrospect.

PLEEEASE do the gnome and dish thing-

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 20:13

Merry- I never did get gripped by Armestead Maupin like you did, did I?- He was quite good on desert Island disks tho'

barking · 08/12/2007 20:14

Northernrefugee39 - Not sure where we are going yet which is really tricky as I've always been rather focused before, dd is at a really good school but to try and live nearer would be impossible due to v high house prices. We may rent for a while and have a breather and we are also thinking about living in NZ which, if this came true I would be utterly grateful to all the steiner nutters as having gone through this, it has given us the courage to think of this as a possibility.

northernrefugee39 · 08/12/2007 20:14

Why do they do the singing anyway- does it help with re incarnation- is it more spiritual?

MerryAnnSinglemas · 08/12/2007 20:15

missed most of Desert Island Discs - quite a few Armistead M fans on MN - right, I shall leave your thread - it all sounds com pletely barking mad to me !
