Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

Wow, that's a big jump in cases.

I agree the uncertainty is the worst.

Imagine if someone (the PM, the Queen, world's most clever Dr, I don't know...) sat you down and said, okay, this is exactly what is going to happen over the next 6 months. And it was horrendous. It would still be more psychologically manageable than the unknown. You'd take a deep breath, think right, okay. And lean into the wind. It would be shit, but the inner resolve and relative calmness would help.

Uncertainty is so destabilising... it feels like drifting on a raft in the middle of the sea, you see other people on their lonely rafts but they are too far away and you are on your own. I think it's very hard to cope with prolonged uncertainty.
That's why it makes me feel sad when people are so sneery and mocking about so called panic buyers, and preppers as well. Yes people are frightened, and they are just trying to find a way through the fear and that is something which helps. We should be being extra compassionate towards those who are afraid. Perhaps even the sneering comes from a place of fear. Being kinder can't be a bad thing, especially as we plunge headlong into this.

Attached this picture from Wiki for reference. I’m just trying to analyse when can we expect this to peak.. pour in your thoughts too so it might help us preppers a little more

I read this yesterday, sorry I can't remember where, but it has stayed with me and seems to reflect the mood on this thread:

"In an epidemic outbreak, initial actions seem very extreme, but in retrospect, they seem not extreme enough."

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 14:45

@Albatross123 I think that quote is very apt.

Filitheyofun · 08/03/2020 14:46

I have never done this before but I was so worried in January hearing about Wuhan I honestly and still believe Chinese government lied about actual numbers but hey ho. We started getting food in over 2 weeks ago. Made me realise exactly how much food I have i tend to buy the same things 🙄. I've always got loads of loo roll and toothpaste and toiletries in (drove my dh mad) but now he is glad. My middle DD was hand sanitizer crazy always ordering off Amazon from States. Still pissed off that DDs friends dad went skiing knowing Northern Italy's situation hope he gets stuck out there! We have been shopping twice this weekend I dread to think how much we have spent on food and supplies this month 😟. I'm hoping that this mounts to nothing and I've been over reacting fingers crossed!

The will-writing MNer isMumblechum IIRC?

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 14:52

@Albatross That’s so true and strangely deep .. Somehow it reflects the mood perfectly. The uncertainty is scary but we can’t do anything about it can we.. other than keeping this thread very optimistic and upbeat.. if it brings a smile and a tiny ray of hope to someone reading this , that will be the best thing we have done for each other at this time of hour..

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 14:53

Oof at that jump

My thoughts on an Italian style reaction in the uk which I’ve already stated so not sure why people want to hear again but apparently I like the sound of my own typing

The areas of community transmission could be a quarantine target. Travellers infected could still be singularly quarantined

Maybe a few days ago, maybe now, I dunno, I’m making conversation, really

I agree on the uncertainty. I’d be interested in Italy vs uk growth overlaid

I’m pretty sure Italy were faster to react though

RageAgainst84 · 08/03/2020 14:57

Has anyone seen that the govt is saying they expect 100k deaths. That seems very low doesn’t it?

VenetoResident · 08/03/2020 15:01

Someone asked about case numbers in Italy. I think they initially quarantined on the Saturday night? 22nd? It ended today.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 15:04

That quote is a bit chilling

I always get the same food too, was worried about variety until I found these in Sainsbury yesterday. Everyone has prob already seen them, but long life guacamole?? Long life sour cream? Count me in!!

I was going to make my own guacamole and freeze it but I anticipate fucking it up really badly - I can’t even freeze chopped onion right

Bear in mind that the areas updates are 24 hours behind. So these are yesterdays.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 15:08

Yes....They are as of 9am this morning - still behind the afternoon numbers and lagging with actual reality as all the numbers are

BanKittenHeels · 08/03/2020 15:10

I’d be interested in Italy vs uk growth overlaid

Same, I would like to see this. I might see if I can do it this evening when the DC are less giddy.

BanKittenHeels · 08/03/2020 15:12

Yes I dispute those numbers because we are at a firm 3 in our borough and it says 0.

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 08/03/2020 15:14

One thing I have to suggest for the go bags for the hospital is dry shampoo. My hair is horrid after two days with no wash - our hot water is currently off so when I was browsing today in superdrug this looked perfect.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 15:21

That would be More technologically minded than me and that would also be fab, kitten

Good idea on dry shampoo - shame I can’t fit a personal lighting assistant in there too, that would Definitely do the job

LittleSwede · 08/03/2020 15:26

There are 13 in Hertfordshire! That's my county Shock

EileenBilton · 08/03/2020 15:33

I have a feeling this has been discussed before, so sorry for the repetition, but - how long do test results take to come through and get included in statistics? When are the new positives reported today likely to have been tested?

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 15:37

Elieen my friends test took 48 hours, I’ve heard of some taking 24, I guess they’d be in the days after’s 2pm figs but that’s a guess and might depend on differing systems in different local authorities

EileenBilton · 08/03/2020 15:41

Thanks Nato. I am trying to work out how "old" the picture of infection is as shown in the daily figures.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 16:04

Taking into incubation times in those infected, I hate to think!!

Neome · 08/03/2020 16:06

We need to ask, if anyone knows how to do freedom of information or similar, that the total number of individuals tested where results not yet obtained also be included. Like Thursday x number tested, Friday y number tested etc and each day outstanding number.

Badly put but you know what I’m getting at.

Also number of intensive care beds and high dependency beds currently occupied by patients with COVID19.

For those who have died length of time from infection to diagnosis and from hospitalisation to death.

We absolutely need and deserve some proper guidance for people at high risk of severe illness. Saying everyone at low risk needn’t worry is like telling a woman who’s brca2 positive not to worry about breast cancer because not many men get it (and those that do don’t want to be thought of as disposable either!).

Ok, rant over, love and peace to all 🙏🏽

AmelieTaylor · 08/03/2020 16:09

@NatoPMT. Can I suggest you trial run them before buying too many? I personally love guacamole, but I can stand that one or the jars. Now I know we’ll definitely lower our taste buds expectations, but I’d have to be very hungry. I find them all very ‘plasticky’. They’ve been around years so they must sell well enough, so plenty of people must like them 🤷🏻‍♀️
